It's totally unreasonable to expect a roller rink to do a better job of watching your kids than you do, however. I'm sure plenty of these parents let their kids guzzle coke/pepsi/mountain dew without a second thought.

As a kid who grew up from age 5-18 in Avon Lake and only moved out for college last year, that woman is the literal antichrist at our townhall/city council meetings. First of all, we have a deer population in the Avon/Avon Lake area that is literally double what is sustainable, and people hit those fuckers once a week at minimum. Those signs have literally saved more lives than I can count at home. As for the waste? Considering we can't pass a loving school levy at home, I'm thinking the teabaggers have indeed infiltrated and assumed dominance over my beloved city council much to my (and the mayor's) chagrin. She's been proposing that for the past 5 years, despite the fact that our deer population has exploded to the point where we're allowing bow hunting and police firearm training in our parks as a method of culling them down. Close. You'll find double to triple the caffeine in a lower volume energy drink, plus a bunch of poo poo (guarine, taurine) that may or may not be bad. I'm not trying to say it's the job of the roller rink to parent the kids but energy drinks are legit worse than soda in a few ways.

The caffeine is not actually worse unless they're drinking a lot in a single day (like let's say a case of it), plus the other stuff is about harmless. All of the harm they pose is exactly the same in soda. Most energy drinks are basically on the level of slightly more caffiene mountain dew.

I don't know why but the idea that police officers have to train to use their firearm on deer instead of targets is just hilarious to me. Based on this, the median energy drink contains about 120 mg of caffeine, compared to ~41 in the median soda, or ~52 in your example of (a can of) mountain dew. If you're concerned about your child's caffeine consumption, keeping them away from energy drinks seems reasonable.

That shows McDonald's coffee has more caffeine per ounce then most energy drinks.

Look if you're concerned about your child's caffeine consumption then you should be making them have no caffeine because the health effects of caffiene aren't very different between what's in a bottle of Coke versus a can of Monster vs a cup of coffee.

Kids don't generally drink coffee, either. Canada has health recommendations of no more than 45 mg/day for kids 4-6, 62.5 for 7-9, and 85 mg for kids 10-12; this would allow a can of coke or two, while most energy drinks would exceed the recommended limits substantially.

But yeah, given TheGreyGhost's followup anecdote this seems like a broken-clock-right-twice-a-day situation.

Depends on the area you are in. A lot of times the 'deer crossing' signs are put up after the 3rd or 4th hit in a specific area. Frickin deer just like crossing in certain parts for some reason.

The signs are mostly intended for people who are not regulars of an area. A deer crossing sign is meant to be posted in a stretch of road that has a particularly high rate of deer crossing, to alert people who are not local to pay extra attention in that area for that danger. Same with the falling rocks thing; because obviously most of the time you're driving somewhere that doesn't have that danger.

Tiffany Thompson got her wish: Demetrius Murphy met the “Right Person” and he will not be playing the Knockout Game any more. Ever.

A St. Louis homeowner shot Murphy dead late last week during a burglary. And a whole lot of people in St. Louis feel relieved, if not safer.
Ads by Google

Murphy was a member of a group that is credited with making the Knockout Game a St. Louis tradition, then a national pasttime.

The rules of the Knockout Game are simple: Begin with a bunch of black people. Anywhere from three to 30.

Find a white person, but an Asian will do. Alone is important. Older is better. Weak and defenseless even more so.

Without warning, punch that person in the face as hard as you can. You win if you score a Knockout.

If not, keep punching until your arms and legs get too tired to continue. Or the person dies.

You can play anywhere, but “vibrant and culturally mixed” neighborhoods are probably the best. That is where the victims are: Asians, “gays,” artists, yuppies, seniors , college students – people who won’t fight back.

Over the last two years, hundreds of people around the country have become victims. Some say over 100 in St. Louis alone. Some died. Others, like Murphy’s victim Matt Quain, suffered broken bones in his face and jaw.

