So I finally got HOI 3 because it was on sale on Steam and what the hell am I doing? :stare:

There's so many drat screens and options. I tried playing as the USSR just like I did to learn how to play HOI 2 and I can't figure out what I should be doing. Should I be trying to move people into the Comintern? Should I build a bunch of IC like you're supposed to in HOI 2? Should I research tanks? Infantry?

Is there an instructional Let's Play or anything I can use to help me figure out how to play this game? I know it's not the most popular Paradox game but it looks really neat even if it's flawed and I'd like to avoid getting my rear end kicked by the Nazis on my first play-through while I bumble around like an idiot.

Kneel Before Zog posted:

Could someone describe instances of easily attainable fun to be had in Victoria 2?

Play as the USA and try to prevent the Civil War from happening as long as you can. I had a lot of fun doing that. And then when the Civil War came I enjoyed crushing those dirty rebels in under 2 years. The USA is setup really well to allow you to learn the game's mechanics as it has an easily winnable war against Mexico and annexing Texas gives you 4 different population types to work with (Yankee, Dixie, Texan and Native American) so you can see how things work.

After I finished the Civil War I worked on making an American Empire by acquiring all the islands in the Caribbean while turning the country into a socialist dictatorship. The colonization was pretty easy but socialism didn't take root except in Michigan and Pennsylvania. I still managed to get a few Socialist Presidents but I couldn't complete the revolution :ussr:. Doing this forced me to learn how to deal with production management since you can't just let your Capitalists build everything.

My endgame was a Great War with the USA, Germany, Portugal, Austria-Hungary and Japan going to war with Spain, France and the UK. The UK never released Canada so the Candadian front was very exciting and fighting in Europe was focused in Portugal instead of France, giving World War I a much more interesting dynamic with lots of amphibious assaults from both sides.

Trying to win the Civil War as the CSA is also quite a challenge from what I hear if you'd like a more difficult goal. When the Civil War happens you get a decision on whether you want to control the Union or the Confederates so you can still use the regular start date.

So, I've completed my first self-imposed mission in Victoria 2/AHD with the Pop Demand Mod installed: survive as the United States of Central America until at least the 20th century, remain a democracy, and become either a Secondary Power or Great Power. Things looked bleak at first - in the 1840s the National Party, a reactionary party, was elected to power and turned the country into a dictatorship. They lingered around until being forced from power by a Militant Socialist uprising in the late 1860s and everything's been fine and dandy ever since. The Presidential elections are so heavily skewed towards the Socialists that we're effectively a one-party state, but other than that we're a free and open democracy. The political and social reforms we've rammed through means that the USCA has the highest rate of immigration in the entire world, even more so than the United States, and we have minimal militancy and unrest.

Becoming a Secondary Power was slightly harder, but it was made a lot easier when Yucatan declared independence from Mexico and decided to join my country, giving me an entire extra state right off the bat. After that it's just been decades of building up prestige and industry while maintaining a moderately-sized military to deal with the occasional nationalist uprising. I also managed to conquer Haiti and Panama, but was then strongarmed by the United States into giving them the Panama Canal Zone. :smith:

As of 1915, USCA is the 13th-ranked nation in the entire world, the only nation with 'Unity' as their National Value, and is most probably the most culturally diverse nation on the planet, with fully a third of the population from foreign cultures and Mahayana Buddhism the second-largest religion in the country. I have no idea how I created a socialist utopia without cheating, but it's awesome.

Other fun stuff from this playthrough so far (it's now early 1914):

-Scandinavia united into a single country early on, then the monarchy was quickly overthrown by Jacobin rebels and liberal democratic Scandinavia has been one of the Great Powers ever since, with loving massive African colonial holdings.
-The American Civil War didn't start until 1875, and the Confederacy inexplicably took over and cored the Mexican state of Chihuahua at some point. The Union ended up defeating them decisively and annexing them, and Chihuahua has been an American state ever since. My pretty borders! :(
-Every single German minor state, along with Prussia, fell to Communist revolution in sequence in the 1890s and then united into the communist North German Federation, except for one tiny West German state (can't remember which) that remained as an independent communist nation. Austria-Hungary fell to socialist revolution in the early 1900s, followed shortly by the Netherlands falling to communism. There's now a huge-rear end bloc of leftist nations in Central Europe.
-France and Italy both fell to Fascist revolutions in reaction to the Communist risings, and fascists also took over Spain and reformed it into Carlist Spain. Western Europe is now run almost entirely by fascists or reactionaries.
-Roughly a third of the Chinese warlord cliques have turned democratic.
-Sokoto still exists as an independent nation.
-Colombia didn't abolish slavery until 1911.

