I ended up going to Hung's on Wardour St, this tiny place with about 4 tables. Their wontons had actual prawns in, and were delicious!

Hung's is great. Their BBQ and congee has an excellent rep too.

I saw the BBQ meats hanging in the window and was very tempted... Next time! Their tea wasn't jasmine, though, which, while not unpleasant, wasn't what I expected.

Don't want to derail too much into places to drink as opposed to places to eat, but does anyone have any experience of Milk & Honey or any of the other Rushmore group places (Danger of Death etc.)?

I ask because I'm moving down soon and was quite taken by the idea of a quiet, relaxed members only bar (also seen it rated as one of the best bars in the world in a few articles). Is it a good experience or just a bit wanky and funded by posers with more money than sense?

Not formally you can't but I know people have had tables discreetly held for them. They require you to get there early for it though.

How was the queuing time? I went to the one off Oxford Street on a visit not long ago and didn't mind the 45 min wait, but I have a few friends who hate the trend of not being able to book a table in advance.

Hey so I am still undecided on where to take the family (including a pesky vegetarian) for my graduation dinner next week. Was thinking of Chez Bruce since they do a nice set of stuff but they've only got a super late seating.

I'm not a massive foodie; neither am I looking for a specific type of cuisine. I'd just like something nicer than average that me and the folks sitting down in suits would feel is a bit special.

I genuinely considered Hawksmoor for a bit but their non-meat menu is lacking.

I do not mind a (reasonable) queue, especially if there is a bar.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

10 minutes waiting time on a Saturday night for us (albeit it was pretty snowy this weekend) and at they have a very cool bar that you can have a drink at while you wait.

I believe at the Hoxton branch you can also reserve tables.

I've always thought the Chancery (http://thechancery.co.uk/) is really above par food at very reasonable prices for their set menu. Not much of a bar though.

Something like Zucca might be nice? Or Bocca Di Lupo? I find Italian is a good balance for things like this because they quite often will have some vegetarian salads and pastas which don't suffer from the lack of meat!

( Congrats on your graduation dude, btw :) )

Ooh, looks good. A quick squit at the menu rams home something that's starting to annoy me about gourmet burger places. If I'm paying £8 for the privilege of enjoying a single burger, you could throw in a few fries with it.

Thanks. Thing is, I'm not feeling Italian, like, at all. It just doesn't feel special (even if it is, don't get me wrong). Plus, for my undergrad graduation we did Italian. :P

The Almighty
Bangkok Garden in Barnes was criminally cheap with a Taste card (as I recall it was ~£26 for a starter, mains and wine for 2) and rather delicious. Bombay Lounge is near Angel and we ended up not using the Taste card because it was so yummy that we felt it would be a disservice to cash in on the discount. I'm a big fan of both places, and they're probably the best I've had on the scheme.

Paradise by way of Kensal Green accepts the TasteCard and is very good. Can be a little hipstery, but the food makes up for it. Good bar, too.

Although last time I went, I was waiting for my food and saw there's a pub next door that does all sorts of burgers and ribs and barbecue, so I'll have to give that a look soon.

I'm going to be in London for in a couple of weeks time. It's mostly a business trip where I don't get to decide where to eat, but I'll have half a Monday to myself. Where should I have lunch? Something near Victoria station would be convenient since I need to catch a train to Gatwick afterwards.

Went to Flat Iron Friday evening. It was superb, the service was the best I've seen in a restaurant, and even though they don't take reservations and it took us about an hour to get a table it didn't feel like it was time wasted.

Also, the popcorn is probably the best popcorn I've ever had. The fries were excellent, and the steak was so good I had two.

Victoria is a bit of a dessert for good food tbh.

Theres a good burrito place not too far from the station, run by an ex-pat american: http://www.picantemexicangrill.co.uk The website is as dreadful as the burritos are good.

Otherwise you could go down to the Laughing Halibut for a really good fish and chips: http://www.qype.co.uk/place/151992-The-Laughing-Halibut-London

Went to Honest Burger in Soho on Saturday night - amazing! Walked in just after 7pm, they took my name and mobile number so we could go find a nearby pub, they called about 1 hour 15mins later when our table was ready - really good system for popular places like this. We both had the Honest Burger (cheese, bacon, onion jam, amazing) which came with rosemary salt chips which were probably the best chips I've ever had. The beer was good as well.

Sunday we went to Ben's Canteen in Clapham Junction for brunch - full english with bloody mary's in jam jars - also very very good but a little pricey.

This weekend was a very good weekend for food.

Bodeans Soho does this and it's realyl handy. the only downside is getting so smashed in the Jon Snow you forgot you even meant to get food.

Went to Tonkotsu on Saturday, to make up for general tube and weather related misery. Really good food, but 11 quid getting two slices of porn and half an egg on your noodles is pretty miserly. I could live in a bath made of that broth though, SO piggy.

a) I'm not sure how I would deal with 2 slices of porn on my noodles.
b) I didn't really enjoy Tonkotsu that much when I went. I wasn't feeling great which didn't help, but I've had way better meals at Bone Daddies for the same price.

£11 for two slices of porn does seem steep considering most people don't pay for it at all.

I jest.

So I visited Belgo in Covent Garden on Saturday and managed to get sat in half an hour with no reservation which I was chuffed about. The beers and the Moules were fantastic. If you like mussels or belgian beer I'd definitely recommend it. Wasn't too expensive either really. The only fault was my girlfriend was so drunk by this point in the evening that she fell asleep at the end of the meal (she does this everytime she's drunk), which meant I didn't get to have Waffles for dessert. Planning on taking my family there when they come to visit.

I went to the pop-up at the Owl and Pussycat on Redchurch Street last summer and it was unbelievably good for only £10. I assume they must sous-vide it to get it so tender.

I find Belgo Covent Garden a good bet because there's a reasonable bar to have a drink while you wait for a table. Nothing wrong with hanging around and sampling a few beers before your mussels.
