Every year it's the same poo poo. You hear the albums you hear, you don't hear the albums you don't, but then the next year comes. Are you like me? Do you end up starting fresh every year and never really getting to a lot of the music you meant to check out? I do it every year.

This year I decided to address it. I've listened to everything I thought looked interesting. I'm blasting through my 2012 backlog now. Anything I missed the first time around - OFF!, TNGHT, Ty Segall, Deerhoof, Crystal Castles. It's all here, it's all getting heard. Winamp tells me I have 23 hours of unheard music from this year, so I'll make it easily.

Anyway this long and rambling post is really just a cover to tell you all something.

Man, this Chairlift LP is loving bomb as poo poo. This is my jam. Soooo good.

Yeah, this is getting some serious play from me too. I just love that poppy sound, it's kind of Vampire Weekend-esque.

edit: No wait, I'm thinking of Hospitality. Chairlift is good too, but Hospitality is just awesome.

There are quite a few of Grimes and St. Vincent, some Kaki King and a couple of Crystal Castles, a couple of Karin Dreijer of Fever Ray/The Knife, one of The Weeknd and the Thursday girl, one of Faith Coloccia of Mamiffer, a couple of Nadja, and one of Massive Attack.

The new Foxygen album, entitled We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic. You know it's gotta be great just from the title. Given how much I loved their debut EP last year, this was easily my most eagerly anticipated album in a long time.

It definitely lives up to the praise I gave it. They took their amazing modern-retro sound and refined it. I did have some problems with their first album in that it was a bit disorganized, but this album fixes all those problems. It retains the strong 60s influences with a modern twist, and loving rocks in doing so!

Here's some videos of songs to check out to get a taste of their sound:

I've been listening to it almost non-stop for the past couple of days, it just gets better with every listen. I'm a hug fan! Second album is more laid back, slower style. Alexander hops on the Jesus train a little too much for me, but there are some great songs like "Man on Fire", "Mayla", "Child", and "All Wash Out." Give it a spin on Spotify at least. They said they have another one coming out this year I think.

Try to see them live if you haven't. Solid show with good vibes.

I actually worked as a production assistant at one of their shows in 2010. Great experience, they're such chill people. I have a lot of great memories from that show; it was an outdoor show in the summer and there was such a huge amount of positive energy that night. I remember watching the encore from on top of our production trailer next to the stage and Alex got almost the whole crowd to sit Indian style with him in the middle of them and sing along to one of their songs. I almost tripped into one of the Olsen twins walking around backstage that night.

I also got my favorite "I met someone famous" stories from then. After the show a coworker and I ran into Alex back stage and my coworker was like "Hey man congrats, great show" and Alex kinda didn't react so my friend kept walking. As I was passing him, Alex grabbed me and said "Man I hope he's not mad at me, I didn't mean to blow him off, I'm just really really high right now, please tell him I'm sorry." I thought that was just the funniest thing, and that it was super sweet that he was so worried that my co-worker was mad at him.

Up From Below has some great songs, but overall I don't think it's a very strong album. I never listen to more than one song from it in a row. I think Here is a stronger album overall, but there isn't anything as good as 40 Day Dream on it. I listen to them probably once a week though, I think they've made some drat good music.

If you liked their first album this is more of the same. Lots of catchy throwback pop/rock filled with big riffs, fist-pumping hooks, "woah-oh" choruses, and, of course, cowbell. I also highly recommend catching them live if you ever get the chance. I saw them three times while I was at Iowa and they were some of the most fun shows I've ever been to.

Compared to their first album, it seems there is more variety to their sound here. And even more of the fantastic rock sound they had on the first album. It's really good.

Also, if they have a show near you, make sure you go, they are absolutely killer live.

Thanks for the link! Listened to the album twice and I agree it's good. Early standouts for me are Silent Treatment, Maw Maw Song and Leopard and the Lung.

I really want to see this band live! I had to skip them last time they were nearby as it was a weekday show during my busy season at work. They were opening for A Place to Bury Strangers, another band I want to see live, at one of my favorite venues so I was pretty sad that I had to pass on that show.

Yeah the Strokes have never been afraid to move into new territory. Look at the transitions between Room on Fire and First Impressions of Earth, and from that to Angles. Unfortunately, changing their sound hasn't really worked out for them all that well. This sound is atrocious.

You know, if you chop off the first 50 seconds of that song and then cut it off at the 2 50 mark its actually pretty good.

As a whole though it is garbage.

That album for me is basically, skip, under cover of darkness, skip, skip, taken for a fool, then a bunch more skipping. Which is sad because I can listen to first impressions pretty much straight through without that ever crossing my mind.

I've been enjoying the On An On album as well. Before releasing this album, the three members, including the lead singer (Nate Eiesland), were in another band called Scattered Trees. I haven't listened to their whole discography, but their last album Sympathy was very good, albeit much more toned down in production and simplified in song structure (not as much emphasis on atmosphere/ambience, etc.) than On An On's is. It was written after the death of the Eiesland's father, and it's one of the more affecting albums I've listened to in recent memory. Worth checking out, I think, if you like On An On.
