I've just started getting into Dawn of War 2 properly, but the skirmishes I've played have left me scratching my head in terms of how I should be playing the game. What's the general attitude the game flow expects? I feel like I'm playing too conservatively.

For what its worth I found playing magicky characters to be the most fun because you are always doing stuff. Punch man characters were kind of dull because all they did was run up and punch people over and over until they died but that requires nothing on your part other than go punch that guy.

Anyway a lot of the spells have a save versus mechanic where you cast spell x and it will only do half damage if the victim makes a save versus y. There are three types of save versus, there is a reflex save, a fortitude save and a will save. The stronger your dexterity the better your reflex save and so on for I think constitution/strength and intelligence/wisdom with the fortitude and will saves. The save types match up with class types as well so rogues have strong reflex saves and wizards have strong will saves. The trick to playing a mage effectively is to look at your enemies and see what kind of saves they will have. So if you see a bunch of rogues you don't cast fireball because that has a reflex save built into it. You cast a spell that has save versus will and they will all fail to make the save because they have poo poo will save stats. Its very rock paper scissors. So read the spell descriptions.

Oh and at various points in the game you will be fighting a shitload of undead so spells that involve fire or sunlight are definitely worth picking up. The game generally does broadcast to you though what you are going to be fighting.

Late in the game and especially in motb there are a bunch of spells called missle storm that get really useful because they just do upfront straight damage no save versus and you can empower them all. So yeah keep an eye out for those because casting a bunch of those in a row on a guy will flatten him. The spells called bigby's fist or whatever are really good too. They do weak damage over time but are pretty much guaranteed to lock people in place so you can throw poo poo at them.

You mean singleplayer, right? You are mostly expected to charge stuff head on while using your skills and your units in their proper roles most of the time - Assault Marines to tangle dangerous ranged units/disperse dangerous melee units, Tactical Marines to bear the brunt of the fighting, Devastators to provide covering fire and discourage assaulters, Scouts to recon the area and deal high, focused damage, and just point towards the area you want annihilated with your Force Commander/Dreadnought. :v:

If you mean the multiplayer, you are expected to be constantly capping stuff and de-capping their stuff - you need to maintain at least a full power farm at all times (3 generators), and to harass theirs as many times as you can (use flamers). You want to get a vehicle or Anti-vehicle weapons if you lost the race to Tier 2. Don't waste your units - veterancy is great. This game is mostly fought through counter choices - if the enemy only has line infantry, you get weapon teams, which forces the other guy to get assault infantry, which you'll be countering with your own specialist melee/staggered retreat. At the end of the day, the one with the best power income ends up winning most of the time. :v:
Having poo poo loads of fast cappers is also extremely effective and infuriating when you realize you can't win in a straight fight.

Strictly singleplayer advice:

Combat is about wearing down the opposition then closing in to sweep up with melee. It works differently with each race but this is a good metric. Orks are terrible at shooting but good at melee, you want to pin them down and engage weak units up close which usually causes them to run away really quick. Flamers are good against orks. Orks have rear end in a top hat jump units so keep everyone close together. Eldar are terrible at melee but excellent at shooting. You should take scouts into Eldar missions to destroy their deadly weapons platforms (if you have Cyrus' high powered shot, the sniper rifle is a one-hit kill) and then have assault marines jump in/out to scatter their shooters. Be really careful because if Eldar focus their fire on one unit, which they'll do against melee units, they're dead in seconds. Take plasma and rocket launcher weapons into Eldar fights to deal with all their vehicles. Tyranids are average at everything, they have an area attack that will suppress you, and their units are fast and can jump into melee. Tyranids are often grouped en masse so take shotguns and assault cannons to deal area damage and knock them back. Jump assaults and melee is really great because you'll scatter their entire force and Tyranids are kind of squishy. The same can't be said for their "vehicles" but they're slow and easily kited.

The best abilities in DoW2 are anything that puts the enemies on their rear end or stuns them. Flash grenades, grenades in general, the commander's charge and melee attack that causes explosions, assault marines jumping, and the dreadnauts stun. The scouts' ability to use accessories while cloaked is overpowered as poo poo especially when combined with the super powerful remote charges you get a bit later. Cyrus' "explosive/powered/flame shot" ability (it's different by weapon type) is also really good. Try to get Tarkus' ability that upgrades his squad as soon as possible. There was never a battle I didn't bring Tarkus and with terminator armor his squad is unstoppable.

If you begin a new day and a defense mission is available, do it first. You'll likely score a 100% and get 1-2 free deployments that day. Try to do the missions where you collect Tyranid DNA first and then finish it with the Into the Hive mission. You get a dreadnaut which wipes the floor with everything.

