People here, especially on the west coast, tend to get more high pitched as they get more irate. They also speak at 100 miles per hour.

Sarcophallus posted:A child is snatched up by a Golden Eagle: This sounds like the beginning of some ancient Greek or Roman's biography: "At age 2, Heliogabalus was nearly snatched away by a golden eagle. His elderly caretaker managed to rescue him in the nick of time, though he was left with lasting scars on his forehead and scalp. He later credited his bravery and bloodthirstiness in battle to this moment, when the 'pitiless touch of Jove's bird of prey' passed on to him its most defining qualities."

I wonder why this is so much more unsettling than a video of, for example, a bear or a big cat attacking a child. Is it just because we don't expect a bird of all things to have the gall to swoop down and take our kids?

I'm not seeing where the video could be faked, I checked time and time again and this video and description has not convinced me that this thing was faked. a big and rare coincidence, but not outside the realm of possibility. Also the Jpeg could have just been an encoding error with the video camera quality. Maybe it is faked, I'm just saying that the claims of it being faked arent strong enough. It's fake, because I'm an internet expert on how eagles should look when they swoop in and take toddlers.

Speaking as a 3D compositor it could've easily be faked, and it's much easier to make something look photoreal when your live footage is that crappy/shaky (there are filters and motions blurs to match any lens). Also the kid moves slightly up a frame or two after the eagle lets go, which is odd when the kid barely has any momentum and should fall back down like a rock. And add to that the classic "point the camera at the grass while running over for the close-up!". Not saying it couldn't be real but it seems very unlikely.

But who would be willing to invest the money into that and why? That sort of compositing isn't cheap. Or at least, paying a freelancer who actually knows his poo poo on CG compositing isn't.

Must admit that the upward "glitch" makes it look faked but it could be that the eagles claws had not fully disengaged or only one had. The kid also moves forward and even puts out his arms and turns to break his fall after being let go. Also reacts to the eagle incoming, he ducks slightly just before the eagle hits him.

Has there been any recorded cases of eagles actually doing or attempting something like that? I'd rather consider the evidence, instead of baselessly calling it fake. Gotta admit though, the close ups of the 'effects' shot don't look entirely convincing.

Eagles are basically dumpster-chicken, in that they'll gladly scavenge food if it's available. Search youtube for "eagle vs <whatever>" for examples of eagles dragging goats off cliffs, attacking bears, being used to hunt wolves, whatever. I come from AK where we have tons of bald eagles, and they LOVE to come down and take fish scraps from cleaning stations, they're not shy about it at all.Wikipedia on Golden Eagles posted:Nearly 200 species of mammal and bird have been recorded as golden eagle prey. So an eagle deciding to try to make off with an unattended baby isn't that outrageous. On the other hand, the wing beating of the bird is hugely fake-looking after it grabs the kid. When a raptor like that is under load and trying to take off, they move their wings a TON. Hard, long, deep beats. In that video, the wings are just way too casual. More likely, if an eagle were going to eat a baby, it'd land on the kid and attempt to eat it right there. Bad Munki fucked around with this message at 16:41 on Dec 19, 2012 |