Last week, four members of the national Championship Alabama football team were arrested after three played the game two times, and the fourth tried to use a debit card taken during the attacks.

Many of these cases of black mob violence are documented in the book “White Girl Bleed a Lot: The return racial violence and how the media ignore it.”

Murphy and his friends were arrested in November 2011 when police found a 13-year-old girl who witnessed the Knockout Game assault on Quain. The charges were dismissed after she failed to show up. The mayor of St. Louis said there was no doubt in his mind the witness was intimidated and too frightened to testify. The mother of the witness said the same several months later.

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Tank Man, also known as the Unknown Rebel, made his splash in history during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. You could say he used a form of free speech while standing in front of a column of military tanks. Was he verbally abusive to the tank? If not, he still made a statement his government frowned upon. No one knows how many died during the massacre, but we all know the Chinese government won. Would the outcome have been different if they had had the Second Amendment?

The Second Amendment isn’t about John Kerry putting on a hunting cap and saying “I’m pro-hunting.” Those old guys, our forefathers, were a pretty smart crew, and they understood what a totalitarian government was. Those wise men didn’t put the First and Second amendments at the number nine and 10 spots. They understood that free speech and the defense of that free speech were the foundation of a free society. Both amendments are symbiotic; you can’t have one without the other.
I don’t own an “assault” rifle and yet I don’t have any qualms about a law-abiding citizen owning this tool. When a citizen is getting assaulted, raped, robbed and tortured, is there a cop there ready to stop the crime?

I noticed the pro-lifers making a poignant comparison of the Sandy Hook massacre and the more than 50 million abortions performed since 1973. There is another comparison that should be made: Pro-lifers aren’t out there trying to outlaw the machines that are used to perform abortions. It appears pro-lifers understand that “someone” needs to pull the trigger on the machine.
Why are the nuts pulling the trigger? Is it the drugs (legal and illegal), the movies, games, the fame, the lack of parenting — could it be the lack of morality?

I recently heard on hate radio the one question asked that most have a tough time answering. Someone using their free speech asked the radio host why someone would need an assault rifle. His reply: The same reason my government needs one.

So, this man is saying that we don't need to outlaw guns, but something else. As he astutely points out, "'someone' needs needs to pull the trigger" on the gun in order for gun violence to occur. Without that "someone" factor, gun violence (and abortion I guess) would be non-existent. And since "someone" could literally be anyone (in the case of a gun), he proposes that we outlaw anyone from having a gun.

quote:

Feminism has met its goals and women are now equal with men as they should be. We are truly beginning to see feminism change our economy, college campuses and relationships. However, an overreaching has begun to happen through feminism whether or not they realize it.

Feminism has achieved what it was set out to do, and now that women are considered equal, ‘feminists’ want more. The movement is ruining modern relationships, and it’s bringing about the downfall of men. This can easily be seen by the numbers on a college campus and in the modern economy.

The fact of the matter is: the rules of survival have changed. No longer do people need to be risk takers, strong and resilient to survive in the world. So, in an economy that relies on communication and thinking over physical strength, women are excelling, according to the Institutions and Development Database.

This is because the job market is better suited for women, and the idea that men are more competitive than women has all but disappeared. Business-women have started to eclipse men in many companies for pay and position.

For the first time in 2010, women made up a majority of the workforce, and in 2011 women held 51.4 percent of all jobs in management or professional positions, while holding 46.6 percent of all jobs in the labor force. The argument that women simply can’t make it in today’s economy is a fallacy as the statistics show; it’s the women who are on top now and increasing their numbers as Fortune 500 CEOs in the past years.

College and relationships, however, have a greater impact on the immediate student body. According to Hanna Rosin and her article “The End of Men,” women earn 60 percent of all masters’ degrees, 42 percent of all MBAs and 60 percent of all bachelor’s degrees. Women have become equal in both the realms of education and economics, but feminists fail to acknowledge both of these statistics. So, they continue to push against the ‘evil man’ until they can push no further.