I'm just getting back into gaming now that I have a full time job, and can justify spending some time each week relaxing by playing video games. I guess I am looking for general recommendations based on my tastes... if it is ok to ask for them in this thread. I only ever play one at a time from start to completion, so I hate getting a game only to find it isn't my thing. So far some of the games I have enjoyed the most as the Dragon Age games, Bayonetta, Bioshock games, LA Noire, Alan Wake, The Walking Dead, RE series. I don't really deviate from action adventure, RPGs, and horror games. I'm not a melee or FPS player.

I'm considering Mass Effect right now, but wonder if it is worth investing time in all three games based on all the freaking out I heard over the last one, plus I don't know how in tune it is with my style of gaming. I tried Dead Space, and being my first time playing a game like that I found it difficult even on the easiest setting and stopped after a few hours and sold the game. I wonder if I might like it more now that I have broadened the types I play. Any other games I might like?

Edit: I've never played the Silent Hill series, and despite the issues people have with the HD collection is that a good way to go to try it out?

Mass Effect is probably perfect for you. Like Dragon Age, but more streamlined and of course an FPS. But if you like Bioshock (a shooter) and Dragon Age(a Bioware RPG game), I can't imagine not liking the Mass Effect series. All the freaking out about it is because of the ending of Mass Effect 3, which wasn't that great. But the series is seriously worth it!

Plus if you beat both Bioshocks you won't have any trouble, skills-wise, with the Mass Effect games. They are third-person shooters with health regeneration where you pause to use abilities, switch weapons, and issue team commands, so even their most frantic battles are considerably more chill than the constant juggling required by Bioshock.

There's an old joke about ZoE1 that it was the free game included with the MGS2 demo. It ends right when it starts to get good and answers almost none of the questions it raises, so if you're on a time limit, there's no reason not to skip straight to ZoE2 except for some generic animeplot. ZoE2 is the game ZoE1 was trying to be.

Edit Alternatively, you can get through it in a few hours, so if you wanna burn right through it before jumping into 2, go ahead.

I liked the first game's story more than the second. While ZoE2 is a straight better game, Dingo is practically nonexistant as a character past the excellent prologue and everything gets batshit insane towards the end. The first game is basically a war story from a civilian's point of view and how he's trying to abstain from fighting while hiding out in a sentient war machine. ZoE2 also had one too many escort missions including a boss battle that's entirely an escort mission and a gigantic battle where you have to babysit a bunch of weak troops. Give me the "minimize collateral damage with 1hp" missions from the first game any day.

e: Both games are straightforward, really linear. The only thing I need to say is to master the melee combat. It's a great way to take out enemies quickly but requires a little finesse in both games. You can also deal a lot of damage to enemies by grabbing them and throwing them into walls, objects or other enemies.

Both games are worth playing.

That's not really true. The second game's story has signs of being good, it's just crippled by a hilariously awful dub script. And the escort missions are actually drat fun. One of them you have to carry someone in a disabled mech, and you can just toss them away when you need to fight (they'll float down very slowly. You also have a ranged grab to retrieve them). The other is a massive battle between 40 friendly mechs against a shitload of basic enemy types. By the time you get to that mission, you have every weapon in the game and gather enough Subenergy and Metatron throughout to just go hog-wild. You can heal your damaged friendlies, and it's quite possible to get through without losing a single one.

The boss battle al-azad is referring to isn't as hard as it's made out to be. You just need to know what to watch for and look for the big telegraphed move for when to attack. You might fail it the first time, but you'll recognise the pattern.

I have a few. I am starting Assassins Creed III soon and I have played all of the others multiple times, I love the series. Is there anything I should know, such as is there a big difference between this one and the other ones?

Also I want to play Civilization 4 again but the other times I tried playing I have just kind of mulled around building stuff and not really know what i'm doing. Are there any tips for that? I have never played any of the previous civilizations.

If you have a save file from MGA1 you get to pick and keep 1 card from your previous deck for use in MGA2. I'd say more but I don't remember much of that game by this point. I will say that you are playing an excellent game though! :)

MotB is 10x better than the original. If you like the base game then you'll love Mask.

Mask has a much better story and writing, indeed some of the best story and writing of any RPG, but the combat is not particularly good. I found the special mechanic irritating, though some people didn't, and high level D&D is not a particularly well-balanced system. I highly recommend MotB and I think it's better than the base game but I'd recommend that someone develop a familiarity with D&D rules and gameplay before tackling it.

Anything for Devil Survivor 2? The first one had a few "blink and you'll miss it" things, 'it' being ways to save people. Also, the viability of any builds would be helpful too, as I tend to go Strength builds in SMT games and that kinda screwed me last game.

As the wiki says (heh, I think those were my comments) Strength builds are much more viable now. Specifically, Str/Agi builds, as there are skills which hit multiple times based on your Agility, the later version of which targets all enemies. It's also possible to have more than one person with Pierce, removing the biggest problem DS1 had. Do note that the various characters you recruit will fill pretty much every niche, though - there's one in particular who specs very well on the Str/Agi build, for example - so don't feel obligated to go with any one build.

