What's with the 'evil' looking scientist? This isn't the first time I've seen him in the Alpha screenshots of HL - perhaps he was a villain in an earlier version of the story.

Is it possible to play co-op in Duke Nukem 3D with War of Attrition? I googled around but couldn't find anything about this. Also The Kins: Would it be possible to have some sort of creditlist for all the stuffs thats in Reelism? I constantly wonder about some of the guns and enemies i see in the game and what games they are originally from, like the Jackhammer shotgun. I realise it would be a huge undertaking writing all that stuff down.

I just had this thought about having some kind of commentary/wiki mode where you could pause the game at anytime, click on stuff at the screen like the gun or an enemy and a little infobox would show up with descriptive text about the history and origin behind the gun/enemy/item. Alternatively have it as a submenu with a long list. It's just a stupid idea for a nerd like myself, just focus on getting the new version out!

I've been playing through Congestion 1024 with Brutal Doom and holy poo poo is it hard. The splash damage from everything makes it way too easy to blow yourself up and way too easy to get blown up by...anything. I have never hated imps more. Don't even ask about Revenants. Congestion 384 was actually a bit easier since it's easy to funnel monsters into a shooting gallery scenario. Except the cyberdemon level, gently caress that level. Any suggestions for wads based around novel concepts that actually turn out well?

What the Hell is the Duke HR pack doing to my GOG.com copy of DN3D? Every time I try installing it, it replaces the thing with Shareware, on top of further slacking and not giving me sweet, sweet 3D. ^^ Try the sequel, too, which is basically if you made every 90s beat-'em-up an FPS. Also, Batman Doom is a pretty nifty exercise.

When installing the HRP, do not overwrite duke3d.grp in the GOG folder. In fact, it might be better to install them to separate locations and copy the file from the GOG folder to your HRP folder. To see the 3D graphics, make sure to enable "autoload" folder from the launcher.

Hey Quake gurus or potential Quake players. Every now and then I gird my loins and answer questions in the Steam Quake forum. With the new "Guides" feature I'm thinking I should collect some info in a nice format that I could then just point at in the future. Y'all might be interested in the content of the guides that I have posted so far... and also you could correct me if I've gotten something wrong. The guides stuff is kind of under the radar at the moment, so I've got a window to fix errors before these guides collect many eyeballs. Here's a Quake engines overview: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=118401000 And here's how to get the soundtrack to play without a CD: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=119489135 (I figure it might also be useful to have general info about using the console or command line, and specific instructions on managing widescreen resolutions and FOV, but I'm tired of typing for now.)

It's expecting you to unpack Duke3d itself into the HRP and not the other way around, I think. By default it comes with the demo files, so you can play without needing the actual game, but this also means if you do it the wrong way around it overwrites the real game with the demo. You should also be launching it using eDuke32 and not the DOSBox launcher from GOG, and make sure you enable 3d models in the video settings if you actually want them.

I saw that there's QuakeAdapter for Worldcraft 3.3. Is it any good? I've never tried GTKRadiant, so I don't know much about it.

I'm not completely up to speed on how Quake mappers ply their trade these days. func_msgboard is undoubtedly the place to go with any interesting questions (e.g. http://celephais.net/board/view_thread.php?id=4 ). Possibly also some info available at quakeone.com (e.g. http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-help/servers-coding/6630-best-quake-1-map-editor-noob-2011-a.html ) and/or quakeworld.nu (e.g. http://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/topic/4738 ). From a bit of searching it seems like an old pre-Hammer version of WorldCraft can be adapted to use for Quake as you mentioned (maybe Hammer can be too?), and GtkRadiant has a Quake mode, and there's also a passle of other more "niche" editors that still have fans like QuArK, BSP, and Qoole. GtkRadiant is proooobably the only one still in active development? (Edit: I've used GtkRadiant for Quake 3 and it is a good tool.) Beyond editor selection there'll also be the question of setting up the proper toolchain for compiling the map. Like http://www.quaddicted.com/tools/map_compilers or http://disenchant.net/utils.html . JLaw fucked around with this message at 04:16 on Jan 12, 2013 |

Depends on what you mean by improve. Modern Quake engines fix a lot of rendering bugs. Many of them also add optional special effects, and you can download hi-res texture packages, new HUDs, new weapon models, fonts, and so forth. There are also some "updated" monster models out there but I'm dubious about whether you can find a really good set of those. One thing you might want to experiment with for Quake is downloading the nQuake package ( http://www.nquake.com/ ) which has a really easy set-up; it includes the ezQuake engine with some hi-res textures and other media, and various graphics presets from "sort of faithful" to "maximum gaudy". Another possible thing to play with is the "Quake Epsilon" package ( http://www.xpfree.org/epsilon/ ) which includes the DarkPlaces engine and a buuuunch of new media. I should add a note about this to my engines guide. If you want to go with the "ultra" setting there, pay special attention to the performance-tweak note about reflecting_overload.pk3 ... even on a pretty beefy machine I had to disable the reflective glass to make it perform well. (In the end though I usually prefer to play using a "classic" engine like QuakeSpasm configured for faithful rendering... minimally filtered pixels, square particles, the works.) For Quake 2 I'm not sure about the easiest stuff to try. There are certainly new engines and textures for that too. I know of a couple of easy-install packages from http://q2s.tastyspleen.net/ and http://nquake.com/2/ but I'm not really current with Quake 2. Epsilon looks fantastic, thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. If anyone has anything similar for Quake 2 I'd love to know. Same with Wolfenstein 3D, but I really doubt that exists.

Also, on the Duke Hi-res thing: I'm trying to get it to load the Hi-Res, but EDuke just looks like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/19696375/eduke.png It won't expand to allow me to select a folder, and I've checked that the Hi-Res pack is in autoload. 3D models are active, but it still pixelates Duke's weapons and the enemies...