However, men also may not be adapting to an ever changing environment that we are now a part of. Markets that require typical male attributes were the greatest areas affected by the decrease of blue collar jobs during the recession. This has hurt men and the male egos. Still guys, we need to adapt, pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and claim our place on the pedestal next to women as equals.

The advancement of feminism past the point we’re at now poses dire consequences for women. Men have begun to adopt a habit where they are no longer being held to a higher standard, so they can slum it in college receiving C’s, while women would kill for an A. Don’t get me wrong; the blame shouldn’t be placed on women, as it isn’t their fault that men chose to only half-rear end it in school. The grade difference may come from women wanting to prove themselves in a “men’s” world, whereas men may become complacent.

The gender gap favoring females has gotten so bad that many colleges are trying to bring more men in than women to keep enrollment equal. The rolls have flipped. Men are now the minority in certain schools, and affirmative action may be swinging the other way.

Men have fallen behind by their own doing as well as overreaching feminism. Yet, women are the ones who are hurt the most when it comes to relationships. Feminism has disturbed the modern relationship and thrown equal relationships off balance. An equal relationship should be when two people work together to achieve a common outcome based on mutual desires. However, relationships today are based on who can get the last word in, who can outdo the other, essentially who comes out on top. Suzanne Venker the author of “The War on Men,” stated, “Feminism didn’t result in equality between the sexes – it resulted in mass confusion. Today, men and women have no idea who’s supposed to do what.”

This statement is best reflected in modern-day relationships, specifically between those of us who are in college, or leaving it for the real world. Instead of the ideal marriage feminists told you marriage would become, it has become nothing more than a last resort for many women who want to have kids but find themselves running out of time on their biological clock.

The fact is women have become so independent and focused on their work many have forgotten how to have a relationship based on mutual understanding and cooperation. Instead, it has become a competition, and feminism has turned relationships into a competition of equality as well.

According Suzanne Venker, men have it so easy when it comes to relationships. No longer are men required to buckle down and court a woman to receive some satisfaction for their ‘needs.’ Women, like men, are willing to have quick, easy relationships with little strings attached, or one night stands to satisfy them. In regards to equality, there is nothing wrong with this. However, this plays into the stereotypical male mentality – one which I disagree with and don’t think feminists should strive for. It is a mentality of promiscuity and conquests verses nurturing a relationship and respecting a woman for who she is.

The idea of equality can take on two forms. It can either be interchangeable, as when one perfect replica takes the place of the former. Or it can take the shape of equality of value, as in a relationship. In our case, valuing the other sex as equals because they can provide traits you can’t, and vice versa. This doesn’t mean that women need to do gender-specific activities or men need to do their gender-specific set as well in their lives or a relationship. All it means, is men and women in a relationship need to value one another equally and agree to their responsibilities to the relationship, together in mutual partnership.

In the end, women and men should be equal. Yet, being equal doesn’t mean pushing men off the platform. It means working together to create better relationships, a more lucrative economy for all, and encouraging stronger moral principles in our youth’s lives.

The notion that women should be protected, and have the door held open for them will always be something this writer places value on, which is not anti-feminist. It is in fact the opposite. A man who places value on a woman in a way such as this is anything but a pig, for we are not equal because we are interchangeable. We are equal because we value each other’s joys, sorrows and talents in a manner completely original to us, yet completely definitive of what a man and woman look for in each other.

Letting gays participate in Boy Scouts? Why not?

My initial reaction for letting gay men and boys join the Boy Scouts was a no-brainer. Of course they should be able to! I believe your sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well you fulfill the core values of being a Scout. These include citizenship, compassion, faith, honesty, respect and many others. In that case, gays have every right to participate.