This is actually my favorite part of Paradox games, playing as a mostly minor and insignificant nation and watching weird and interesting things happen in the rest of the world. :allears:

Currently looking forward to the Mother of All Wars which is almost certainly about to go down in Europe. Curious about what Russia will do, they're a major wildcard - constitutional monarchy controlled by a liberal/reformist party with significant civil and political rights, but less than friendly towards the commies.

I converted over Can Omer's map to EU3+ 1.01, and this is the result. There's probably a few bugs in it, but far as I can tell it's pretty good. It doesn't change the province count, just the look of the map, so the balance is all the same. It's mostly great because the Caribbean and various other islands aren't just circular blobs anymore, as well as just looking great in general. Test it out, and see how it goes.

You missed including EU3+'s Aalborg/Lucca provinces, and in the interface folder you had files pointing to Can Omer's title screen (which wasn't included) and a bad link to the minimap that was searching inside a non-existant mod/Can Omer/.

They were both turned into a province in Iceland and Greenland, respectively, in the original map mod. I turned the second into the province of Luks, as I thought Prussia was relatively weak with only 2 provinces, and being sandwiched above Poland. Didn't know about the graphics problems though, so thanks.

The main issue is that it's a lot easier getting out of synch. Don't expect to be running over speed 3, and certainly don't count on passing speed 2 during a war. Late game, with the increased number of POPs and goods it's almost unplayable if you're not physically in the same room. At least that has been my experience.

So... basically the complete opposite of EU4, where I have a really good feelings about it and the screenshots and DDs have only made it look/sound better.

I'm getting the same feeling about East vs West and it makes me sad.

I liked Arsenal of Democracy a lot, but I think I mostly liked it for its slight usability improvements and the addition of casualty statistics (as abstracted as they were). I liked being able to see how many millions had died in warfare as the years wore on.

@Gorgo Primus: maybe since these questions pop up a lot, and since the thread is still new, add a list of 4-5 "beginner" countries to each of the major games' blurbs in the OP? My take:

CK2: Dukes of Munster/Meath (Ireland), King of Poland, King of Croatia, Duchy of Apulia, any of the Christian Kings in Spain
EU3: Austria, England, Castille
Vic2: Brazil, Belgium, Prussia, Sweden, USA
HoI2/3/DH: USA, Germany, USSR

Re-start until Aragon gets a vassalize mission on you, lose the war, use your fantastic sliders to get ridiculous trade income, rush Quest for the New World (switch ideas when you hit Naval 7), make a colonial empire. If Castille is winning (and failing to properly annex Aragon), you should have an easy time getting independence in the mid 1550s and even grabbing some provinces, otherwise wait a bit more. Then murder some Americans, some Africans, some Indians, some Southeast Asians. By the 1600s you should be in position to conquer your way into France and/or Spain.

Works in Vanilla and MiscMods, not EU3+, as that places additional limitations on colonial efforts and trade. You really can't pull this off without exploiting game mechanics.

So no then. It's weird that it's independent for most of EU3's time frame, but the second you start a game they get absorbed immediately. It's like the second the game starts everyone goes war crazy.

I'm gonna say no for now unless theres a huge demand for it. I can't think of a place to put such a thing in the OP without breaking up its flow, and it would be really hard to come up with a list that most people agree on. For instance I would never in a million years suggest a new person play the USSR in HOI3 or USA in DH... but I'm sure there are people who have and would want them on the list. Then we'd either have a dumb long discussion over a largely arbitrary list (Brazil is great but Argentina is not because...? What does it have that Argentina doesn't?!), or a list so long, thorough, and useless that it eats the OP (the everything everyone wants on it approach).

Or I could be being dumb and someone has a really great idea for it and it fits in somewhere fine. But, I'm gonna go with no for now.

It's a little dated, but all of the core concepts are the same, and they do a pretty professional job. I've just picked up HOI3 again after being scared away the first time. I strongly encourage you to pick up the Complete version and the latest expansion. It really is a brand new game. Moving/retreating land forces too? Those would just melt away in <4 hours under a stack of Stukas in the original/early Darkest Hour.

The HoI2 air attack model always seemed to fluctuate wildly between "attacking ground units is like using the Death Star for close air support" and "Utterly useless to even bother with, use interdiction only".

In Kaiserreich, at least, tactical bombers and CAS still obliterate moving ground units and lone divisions involved in battles. It's how I won the Second American Civil War as the Syndicalists - just pummeled every enemy division to death one at a time with aircraft.
