 Pacific Rim is an upcoming film by Legendary Pictures, directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth). The story is that swarms of giant monsters (called Kaiju, the classic Japanese term) have started rising from deep in the ocean, reaking havoc across the globe resulting in the death of millions of lives. To combat the Kaiju, humanity develops a new kind of weapon: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even as the Jaegers prove nearly defenseless in the face of the onslaught, mankind is forced to turn to a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam), and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) to pilot an obsolete Jaeger and turn the tide. Basically, the film is Guillermo del Toro's big homage to Japanese Kaiju films, Japanese mecha anime/tokusatsu shows, and general science fiction mecha nerdery. The AI of the mecha is voiced by Ellen McLain, the voice of the Portal game series' GlaDOS, complete with the same voice filter. I think this is the first Hollywood film in some time that has an Asian (co)protagonist that wasn't a kung-fu film? The budget is pretty sizable ($200 mil), the action / special effects look good thus far, and it is confirmed that there will be rocket punches. This is one of the movies Del Toro was born to make. The monsters and robots look fantastic so far - there's a lot of Mignola influence in there - and the scale feels massive. Thank god someone with some vision is tackling this crazy beast and not a bland fuckwad like Micheal Bay. Another one of the inspirations for the film was Goya's The Colossus. It's not hard to see the correlation, really. The sense of scale and size is definitely there. Has del Toro said specifically what films / works specifically inspired him to pay them homage with the film? I haven't seen anything yet. e: Also why does every trailer feel the need to have the BAWOOOO sound effect now.

I dig the neat dehumanisation thing they have going on with the robots. Like in the voiceover they talk about making monsters of their own, there's a kind of paradox at work here, where a humanoid machine is less 'human' than something like a tank or a plane because it engages with the monsters on their own level, through direct physical force. It seems like to effectively fight monsters they have to dehumanize themselves(perhaps because mere humans can't effectively comprehend the monsters ala cloverfield).

I haven't seen any specific inspirations mentioned, although Evangelion seems pretty obvious. And Mignola, creator of the Hellboy and BPRD comics, is all over the monster and robot design. Del Toro's a giant fanboy - Mimic was an attempt to ape his graphic style onscreen - and the idea of giant otherworldly monsters sent to destroy earth, and the somewhat blocky, retro look of the Jaegers, is straight Mignola.

The monsters in the trailer gave me a kind of Cloverfield vibe. I remember reading an interview with the creators behind Cloverfield that said the monster was basically a baby who was frightened and panicking. Could be a fun little tie-in if this movie existed in the same universe and these are what the adult Cloverfield monsters grow up to be.

Every Del Toro film may have/be about monters, but he's such a great director outside of just the high concept fantasy elements that all his films tend to be great on a character level. Obviously Pan's Labyrinth is amazing, but even Hellboy is really solid and had great characterization so I have 100% faith in him.

Yeah, super stoked for this movie. Wasn't Del Toro the guy rumored to be making a Metroid movie a while back? The visor on the "main" Jaeger(great catch-all name for the robots) reminds me a bit of it for some reason. Probably the tint and little hexagonal patterns in it.

I'm actually a tiny bit disappointed that this doesn't look more like the "Guillermo del Toro's Evangelion" I originally heard it described as, with the emphasis on human insecurity and neurosis vs. standing strong and unified against an external threat. On the other hand, it still looks awesome, and trailers can be misleading.

I first heard about this movie from my brother, he said it was going to be just like a live action mecha anime. Based off a glance from a early photo of the movie, I thought the ex-pilot was going to be played by Bruce Willis and its going to be just like Evangelion but subsitute Shinji for Korbin Dallas from the fifth element. I realize now that looking at the photo, the ex-pilot guy has hair so it can't be Bruce but this movie might be cool to see when it comes out.

I've been hearing a lot of stuff about how this is clearly Evangelion The Movie!!!!! but it reminds me a lot more of Big O, at least the way the robots and monsters move and the fights seem to be playing out. Big Slow Earthshattering punches and stuff like that. Which is great because Big O is the best thing.

The robot/creature designs look great. I was worried the mechs would be a jumbled mass of metal spikes like Transformers and the monsters would be Cloverfield-esque nondescript beige blobs. It's exciting to see this concept done with a great director and an actual budget.

The trailer looks alright. I like the mech designs a lot more than I thought I would after the main Jaeger was first revealed, but at the same time all of the shots of them actually piloting it struck me as being goofy as hell. It looks like they're in some kind of ridiculous exercise machine.

If it's an consolation, the ex-pilot guy is played by the President of SAMCRO on "Sons of Anarchy". Or the doofus rebel who keeps getting door checked by Clive Owen in Children of Men.

I guess I'll be the sperg who hates the GLaDOS voice inclusion. I'm looking forward to the movie, and the trailer was awesome, but there's no way that I won't immediately think of Portal when hearing the robot AI talk. I'm not even a huge fan of the games, but just having played them means I'll be distracted every time that voice is featured, which hopefully isn't throughout the whole movie. I understand it was supposed to be an homage to something Del Toro loves, but c'mon. It's like putting C3PO's voice in the new Transformers because Michael Bay loves Star Wars.