In terms of saving people: the game notifies you in advance when someone is going to die much more clearly than DS1, and there's basically no gimmicks about it - just do the events with that person/searching for that person, and you'll save them.

-For the early game before you can do random/Wonder Mail Missions, don't forget your throwing items. Makes the fight against a certain criminal a LOT easier.

-Try to keep at least one High PP move on your leader. Even low power moves are still often enough to pack a whallop. Keep a Max Elixir or two available at all times and don't be afraid to use them because they're everywhere.

-When you die in a dungeon, any mons you recruited that run and are still with you at the time are lost. Similarly if the recruited mon dies and you have to reviver seeds, they're gone. However any mons sent to the guild as a result of having no room, are yours to keep regardless.

-Don't be fooled by the low accuracy, multi-hit moves, especially ranged ones like Bullet Seed, they are easily the best offensive moves in the game. Any move that provides self healing is incredibly invaluable, and speed raising moves make you practically invincible by letting you double/triple/quadruple turn your enemies. Treecko in particular can have all three and is a starter.

-When you stumble upon a monster house, step back into the hallway to take on the enemies one at a time. If you enter a floor on a Monster House, try to make for a hallway, or use moves that hit multiple targets, preferably ranged multi-hit moves or room hitting moves.

-IQ skills are not all AI tweaks. They also have some passive stat modifications among them. Your leaders IQ also affects what Tactics you can set for your allies IIRC.

-Hold onto your Gummis until Spinda's Cafe opens up, then always use them to make drinks there. You not only get the IQ boosts, but you're garunteed at least one stat boost per gummi as well, sometimes two.

-To figure out what Gummis a pokemon likes, beyond the one(s) that match its typing, look at a type matchup chart. The more damage they would take from a move of that type, the more they'll like the gummi and they'll get a bigger IQ bonus. (So a water type would love Yellow Gummis (Electric), but wouldn't be so enthused about Red ones (Fire))

-For the most part, your leader should be doing most of the work. The rest of your team is mostly cleanup crew.

-Get acquainted with the in dungeon menus. There are going to be times when you should be tweaking your allies' AI pretty much every round.

Getting The Amazing Spider-Man from Gamefly soon and there's nothing on the wiki. Everything I've heard about it points to it being a competent Arkham City clone with the hero(es) and villains made Spider-Man-y, which sounds like it should be pretty straightforward. Even still, what should I know?

Metal Gear Acid 2 has a little paper cover for the front of the PSP with two little lenses. It has videos from some metal gear games that you can watch in 3D. Is cool.

It's a bad Arkham City clone. Spider-Man feels like he's made of glass, so they had to have a built in "escape" button since you have to run away if you get hit more than a couple times and combat doesn't flow nearly as smoothly as Batman's. The city is pretty lifeless, as anything that happens is totally scripted, and webswinging is a massive pain in the rear end now. Additionally, the game itself is painfully boring. I probably made it a third of the way through before it just wasn't worth bothering anymore.

Well first off, once you get the ability to build submarines, you can start building underwater industry and such.

You'll have an ark that is persistent throughout any of your games. If you load it up with perks and supplies in your continuous game, that stuff will be there when you fire up the campaign.

This Let's Play is pretty amazing and offers a ton of knowledge.

Wait until near the end and turn it into Glaceon. It'll be useless for the middle third of the game or so, but as soon as it becomes Glaceon, it will utterly dominate the last few battles all by itself.

To answer your questions in order

The best starter packs are the ones with Skullgreymon and Airdramon since outside of starting with them they can only be found in postgame and they can both be used in high end jogresses.

The one thing to remember about stats in this game is that they permanently increase on level up regardless of circumstance which is to say the best way to gain stats quick is to have your inactive digimon switch between two forms with low level
requirements while the ones doing the fighting gain levels in their higher forms to pick up moves.

The only thing I can think of is to check what a digimons new evolution line is before you save after jogress in case you aren't happy with it.

Can't really think of any big postgame mons that particularly stand out just pick them early on so you dont have to grind the necessary parts from the ground up later.

Look up your games passwords for some cool stuff.

The Floris mod is essentially the basic SP game but way more fleshed out and with a lot of the unfunness/tediousness removed or changed to be fun. It's what Warband should have been. It does require a bit more power out of your rig tho. The Native Expansion mod is similar.

Prophecy of Pendor and Brytenwalda are the most popular/polished total conversion mods, with new maps/factions/etc. So get one of those if you're tired of Calradia.

There's a bunch of other mods, but these four are some of the most polished/fun I think

Anyone got any advice for Orcs Must Die!? I just started playing it, and with the limited upgrade skulls you get I'm a little worried of upgrading the weaker traps that aren't all that useful for late game, so what's overpowered and worthy of skulls?
