Arcades as a whole have all but died here in Finland anyway. You find an odd pinball machine or an arcade cabinet in gas stations and such, but in major cities, there are no arcades. There are casinos, though. I'm not sure what killed the arcades, is it the fact that handheld consoles made their breakthrough or that cellphones and tablets are nowadays "busy" gamers choices for a quick fix? To me, going to a local arcade was always an exciting feeling, like going to the movies. It's just not the same at home, no matter what kind of rigs you have.

Finland is also special in arcade business in that gambling is heavily regulated by the government through RAY (raha-automaattiyhdistys, AKA slot machine association). The story goes that arcades died not only because kids started playing arcade games at home but also due to the business being effectively strangulated by this association. Since RAY has a monopoly in gambling (read: slot machines in general), regulation fees for anyone interested in opening an arcade come into play. As far as RAY's opinion goes, there is no distinction in playing for money or fun (durr it has a coin slot of course it's the same :downs:).

Being a Finn myself, I remember there being two arcade franchises in Finland: Neo Geo Land and Pelikan. The former closed it doors years ago and Pelikan (now PELIKA) had a few arcades around the country but all of them have been closed to not being profitable. PELIKA continues in importing and distributing slot machines in Finland to this date, mainly supplying video game arcades to the few theme parks we have here. Last I went to the local one, however, all games except Sega Rally and some whack-a-mole clone were gone. It's highly unlikely arcades will make a return.

Neo Geo Land I went to week after week was fantastic. That's where I first played Metal Slug 3 as well. Yes, Metal Slug is the game every arcade worth it must have, even in this country far to the north.

I'm too poor to have private messages, so I'll just throw this here for jyrque and others:

It's an arcade with all kinds of classic games in a local small amusement park. I'm planning to make a visit next summer, since up until recently I didn't even know they have that there.

If you're into arcade games, especially if you reside in Northern California, I would suggest checking out California Extreme at http://www.caextreme.org. It's the largest collector owned arcade show in the world. Essentially private owners bring their machines to one location for a weekend, you pay a modest fee to get in, and everything is on free play from 10:30am - 2am Saturday / Sunday and 10:30am - 9:00pm Sunday. Some of the remaining industry parts suppliers have tables and Stern Pinball has had a setup over the past couple years but really it's just people that collect and restore the games. You can buy and sell there as well; I've bought machines off the floor in previous years. There's a lot of pinball there in addition to arcade games but if pinball is more your thing, there's the Pacific Pinball Exposition in San Rafel which is the largest pinball show in the world and of course the awesome Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda. That would have been an awesome location to shoot an arcade segment during the USA special.

A lot of the arcades I've seen/heard of (in the US) that are still thriving have basically started doing this. They just charge an entry fee and have all the games set to free to play. From what I've heard a lot of arcades have been doing way better with this method. It's better to me too, I'd spend probably more than that anyway and then i won't have to keep going to the change machine or digging out coins.

There was an arcade I used to frequent that let you buy time on a swipecard. You could play whatever you want for however many hours you bought. Gameworks does this too, doesn't it?

This reminds me of a place I went to once that also used cards, except it was all a giant scam. All the machines had a card reader instead of a coin slot. You would load the card with money (I think $10 was the minimum), and then you could play the games until your money ran out, or until an hour or two passed, at which point your card is deactivated and you don't get any of your unspent funds back.

I must be the only person to grow up in the 80s/90s who never liked and doesn't miss arcades. Yeah, some of them were alright, but usually they were smelly, the cabinets poorly maintained, and the games little more than the forerunners of today's Free To Play titles. Designed to part you from your money as fast as possible.

I wish I had good arcade memories. Basically all we had here was Time Crisis, Daytona and Metal Slug. I like all three, but variety is nice.

Though I did once get to play in some MechWarrior pods with my little brother and that was absolutely amazing. It was like every nerd dream I ever had come true.

There are so many releases queued up right now you have no idea. But once that's done with, I'd like to work on an unconventional episode. These will all be done eventually, but choose what you'd most like to see first!

Game Center [CX] - Taito (1 hr): The very first episode of Game Center [CX]. Arino talks to the creators of Invaders, Go By Train, and Takeshi's Challenge. He also takes on Takeshi's Challenge and we see a glimpse of the mysterious AD Yamada.

Southernmost Game Travelogue (36 min): Since Arino looked for the Northernmost game in Japan, he goes the opposite direction this time with Kibe, Nakayama and Abe in tow. It's mostly these four dudes hanging out. UPDATE: winner by a landslide

Live Takeshi's Challenge Challenge (2 hrs): Unless we all go insane, this will be the only live challenge you'll ever see subbed in its entirety. Once you see this, you'll get the gist of what all the other live challenges are like, the only difference being that the other challenges stretch on for 8+ hours.

You're right though Ineffiable, we should release the Taito special before the Live Takeshi's Challenge.

Yeah, while I fully admit Taito might not be as interesting, it's an important episode. We see Arino begin his 10+ year career as the host of GCCX. It's also more of the first few episodes where we have discussions with game creators, and we don't have many of those already.

Arcades died in large part because they kept gouging customers and strangling developers' choices (since they had to make sure their games were gougy enough to please the arcade/bar owners) and were generally run by people who had utter contempt for their patrons or the medium of games and would get moody if someone played for more than 3 minutes on a single quarter. Both customers and publishers were more than happy to break free of that system.

They were often dimly lit, overcrowded, unsafe and all-around shady, to boot.

GCCX on one of the VOD services, especially Netflix since it's the most recognized one, would be amazing in terms of getting the show more exposure.

It would also be the end of SA-GCCX, which would be kind of disappointing since it means no more of the segments that they can't license like tamages and the weird random stuff like Ring Ring Tactics or Everything I Learned I Learned From Strategy Guides.

I have mixed feelings about it, I guess, since it would be good for the show overall.

Sorry, I thought that if a service licensed out the episodes, they'd get the Japanese DVD cuts, like Discotek. I did jump to conclusions pretty hard there, and I'm embarrassed about that. The show would still be good and I'm sure people could release segments separately, like with the first set, and keep episodes that aren't in the deal available.

I feel like you're making a big assumption that it would be any more than the Discotek episodes. Nothing else has been officially translated, as far as we know, so it'd be some serious work to bring over their entire catalogue.
