Seriously though, he does like the entire Credo fight in one SSS combo where he takes one hit. Beautiful.

I still enjoy watching DMC combo videos from time to time, and the furthest I've gotten to being a monster at these games like breatoal and company was figuring out that Just Releases and Blocks are more consistent when done in the air and managing to S-rank every mission in DMC4 at all difficulties. I haven't even completed the Bloody Palace legitimately yet, I just use it as a playground.

I'm willing to bet that these videos are way beyond how most people get though. It's a subset of hardcore fans even deeper than people who play for money in Quake or Starcraft, mainly because they don't even get paid for it. I can see why a casual player wouldn't see the difference between the old and new, except for maybe controls; but when you go real deep into the game, that's when you see that it's not the DMC you knew, for better or worse.

brea's DmC video was a real mixed bag for me on that note. Charge shot cancelling is pretty cool, and she actually managed to pull off some cool-looking combos like the air juggle one with two charge shots, but you can see that some moves (especially the Osiris' attacks) take way too long to actually use effectively in an Enemy Step air combo. In fact, Enemy Step juggles enemies now, but most of the video is her fooling around with animation cancels instead of styling on enemies with the buffed mechanic.

vvv: There's talk of a PC port, but I imagine it hinges on the game doing good sales-wise. I get the feeling that the demo's reception was pretty lukewarm though, and who knows if they can tweak the game in the amount of time they have left.

I'm not nearly that good, but I definitely look back and think, "wow, I used to SUCK at DMC."

I remember Dmc3 kicking my rear end SO, SO HARD when it first came out. I did the Agni and Rudra fight like literally 30 times in a row. (Having to replay the whole level each time, since this wasn't special edition with happy yellow orbs for everyone)

I dunno where it happened, but somewhere along the way...

I can beat every boss in DMC3 now in one try, with nothing more than Ebony, Ivory, and Rebellion. Its easy too, rote. I guess a BIG part of that is just learning the boss attacks and patterns by heart, but... yeah. I used to struggle SO much, and now I can combo between two weapons like its second nature. *shrug*

Man, I really want to like the new DmC, I've long been a huge fan of the series. I was burned hard by Dmc 2 though, so I'm gonna be wary of this one.

I don't like the new art design AT ALL, I'm worried about the change in team, and there's no PC port?

Blagh, I'll just play the DMC HD collection instead. 1, 3, and 4 are amazing games.

"My name is Dante."
"Fuck you say?"

As has been stated before, Dante in DMC4 is crazy flexible and open-ended for combos. Much as I like that though, I can't begin to approach anything vaguely resembling that level of skill. It's just so much and I get overwhelmed. I'm a lot better than I used to be, though; but I do kind of prefer building combos with Nero. I hadn't played DMC4 in about a year until the other day though, but I started an LDK run and S ranked the first two missions; I'm wondering if I should enable Turbo mode to maybe increase my input/response time.

Also, NT has decided the next step in their advertising campaign is some AR game. The EYE of Dante, because nothing fits so well with the "punk" theme NT claims to aim for than people holding up their iPads like cameras to earn "in-game orbs."

If it makes you feel any better (it won't), the combat is being supervised and assisted by the DMC2/3/4 team. Of course the majority of it is NT, using Heavenly Sword as a base so...

A PC port/demo is coming shortly after the console versions, if the press release is accurate. It's being done by some Polish developer that apparently specialises in ports. And that'll be at 60fps and all that jazz.

As for all the Truestyle players, it's amazing watching them do all this crazy stuff on reflex, cutting through wave after wave of enemies. :allears:
It's harder to do in DMC3, obviously because they can't flick through styles, but there's still some impressive combos and weapon switching out there.

See this right here is the problem with the new DMC game. Look how long he has to do well to get to SSS. Sure the path to S is short and quick and he can maintain SS in the start but he really has to bust his rear end to get to and then maintain that SSS rank.

The primary focal point of the DMC combat system was aggression and variety. The style mechanics rewarded you for being aggressive and all-in, discouraging 'safe' defensive play and rewarding you for staying in on enemies even when they are attacking/being aggressive themselves. Likewise, your score would not allow you to use only a small subset of moves so you not only had to stay in AND switch up what you were doing. It was a game that encouraged basically being crazy balls-in as often as possible. There were a lot of little things you could do to basically be aggressive in the way you chose. A lot of action games encourage a "turtling" sort of gameplay where you stay back, wait until the enemy is vulnerable, do a simple combo and repeat. Even if it offers an aggressive option (the parry mechanic in God of War or Lords of Shadow for example) it's still a fairly defensive-minded game. DMC (and Bayonetta) are extremely aggressive games with your special mechanics designed to encourage and reward going full-in even though it is dangerous.

