No, I meant that using the Vita tag for the PS Store thread was supposed to be a humorous jab implying that the Store is only for the Vita now. I wasn't complaining that Sony gives the Vita more attention, but reading my sentence again I completely see that it looks like that.

but there was a bunch of new stuff that came for the Vita store during that time. I'll switch it back to PS3 in the next thread next month.

Also, the download version of Tomb Raider doesn't have the strict DRM after all. The description in the store was edited to reflect that and axleblaze confirmed in the PlayStation Store thread that there was no need to log in to PSN before playing the game.

No, you're right and I guess I should have expanded on that more. They've most likely sold a majority of the PS3s they're going to sell so far (which is true if you look at PS1/PS2 sales at the same point in their lives) so it makes sense that they're pushing the Vita hard with free games considering how they want to integrate it into new hardware coming this fall.

That's good to know. I remember trying the demo and it had similar issues (but no audio problems interestingly) so I thought it might be fixed in the full game.

I'd advise anybody first playing Spec Ops thanks to PS+ to just go in blind and play through it before talking/asking about it online. Yeah, there are the big "twist" moments, but there are plenty of little things that get warped over the course of the game, too, and it all adds up to an interesting experience. You can get through the campaign in 6-8 hours on any difficulty besides FUBAR, so it's not a huge time investment.

That said, I'm finally going for my FUBAR run and the game gets really frustrating on that difficulty. Mainly because you can die so quickly and the game loads kinda slowly, around 10 seconds after each death. I haven't played in a couple of months and forgot most of the levels, so figuring out what to do in each situation is tedious when I'm looking at the load screen more than I'm playing. I wouldn't be trying if I didn't enjoy the experience of playing the game so much (which is different than enjoying playing the game, but I'll save all that for the Spec Ops thread).

Yeah, honestly, I did it in 4 hours on Easy Mode (Trophy They Live (the first one) earned at 10:31, and I got the ending trophy at 2:35) and basically did it on one sitting and it was just... Wow.

I'm playing Spec Ops on Suicide Mission since, well, it said it's for veterans and I've played my fair share of third person shooters. Though I honestly thought Spec Ops was a FPS up until I loaded it up and was in game. It does seem like it's going to be a quick romp, I played 2 hours last night, 3 or so today and apparently I'm already half way through the game. I'm pretty sure if I was playing on normal I'd actually be right near the end already.

It's surprisingly fun though, considering it's kind of rough around the edges compared to the last few third person shooters I've played. It's neat having allies you can actually command in a game like this. Especially compared to stuff like Uncharted where it seems Sully/Elena/Chloe/etc never do any real damage while you have to do all the work. :allears:

I finished the game, killed the final patrol, and I guess it was worth it. The Wikipedia entry claims that they deliberately made the shooting not fun as part of the meta-plot. I guess they succeeded there? I just wanted every combat encounter to be over.

edit: regarding telling my teammates to kill people, I never ran into a situation where they could kill an enemy faster or more easily than me, so what was the point? Any enemy I mark for them is just gonna be left alive for me to kill once all the other enemies in that wave are dead.

Regarding the $10 PSN vouchers (I can't remember if it's this thread or in general discussion), but I think it may be part of the spend $50 and get $10 credit thing going on right now. Can anybody that's got the voucher confirm? I think they started the program the last few days of February...

Also, dunno if anybody here is a fan of The Show, but I just grabbed the digital version. Game is pretty good so far, seems like a decent update to my last copy (The Show 10). They've added some interesting online and social features like Twitter feeds from MLB players/teams and the ability to track your Road to the Show character against other player's progress. Just be prepared for the 30GB download if you buy it through PSN... I get a decent bit of bandwidth through my wired PS3, but good lord is 30GB a lot of data to transfer around...

So the new Tomb Raider is pretty god damned amazing. It really is Uncharted-ish as hell but in some ways it's better. On the one hand it doesn't really have the controlled, movie like set pieces of Uncharted. It tries and often succeeds but it doesn't quite reach that level. However, the reason it can't really pull these off is because the game give you considerably more freedom than Uncharted. There are often multiple ways through a situation and often you can completely fumble what the developers wanted to happen and still squeak by. I mean even in things like basic platforming segment they often will put in more than one way to navigate it. Like I just did a sequence where I was running through some collapsing building on a cliffside and there was distinctly multiple paths that could be taken through the environment as it was collapsing. It's still not total freedom but it does alot to make you feel like you're actively playing a game rather than playing through a cutscene.

I also really do like the combat. You can take cover and it does help but cover is also not 100% and should not be relied on. Enemies can taken down quickly and satisfyingly and where you hit them does matter and will often cripple them and effect how they act. There's something immensely satisfying about putting an arrow through someone's leg and crippling them and after they fall to the ground running up to them and bashing their head in with a rock.

Also, the game is gorgeous on all fronts with the fire in particular looking amazing (it's nice to see fire that looks this good in a game that isn't Alone in the Dark). The story so far seems really solid with Lara in particular being a pretty great character.

It's also sharable, so if that's your thing $30 for this is insane.

This is pretty much exactly the game I wanted it to be and it's just about everything I want in this type of game.

Like 40% linear platforming, 40% combat, 20% searching for collectibles/doing minor puzzles. It's a very linear experience, it ain't Metroidvania at all, but it's good at what it does. You can go back to previous areas but mostly via teleportation.

It's closer to Arkham Asylum than a full blown Metroidvania. Like Arkham you have a pretty big environment to explore at your leisure but outside of side stuff there's a very linear path through it all. It feels a bit more linear than Arkham because in that the open area lets you pass by all the places you'll be going, but it's really about the same.

It's both thrilling and terrifying.
Is anyone excited for God of War: Ascension? I've been a fan of the series through the first 3 games, but for some reason haven't really been hyped for this one. That may be due to my relative disappointment with GoW 3, which felt very paint-by-numbers for me for long stretches of it.

Then there's the matter of possible controversy that may arise from the new installment. Essentially, there's a sequence in the game where after defeating a Fury boss, you're treated to a graphically violent cutscene of Kratos stomping a woman's face in, followed by the awarded trophy "Bros Before Hos". The sequence soured Adam enough that it seems like his final review score definitely suffered because if it.

I have to admit, I had a similar reaction to a sequence in God of War 3 really felt misogynistic and soured me to the game beyond that point. The part where Kratos essentially chains an innocent woman to a gear to hold a door open, and you hear her screaming and begging for her life as he steps through the door, followed by the crunch of her getting pulled into the gears and killed.

I know stuff like this has always been par for the course for the franchise, but I feel like the games were always walking a fine tonal line with that kind of material, and on the occasions when they cross that line, it can really turn people off.
