If you like Nocturno Culto's voice, I'll throw Sarke in there as well. Anyone listen to the new Koldbrann yet? It's pretty drat good.

Why did I forget to mention Absu? Anyway Rotting Christ have posted youtube links for every song off the new album on their facebook page for anyone interested. I can't link to the post itself, and I don't think it's in any sort of playlist, but they've promoted the post, meaning that it is at the top of the page and should be easy to find.

I hope they can maintain the quality now that Shrapnel is no longer in the band, but then, I don't actually know who was writing most of the riffs. I'm hoping to see some new material before the end of the year. Also, I'm listening to Absu again and they rule, definitely a band I need to listen to more. NWN apparently have the test press for the new Antediluvian. Not long now...

Shrapnel wrote the music for that song. Early material was mostly KK, later stuff sees more and more influence from Shrapnel (more songs on albums and contributing more solos), and Defiance was all Shrapnel and Matt Razor, with KK only providing lyrics. Keith is still more than capable of writing killer riffs, and Matt is an excellent guitarist in his own right (check the Razor of Occam material). Ian's distinctive soloing will soon be heard on Nocturnal Graves' new release.

Looks like I'm gonna have to check out Nocturnal Graves.

Yesterday it was cold, rainy and overall a lovely dreary day. I decided to listen to Darkthrone. Goddamn Under a Funeral Moon was fantastic, going to listen to Transilvanian Hunger later in the week. I also listened to The Underground Resistance, and loved it too. It's hysterical to me that Darkthrone released three albums that are apparently cornerstones of the black metal genre, then spent the next 15 years trying not to sound anything like them. Resistance is a drat good album, and Leave No Cross Unturned is a sprawling epic of a song that sounds like a black metal Iron Maiden. It's great that there is a band like Darkthrone that clearly has a sense of humor about what they are doing, because I get the feeling alot of these bands take it way too seriously. Varg, looking at you here.

I haven't, but I listen to a fair amount of ambient/atmospheric black metal so I'm aware that 15 minutes blocks of wind/forest/spooky noises are a thing. Are any of his other releases worth checking out? I like Darkspace and Zhaaral's Sun of the Blind side project. bij fucked around with this message at 17:22 on Feb 28, 2013 |

Das Tor is absolutely fantastic. I really wasn't expecting a huge amount from this release for whatever reason (I'm a little hit-and-miss on PDH as a whole) but I'd rank this up there with Wintherr's best.

I know everyone refers to Darkthrones big 3 albums - but it's always bugged me that Panzerfaust isnt included to make it a big 4. Its better then Under A Funeral Moon even! Maybe because it was released on Moonfog instead of Peaceville.

Underground Resistance sucks pretty bad, really. Fenriz gets a pass on doing this stuff from me. He's pretty clearly not inspired like he was 20 years ago (ditto Nocturno), but he's just a sad, proud metal head that didn't give up and become a whore. He can't be anything but Fenriz and that's ok. Listen to the record once and shelve it/delete it. No biggie.

Yeah, caught that show on Friday, it was a good show. A bit short but they took the stage at like midnight. The set I caught in October (I think) was a bit longer. Plus the turnout here was abysmal. Inquisition is pretty cool but funny as heck with the 80s robot voice vocals.

A local band also set the sound guy's hair on fire, so that was pretty fun.
