Freddie Gibbs on some dubstep poo poo, DJ Muggs ft. Freddie Gibbs - Trapp Assassin Dat bass. It's not bad in my opinion, but I don't really like dubstep so won't be listening to this too much again. Gibbs verse is great as always though. Plum Chaser fucked around with this message at 17:44 on Jan 4, 2013 |

I just hope Danny keeps his lengths around the 230-4min mark like he did with XXX. Nothing sounded stale or too long.

A$AP Rocky's team-up with Skrillex, "Wild for the Night", bombs your cortex with screaming lasers, stadium-sized reverb, and a reggae-derived organ lope, and the beat feels like being on the receiving end of a perfectly executed Tekken chain combo. hahaha so good.

His mixtape with Stat Quo was unbelievably good during the reign of snap and crunk music from the South. ...But no more wishing and praying. I looked through the thread and saw this wasn't posted, so I went ahead and posted it. Death Grips just released a new music video of "Come Up and Get Me." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOs51Lvhn64 It is honestly one of the weirdest things I have ever seen in terms of a music video, and it clocks in at around 13 minutes. While I am a Death Grips fan, a lot of people I've attempted to introduce them to find them to be sort of a joke, or just plain terrible. Will they ever be taken seriously as a rap outfit or are they doomed to appeal to weird people like myself is the question for the future.

I was kinda blown away when I listened to a few of the tracks off No Love Deep Web just because it sounded legitimately sinister (though once I actually learned to understand MC Ride's voice it lost a lot of that, since those lyrics are kinda garbage ), unlike any other rap I've heard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iZZ16QUAjQ It succeeds at doing what a ton of gimmicky artists have tried before by using weird-rear end beats and tons of distortion instead of really loving dumb lyrics about serial killing and whatnot. I wouldn't count myself as a fan or anything, but I'm not aware of anything else that sounds like them.

And I didn't really listen much to Nehru Jackets until recently after Wild Water Kingdom, but it's real nice. Reloaded is too and I think it's a big jump from Marcberg, but I think this year was really really stacked. I still got a backlist of things I need to give more time to since it seems almost every other week there's a couple decent things coming out. Like I saw a couple of people mention Flatbush Zombies (which I thought was pretty nice), there's another dude who put out a couple tapes with a similar style that I was bumping for awhile but I'd swear I'm the only one who ever seen them (Dirtyy Hendrixx "Abracadabra" and another I can't remember the name of). And half the time I end up downloading stuff and not listening for a couple weeks/months, and forget where I even got it or heard of it. Just hope next year continues the trend. ----- And I think the death grips discussion came up before, but would they really be considered "rap" if the lead wasn't a black dude calling himself MC?

Death Grips are basically terrible. What else did I like this year? I really enjoyed Antwon and Lushlife, they are both basically hipster hyphy tho (Lushlife is basically rap/chillwave x-over, Antwon is maybe a bit more complex but his biggest song this year was produced by Pictureplane and emulated PM Dawn's 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss') and I actually like their 2011 or earlier stuff - Fantasy Beds Mixtape, No More Golden Days - than their 2012 issues, some of yall will be familiar with Lush's production (he raps entirely liked he learned it off 'Illmatic') on Heems' airhorn extravaganza 'Soup Boys (Pretty Drones)', probably the song I listened to most - or the song I listened to most that wasn't produced by Mike WiLL Made It - this year. Another producer that really caught my ear was DJ Dahi, who yall def know off Kendrick's 'Money Trees', but he also did the Dom Kennedy banger 'My Kinda Party', the fuckin... angel-sent beat on Smoke DZA's 'Kony' and a couple other real nice things, some Grande Marshall tracks. I also basically enjoyed Ryan Hemsworth superceding Clams Casino this year, the Deniro Farrar/Shady Blaze KOBK project was prolly the nicest Green Ova release (although that $20 MAz album sounds really good, I'm not paying that much for it, even though I prob should given the swathes of great free music they've gave me.)

Oh, and Skyzoo released an album and (paid) mixtape, I feel like everybody (myself included) just takes him for granted, just another bunch of great beats, lyrics, delivery, just SOP for Skyzoo - I particularly liked Range Rover Rhythm http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d_AxgrKBkik, but am not overfamiliar with Jahlil Beats' other stuff, as it's mostly for the bombastic and dull Meek Mill, although probably not any longer.

Yeah I listened to that death grips stuff and I liked it on the first listen. However it does get really annoying when people put it on literally all the time. I am listening to this Chance '10 Day', it is helluva impressive - it's... I see he has Alex Wiley guesting on it, that's Kembe X' friend, he probably bears comparison, another young Chicago talent who isn't Chief Keef; the production is quite "new rap" as opposed to Kembe's more traditional sound.

I consider Death Grips punk/rap crossover but I get why people wouldn't like them. Mostly uncomprehensible lyrics, lots of hype, and an unconventional sound. There's still elements of traditional hip hop production under it all. You'll hear the 808s, the sampling, the tempo... I think they're trying to convey a mood rather than a message and their stuff hits the spot for manic frustration. No Love Deep Web was pretty boring though. The way they released it was cool at least.

Deniro is nice, he just seems to work well with a lot of producers; Silkky Johnson, Fr1endzone, Ryan Hemsworth, etc - he's not particularly lyrical or dynamic in the flow, but some of that BSBD collab really hit me in the gut, he works well within his parameters (I'd compare him to Smoke DZA in this respect, nothing innately special on the mic but a great collaborator) - I'd say he's more a Green Ova affiliate than anything, because of this (aforementioned, very good) collab with Shady Blaze: http://denirofarrar.bandcamp.com/album/kill-or-be-killed