That is the primary problem with the new system. The Style mechanics does reward variety (to a degree), but not aggression. Likewise, the variety we're shown in the demo is dire. In DMC1, 3 and 4, new weapons represent a completely different playstyle. Here the axe is literally "heavy attack" and the scythe is only slightly better. Maybe upgraded they'll show more variety but the demo gives a poor showing. So the variety you're encouraged to do basically amounts to "do an air combo" and "hold a button and do a slightly different combo" instead of a different playstyle. Again, this could be a bad demo, but the implication is worrying. Not to mention that it appears that style counts damage dealt more than variety, discouraging lengther-but-weaker combos in favor of just whatever deals the most damage. This goes hand-in-hand with the removal of taunt, which reduces the emphasis on style (The DMC system's defining characteristic) and increases the emphasis on pure damage dealing.

The boss battle suffers from the same discouragement of aggression. There's no reason to take risks. You easily SSS rank the boss by hanging back (forcing the boss into one of two attacks, only one of which is remotely threatening) and parrying attacks. You don't even have to watch your footing because falling off the cliff doesn't reduce your style meter. There's no reason to go balls-in and put yourself at risk for greater reward. Play defensively and safely and the SSS rank is yours.

I preferred DMC1 so I took something completely different away from how the combat system worked.

Foreword: I apologize for butchering the word tempo also for writing so many bad words about DMC1

Basically the entire game is based on tempo and who holds the tempo and how you as the player manages to get said tempo (the ability to do sick combos) and don't lose it (namely by getting hurt). It's like a puzzle game crossed with a tug of war crossed with what it's actually seen as (an action beat 'em up)

The game starts with enemies who just give you the tempo on a silver platter, Marionettes are slow, clumsy, can be staggered by looking at them funny, and have easily telegraphed moves. They're quite simply target dummies that have the possibility to be dangerous enough that they're fun to style on, as opposed to just something dull and boring.

Later enemies take said tempo away from you by doing things like turning invincible, floating through walls, becoming immune to weaponry and so on and so forth, however, all of the enemies have clear weak points and rules that can either be followed or completely circumvented in order to reclaim the tempo and beat them to death (best examples are critical hits on Sin Scissors and Shadows' Spear rapid gunfire).

The coolest bit about all of this is how the game's File lets you know when you inadvertently did something cool and then can start to repeat it and have fun learning ways to style on enemies that should be really hard, and the fact that another game like this doesn't have the enemy design to sustain a constantly updating file on enemy habits, gimmicks and weakpoints is a tragedy.

The ultimate example of this is something like Nightmare, a boss with slow, absurdly powerful attacks, during which the boss' core is revealed. However, there's three ways to deal with them, each of which result in a different level of risk and reward and a difference in how the tempo is allocated. I'll use the example of an attack where Nightmare detaches a part of himself and sends it spinning around the field, for around 10 seconds, albeit in a predicatable pattern.

1) Get hit by it, you take absolutely massive damage and Nightmare takes none, the attack continues until it ends, meaning you could get hit again and again. (No risk, no reward)
2) Dodge the attack, you take zero or very low damage but Nightmare only takes minimal damage because the core retracts quickly after the spinning blade retracts. (Low risk, low reward)
3) Directly counter the attack by hitting the blade and sending it back into Nightmare early, you feel like a complete badass and Nightmare is so in awe of you he just sits there depressed and lets you just wail on him so hard you get a stylish combo, however, failing to directly counter an attack can lead back to number 1. (High risk, high reward)

What makes it really interesting is how the counters to these attacks work, some involve directly hitting the part of the boss that is trying to hurt you with really good timing, something that's so comically dangerous it's a wonder it works. Others involve getting into a decent position, using specific weapons and so on and so forth. However, the game is deep enough that there are multiple solutions to deal with the same problem.

PS I can't fit Nobodies into this thing at all so I hate them also they're unfun to fight but I guess it's like a little kid taking said tempo kicking you in the shins and then running away.

Quite simply what I'm saying is the game starts off as an agressive game and then turns into something more reactionary and defensive but only so you can take advantage of things and turn aggressive once again once you've rendered the enemy vulnerable. Basically Dante turns into a giant mousetrap.

I don't disagree, but even there it's aggression-oriented. As you pointed out, you can't really do well if you just go for low-risk/low-reward sort of attacks. The game encourages you to get in there. Not stupidly, not mindlessly, but playing it safe is a losing tactic. I mean you can TECHNICALLY win by being safe and cautious but it isn't anything really enjoyable. The "puzzles" are solved with risk. There's not a lot in the game which rewards you for nonaggression.

That isn't to say aggression is the only way to play. In comparison, something like Ninja Gaiden is absurdly defense-oriented. It focuses primarily on finding that one brief moment to attack and discourages aggression. It's fun because finding that hole or creating that hole is an interesting challenge. You have to keep track of all of the environment to make sure that you're not engaging in aggression when it's going to get you killed. You really have to commit.

(This also, in a related note, is why Ninja Gaiden 3 sucks. It forgoes anything defensive in favor of a bland aggressive gameplay with very little risk/reward and very little commitment.)