It goes deeper though. Today’s society is all about being equal. We are not all equal nor are we the same. Sometimes there has to be limitations for the good of all of us. When I say this, I would like you to think: Would you allow your young daughter to go out in the woods with a male attracted to the opposite sex for a week when he has full responsibility over her? I am not accusing nor being stereotypical, but no parent in their right mind would ever take that chance.

Now let’s switch that situation around. A gay man goes out on a weeklong hiking trip in the Bob Marshall and in his hands is the sole responsibility of your son and several other young boys. It is just something to keep in mind when forming your opinion.

Prior to 1994, there were more than 2,000 abuse cases having to do with the Boy Scouts of America. That was almost 20 years ago. Imagine how many there are today.

It really is a sad thing because there are some gay men out there who would make amazing troop leaders and gay boys who would do great as Scouts. Unfortunately, there are a select few who may act inappropriately, and we just cannot have that happen.

The Scouting founder, Robert Baden-Powell, wrote in the very first Boy Scout handbook that “No man is much good unless he believes in God and obeys His laws.”

Boy Scouts of America was founded as a religious group, and homosexuality is not tolerated. The organization repeats that this is not a new policy and it is not meant to confront gays but rather to enforce long-standing guidelines. The Boy Scouts of America believes that gays are not proper role models of Scout oath and law. They do not criticize or condemn those who wish to go on with a homosexual lifestyle.

The 12th point of Scout law is to be reverent to God. Our society as a whole cannot determine whether homosexuality is approved in the eyes of God. It seems unfair and unrealistic to expect an organization like the Boy Scouts of America to determine something we as a society cannot.

In the diverse culture we live in today, we may initially believe that we want everyone regardless of their sexual orientation to be admitted freely to all organizations, however the Boy Scouts are a unique group dealing exclusively with impressionable young boys.

The risk of abuse upon this age group is already worrisome. If you wouldn’t want to endanger your own son or younger brother and expose them to that environment, then how could you feel that it would be acceptable for someone else’s son or brother to be put in that situation? It always boils down to risk versus benefits.

Gays are totally equal to straight people! Also they're pedophiles, not fit to be leaders, and homosexuality is a lifestyle.

It depends. Is there any reason for me to believe that he's attracted to her?

I guess there are no daddy-daughter camping trips in Homophobeland.

Oh, poo. Our country is getting better over time. Speaking for myself, a fiscal conservative, my family and all my friends we believe that people are people and color should not have anything to do with anything. Never ever, not once, did I consider my race when deciding on a place to work, a college to attend, a career or a place to call home, and neither should anyone else.

Hahaha! It doesn't get much more privilege blind than this. Let me guess, you didn't stop to consider your race because your'e loving white! Classic.

I feel sort of petty as this was written by an eighth grader (more accurately by an eighth grader's parents) but this has to be the most egregious example of talking out of both sides of one's mouth I have ever seen. This chick could show even Mitt Romney a thing or two about how it's done.

It really puzzles me how people can claim to have nothing against gay people and want them to have equality while in the same breath insinuating that they are all a bunch of disease-ridden child rapists. It's the homophobic version of "I totally not racist, but [insert incredibly racist comment]."

I alone can see through the media bias.

I'm also stupid on a scale that can only be measured in Reddits.

Huh, there is an argument I've never seen before. Particularly the part where it acknowledges that there are both a baby and bathwater here, then moving that they both need to be thrown out.

I assume that is the reason talking out of both sides of your mouth like this is rare. It actually weakens the argument. This person acknowledges that Most Gay People Are Fine then still argues they need to be discriminated against. It opens the reasoning up to a lot of pot-shots. Should men not be allowed women? Sometimes men rape women. Should non-parental adults not be allowed around children? Heck even parents abuse children sometimes. No adults at all maybe?

I think it's because they know that it's increasingly unacceptable to outright hate gay people these days so they've learned to cloak their bigotry in a veneer of politeness and tolerance. Of course that doesn't work because they're not very good at pretending not to hate gays.
