canned_fruit posted:Similarly is it not advisable to use an external hard drive in the same way as an internal drive? Should I not be installing applications on it? Any music people know if installing VSTs on an SSD is actually worth it as opposed to a HDD? (This is where a lot of space will be taken up) You can move most applications to an external, though if they have an installer you may need to move them after installing to the OS drive. Just move the .app and don't screw with anything else. The .app is usually a huge majority of the data installed anyway. Plugins install to either /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins or ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins if you want to move them and use a DAW that lets you pick a folder for plugins. If you use Logic or another DAW that doesn't let you choose, you may be able to store them on another drive and put an alias or symlink in the "Plug-Ins" folder to point to that folder (I haven't tried it). Moving plugins to an HD from an SSD would likely only make them initialize faster. Once they are in memory it shouldn't make a difference. quote:Also does anyone know how loud each computer is in relation to each other? I'm only doing amateur recording and don't have any baffling or sound isolation from the computer. It shouldn't be an issue unless you are using fig-8 or omnidirectional mics. I'm getting a new Macbook soon. How much difference would I notice between this one: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1405914 and this one: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1405924 ? I cant make much sense of the stats here but its about a 300 dollar difference.

Those arent even specs it just says one cpu is better than the other. You would notice no difference between the cpu.

Just migrated everything over the my new 27" iMac. Popping in 32Gb of ram was dead simple. Migration assistant continues to impress, even though I had to install some software so that my 3Tb Seagate drive was useable in its new Thunderbolt dock. It runs nearly silently and is quite cool compared to the 2008 iMac it replaces. No apparent impact from the Fusion drive yet, but I just moved over a heck of a lot of data and I'm sure it will take time to cache my The screen is quite nice, no glare to speak of but quite a lot cooler than the old 24". Perhaps it will get warmer over time as some older models did. This thing really makes me want to keep a clean, minimalist desk. It is amazing that even from the front you can sense how thin it is. I have yet to do anything to tax the processor and graphics card (I went top configurable spec for both), but I am happy to answer any questions...

Interestingly the bump from 2.3 to 2.6GHz has about the same difference in score as the maxed mini to maxed iMac, so for $100 I think I'll definitely do that after all. Granted, I'm not too sure how Geekbench works and I'm pretty sure it doesn't take GPU into account. Anyway yeah Geekbench is all CPU, well that and memory bandwidth since that feeds the CPU. Whether it's worth for you it is something for audio goons to help answer, search around for others using Mac minis and your apps, might be specific forums, or audio threads around here that might be better to ask in (...since specific forums tend to attract the crazies). Most CPUs these days are basically just fast or faster. Looking at the Intel CPU pages, the 2.6ghz one might be a bit faster GPU wise, the max clock is 1.25 vs 1.2 ghz...but the base clock for both is 650mhz so I'm not sure how much that actually plays out in practice, if it's even noticeable. quote:I think I will go for an external hard drive over installing one myself, that one you listed japtor looks pretty good, although I'm not sure if Thunderbolt would have any benefit over USB 3.0. From what I read it should be limited by the drive speed rather than transfer speed (for mechanical drives at least). A while back somebody in here said something about using an SD card to give him/herself a little more wiggle room on a laptop with an SSD. I've never purchased one before, so I was wondering if this is a legitimate way to go about expanding one's available memory? It doesn't seem like you could put anything but documents or some music on them. That's no problem if it's the case. How reliable are these things? Is there a particular brand I should stay away from? I was thinking about getting a 64GB for around fifty bucks. Is that the sweet spot as far as price versus value these days? I just got my 15" MBP and the thing is pretty rad. I'm glad I pulled the trigger and have an opportunity to get away from my old 11" Air. Thanks for the help in sussing out what's appropriate for my computer usage, people.

Sandisk is a good brand for SD cards. Buy the highest class you can afford.. in my experience, the actual witnessed write speeds are about no better than 1/2 the claimed speed of the card. Read speed get much closer to the advertised speed.

Loading things repeatedly does seem to speed up performance, but pretty much everything is super fast regardless. Here are a few pics with everything set up. Yes, I have a lot of things wired. From the front it looks clean but it is a mess in the rear. WFT, two mice and a mess of headphones. I couldn't find an SD Card to fill the slot, and I have thunderbolt stuff daisy-chained so I have an ugly open port there, too. Maybe if I get an Apple display I can use that connection. It looks thin even from the front, but from the top its amazing.

Sometimes when I'm watching Netflix on my Macbook Air in clam shell mode it starts dropping frames like crazy after a while. Any ideas why? Is there a way to know if it's because it's too hot and it's limiting the processor? Am I at risk of damaging it?

There's a hardware sensor cutoff so it's nearly impossible to damage your machine that way. Are you running the latest revision of the OS with all updates applied? If anything it's probably lovely Intel graphics drivers, which they still need 3-4 revisions to get right even on the Windows side. I watch NetFlix all day long sometimes on an old nVidia 9400M MacBook in clamshell mode and nothing melts. Could also be the Mac version of Silverfast making GBS threads the bed too, but see above.

Is there any utils out there to test the sanity of the AMD graphics on an MBP? It seems whenever the computer switches to AMD , the screen starts getting super glitchy in a manner that looks like, well it looks like its just hosed in the head and broken. With gfxCardStatus I can see it only happens when its in AMD mode, and if forced into intel mode it stops. But I dont know if its a hardware or software issue.
