I haven't watched this yet, but the production led me to PBS.org, where there are a ton more "Secrets of the Dead" documentaries to watch. I just spent the last hour watching one about how East Germany doped up their women's Olympic team with testosterone during the 80's. I couldn't find the syphilis one, though, so kudos to the YouTube uploader in the previous post.

The Two-Thousand-Year-Old Computer
In 1901, a group of divers excavating an ancient Roman shipwreck near the island of Antikythera, off the southern coast of Greece, found a mysterious object - a lump of calcified stone that contained within it several gearwheels welded together after years under the sea. The 2,000-year-old object, no bigger than a modern laptop, is now regarded as the world's oldest computer, devised to predict solar eclipses and, according to recent findings, calculate the timing of the ancient Olympics. Following the efforts of an international team of scientists, the mysteries of the Antikythera Mechanism are uncovered, revealing surprising and awe-inspiring details of the object that continues to mystify.

Basically the Ancient Greeks were far more advanced cognitively and technologically then we give them credit for and invented the world's first etablet.

It's pretty much the perfect documentation of the trashy reality show that is America over the last decade or so.

What's the problem? There was nothing particularly graphic. Type "syphilis" into Google Images and you'll get genuinely freaked out there.

This was a great documentary. I always love a documentary that uses intriguing and surprising scientific discoveries to humanize or exonerate an unjustly maligned people. My two favorite things in one.

Right, and good thing it's holidays vacations. The show has been running for 10 seasons or so now, so what we've got on YouTube are episodes from the early seasons, which aren't available anymore on the PBS site. Way too addictive as it's incredible how much one learns about history through the episodes. I sure never knew that smack the middle of the first millenium AD, a massive volcano eruption has kept the sun's rays out of the earth and created a long-lasting famine bout, or that some scientists now are doubting that bubonic plague was the stem of the Black Death of the 14th century.

On a lighter note, here's a shorty explaining the origin of the carol Silent Night.

Are there any good documentaries regarding crime in late 40's Los Angeles? I know it's quite specific but I've always been really fascinated with that era and docs about it are oddly hard to find. I just watched James Ellroy's "Feast of Death" which was very fascinating despite focusing mostly on him as a person, but his recent docu-show on Discovery relies too much on strange pulpy presentation and awful re-enactments for me to enjoy it.

Anything concerning crime or law enforcement in 40's LA I'm up for.

Dancing boys of Afghanistan

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-dancing-boys-of-afghanistan/

The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan exposes the horrific practice called Bacha Bazi, in which young Afghan boys are sold to warlords and powerful businessmen to be trained as dancers who perform for male audiences in women’s clothing and are then used and traded for sex. The practice is sadly making a comeback in that country.

The upside of the Taliban was that this "practice" was outlawed. I can't wrap my head around how this became a thing when Persian women are so drat beautiful..

Deep Water is really good. Someone recommended this doc in another thread and I just watched it on Netflix. I don't want to give anything away because the story gets kind if creepy and crazy, but it's about the very first time there was a solo around-the-world sailing race in the late 60's and the doc tells about one of the contestants in that race. Things get pretty weird from there, it's really fascinating.

I saw WOM and it's a well made documentary, and I preferred it to Paradise Lost personally. I tried to watch that back around 10 or so years ago and only made it about an hour through. I can't remember the exact reasons it didn't gel with me, and I'm sure I meant to pick it up again as I always found the case interesting.

WOM feels a bit more complete, it has a beginning, middle and an end afterall as opposed to being a mouthpiece for a group of individuals who are currently incarcerated, but it did bug me in the way a lot of documentaries do in the way it's trying to push an objective as opposed to documenting events in an unbiased form.

When the film actually makes a point that going after Byers originally because he 'fit the bill' was just as bad as the police dept targeting the WM3 because they were 'weird', it seems to completely forget this as it then decides to focus the attention on going after Hobbs. Throughout the last hour, there's really not much brought up against him - extremely tenuous DNA against him (and his friend, which then gets dropped almost immediately), a serious of recorded phonecalls that reveal nothing, and some grinning teens claiming to have overheard a conversation. Oh, he beat his kids and had a charge of sexual assault against him therefore it must be him. Case closed.

There's no doubt that Hobbs is a piece of poo poo, it seems most people who are wrapped up in this story are - from the families of the victims to the police department, but making a film that is essentially designed to finger point someone with no hard evidence seems immoral.

It's a shame, I wish the film had been a bit more objective and considered more possibilities, including that the WM3 are possibly guilty, but that is never going to cross the minds of a team that have been campaigning for them for over a decade, and has one of the WM3 listed as a producer.

I love documentary film making, but I can't watch them without questioning everything. Twisting the truth in entertainment based docs like 'King of Kong' is one thing - and that didn't sit well with me - but when you're talking about the death of children it's particularly in poor taste to sell a viewpoint as documented fact. The amount of people who'll now say Hobbs murdered those children! because of seeing a single documentary that insinuated this. It feels no better than what happened the first time around.
