Probably not many of you follow the magazine The Week, but they normally have a mildly amusing piece of cover art (I also think they are one of the better news magazines available in America.) Lately some of them have been downright fantastic, my favorite being the first one:

SombreroAgnew posted:http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/shortcuts/2012/dec/04/liberal-amsterdam-plans-scum-villages Quite a scary legal grey area, this "antisocial behavior" situation... Then again, I've witnessed people set up bonfires burning lawn furniture on sidewalks in residential neighborhoods more then once in Amsterdam. And my neighborhood keeps getting locked down with police blockades and helicopters because people keep robbing armored cars. The first time, it was three guys with a gun, and they caught the one with the gun. The next week it was two guys and they just had a can of gasoline and poured it all over the guard and stood over him with a lighter. And then a few days later something happened again but I didn't check the news. Plenty of asocial assholes around here yet I'm sure this could be resolved without creating concentration camps. What really flips my wig is that the supporters of this use "historical tradition" as a justification, (and completely ignoring the obvious historical instance of this) mention a 19th century version of this that ended in the creation of totally lawless parts of the country. But they say that won't happen this time because they'll put in 24-hour police surveillance because they've "learned from the mistakes of history"

They did defend their country from invasion, though...eventually. Just because the Nazis started as the aggressors doesn't mean that they didn't end up fighting a defensive war against an overwhelming foe. Trying to paint warfare as some simplistic "foreign invader = bad, domestic defender = good" misses a whole lot of important details. Just because your opponent is an rear end in a top hat doesn't mean that you're a swell guy.

Much like the police you can't generalize a socially vital profession broadly (but it should be recognized these jobs come with power that can be abused or perverted). But nope we still can't have any real catharsis Post-Vietnam for a number of reasons. You either love the troops and support them (and State Foreign Policy) without question, or you have decided that every individual part of the MIC is a remorseless monster. Who is good and who is evil? Why not discard these labels entirely?
