It's ridiculous.

What kind of rocket attack was that? It seemed to be subsonic and I saw like 2 frames of something rocket-looking at a 45 degree or so angle. Some Katyusha variant?

BM-21 Grad seems the most likely, they've been using them a lot recently, even with cluster munitions, which civilians keep picking up and end up getting killed by. Speaking of Syria, and Syria being blown to poo poo, a new bomb has been sighted in the Homs region, and I'm buggered if I can figure out what it is, hoping some of you might have a clue. Here's one of the clearer examples of it being used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HItSz8JhpU There's more videos of them being used here, and from what I can tell they have parachutes, are dropped in groups of 4-6, and appear to have time delayed fuzes. I've been tracking the arms used in Syria for months, and I've put together this post with the weapons commonly used by the air force, supported with UXO evidence, and this doesn't seem to match any of the ones used so far. Meanwhile, here's some examples of Syrian DIY rockets not working quite as they should https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUJn7H6Cxic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeXBZpsjmQE Brown Moses fucked around with this message at 22:49 on Jan 21, 2013 |

I think it's just a FAB variant with the aforementioned delayed fuze and parachute added as options which leads to some kind of letter salad designation. You can see a demonstration of Indian Airforce MiG-27s doing a drop with smaller ones here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWGe_h6Ihdo There's little info available as far as I can gather but at least there's a nifty hungarian slideshow here (so SN for retarded maybe?). It's from the BOCN apparantly so maybe you could register there and look in their downloads/references section. e: typo Koesj fucked around with this message at 00:15 on Jan 22, 2013 |

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I'm hoping some UXO will turn up eventually and make life easier for me. Another thing that's interesting about that video is how low they are flying, which suggests they don't believe there's the MANPADS threat in the Homs region they face in other parts of the country.

Is it just due to sheer incompetence or that fact that the Syrian military have never looked after their munitions but there seems to me to be more UXO than actual exploded ordinance

During the cold war a lot of countries in the mid east were "gifted" scads of munitions from the Soviet Union, ostensibly waiting for the big war with Israel or the US or whatever. I have a feeling they mostly sat in warehouses and not much attention was paid to them after the crates were stacked.

Thanks, here's another mysterious explosion from Syria. Last week there was an attack on Aleppo University, in a government controlled area. Two large explosions, with the opposition claiming it was a government jet or rockets, and the government claiming variously it was car bomb or rebel rockets/missiles. This new video of the event appears to show it was a rocket or missile rather than a car bomb, but it's still unclear what sort of size of munition could cause the shown explosion, so it's still unclear if it was a jet, or surface to surface missile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eka1FK_iJIU

Hey Brown Moses have you seen any evidence in ordnance debris that would support the claim that the Syrians have already used chemical weapons? How does a crumpled chemical munition differ in appearance from a conventional round? I tried googling for clues but unfired munitions look awfully like every other round, and considering how this war has gone I'd half expect to see 80-gallon drums with Mr Yuk on the side chucked out of helicopters.

None I've seen, and as you say it's hard to know if they did. If I did find UXO evidence of chemical weapons I'd probably organise a parade in my honour to let everyone know I found it first.