While the combat isn't quite as fast as later games, it really benefits from the impact a weapon has, such as the grunt Dante makes when he does a high riser, or the rumble in the controller as you let off a fully-charged Ifrit attack. In DmC, every attack makes Dante feel like he's wielding a Styrofoam sword, and and DMC3 the enemies barely flinch to your attacks.

Yeah. Alastor really had serious heft to it.
I think the slower combat is a bit of a relic from the original vision, a fantasy survival horror not very unlike the first three Resi games.

The lack of variety available to the player compared to 3 allowed them to make the enemies interesting. But I still believe that 3 is a lot more fun while DMC1 is the better game, at least in terms of design.

I miss this feature so much. I specifically remember spending many, many hours with every enemies just trying to fill out the File page by baiting them into moves and experimenting with them. It's amazing how much DMC1 got right for not only being the first in the series, but practically creating its own genre. DmC, with the benefit of not only the series' own innovations, but those of all the other action games made in the last decade, barely comes close to being as polished.

It's a shame about things like the underwater section, though. DMC games can easily stand up just on its combat, so all the gimmicks and minigames in Nero's levels were completely unnecessary.

That's really the most disappointing thing about DmC - the just seem to be pushing aside all the innovation, and tight, taut combat the series had become, and, starting from scratch, almost. Like just pretending that the genre innovations hadn't happened. I mean, it's not like the one they've devised is unplayable, it's just really loose, and nowhere near as refined.

You gotta wonder what they were thinking with those dice rooms in 4, and then the penultimate level with those dice steps and a boss rush (I've never been a fan of endgame boss rushes, it's just padding). Dante had the best idea.

The worst part about the space harrier section was that one of the best boss fights in the game is after it but I can't be bothered to play through the tedious shooter section to get to it.

Yeah, that level is my least favorite entirely because of that. I'd replay it a billion times if not for Space Harrier.

Have you figured it out yet?

You gotta wonder what they were thinking with those dice rooms in 4, and then the penultimate level with those dice steps and a boss rush (I've never been a fan of endgame boss rushes, it's just padding). Dante had the best idea.

This bit isn't so bad if you know the trick; Nero's a bit of a cheater, you see. If you use any of the Buster moves (grabbing or uppercutting), the die will automatically land on whatever side was face-up. Since the die always rotates through all six numbers in the same order, it was easy to cheese those sections. Even before I knew that, I enjoyed the second iteration of the dice minigame because it gave me a chance to reacquaint myself with Nero for the final boss, after dicking around (and dying, a whole, whole lot) with Dante.

Of course, as you say, Dante's version of "The winning move is not to play" is far superior. As is literally everything Dante does in comparison to Nero. :allears:

Had to finish watching the whole thing. In light of DmC that final cutscene cuts loving deep man.

Dante's allowance - $100
To think we might never see this Dante again. I'm seriously all bummed out, now.

WHAT THE gently caress HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH DMC!? What kind of PR is this? Why do they think people interested in playing a urban fantasy, hack and slash, are going to be interested in this knock-off Anonymous/"We are the 99%" bullshit. What!? What is this garbage? The Not-Fox one was bad enough, christ! What is wrong with the PR people for this game? :psyduck:

Is it really so hard to market an action game?

I own all of the old DMCs and I have absolutely zero faith in the new one but I don't see what's wrong with a little world-building, even if the world-building is trite as all hell. DmC's schtick seems to be that demonic influences are ruining the economy and the world so those advertisements don't seem too out there at the very least.

...I don't know, I'm just trying to find something positive about this. After this and the new SimCity, it feels like every franchise I like is going up in smoke. :negative:

We've already seen combo videos where people annihilate bosses without getting touched and dodge fullscreen explosions, but there are ways of making it even more ridiculous:

The dude made another video (round 3 in the annotations) with even more impressive combos and blocks, but it's using a graphics mod so feel free to check it out if you're cool with that.

vvv: Yeah, but Shadow Credo looks lame with wings and a shield that don't match. It's all personal taste anyway.

In terms of graphics mods, I'd say Green Coat Dante is pretty inoffensive.

I think it's just my reaction to the whole, whatever it is they're trying to do with the whole social media revolution thing (not that it has any real bearing on the game, mind), and it's just baffling to me, why it's the route they chose to go down to advertise an action game.

Like I know they're going for a "They Live" vibe, I just feel that it's a bit...well perhaps I just don't get it :(
I am enjoying the irony though of what amounts to "gently caress advertisers and corperations! Obey our ads and buy our poo poo to fight back!". And that NT took a joke from Futurama (which managed to be more subtle than what DmC has been), and then tried to turn it into "serious social commentary".

If I didn't know any better, I'd've thought that the whole game (and its publicity) was just an exercise in farce - like, no-one could do this poo poo with a straight face. It has to be a joke, right? Right? :smith:

Also, there's a new SimCity?

Look on the brightside, at least he ends the way we met him - shooting stuff on a fiery background, and saying "Let's rock!". Even if they don't make another normal DMC (though it's too early to tell), it's a nice send off.
