Are there, like, any journalists left in Britain now? Kinda surprising that there isn't room to employ Brown Moses somewhere. :p

A tiny and mostly symbolic detail, but today BSkyB officially bought back the shares News Corp bought almost three years ago which kicked off the takeover bid, meaning it is officially over: http://www.4-traders.com/BRITISH-SKY-BROADCASTING-9590190/news/British-Sky-Broadcasting-Group-plc-Share-Buyback-16369542/ (News Corp still own 39.1% of BSkyB, and made a pretty tasty profit - almost half a million pounds - on the buyback because the price is now almost as high as it got at the height of the takeover bid.)

Looks like another police officer is going down via Danny Shawquote:Alan Tierney, a former Surrey police constable, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to two offences of misconduct in a public office. Not good news for the Sun journalist(s) involved. [edit] There's more, could be a busy morning with Coulson, Brooks, et al appearing later, especially if the Datapool 3 emails have been ruled submissable as many people now suspect (which means News Corp is hosed) quote:Ex prison worker Richard Trunkfield pleads guilty to passing info to the Sun about a high profile prisoner Brown Moses fucked around with this message at 10:52 on Mar 8, 2013 |

I wonder if all the cases will be uses as precedent to prosecute Police whistleblowers in the future. As an aside, I also find the Eye's stance on the entire affair rather interesting and orthogonal to the opinion in this thread. They bewailed the back door addition of the Leveson recommendations which got a big shout out in the thread. With the number of Politicians they embarrass they are rather worried about statutory regulations.

So who is given then chance for leniency more, the police or the reporters, or is the sentencing equally harsh? Is the prosecution going after the press and giving the charged police officers a chance to cooperate or vice versa? I wold expect an institutional bias in favor of the corrupt police, unless there is a concerted effort that they be 'made an example'.

Well the first conviction was pretty harsh, so I expect more of the same. All these guilty pleas aren't good for News Corp as now the journalists involved have to explain how they can be innocent while the person the paid off is guilty. It's all very bad news for News Corp.

Christ, it's all go this morning, a police officer is being charged for accepting cash from the Sun for information. It should also be noted the Mirror journalists charged today are all editors or deputy editors. All from the Piers Morgan era as well, so bad news for him. DC is doing the same thing he did with the voting referendum. Force a vote on an bill no-one wants. It's a win win situation for him, either they get the water-downed bill through and the media is saved, or they reject it and the media is saved...precious donation money...

MPs and peers are due on Monday to debate legal changes designed to tighten media self-regulation and ensure it is placed on a permanent basis. Labour and the Lib Dems are hoping to defeat the Conservatives with their proposals to introduce a law to strengthen the power of a watchdog to audit the work of a reformed Press Complaints Commission. This is hilarious.

Its going to be quite interesting to see how this vote turns out. If the Tories have any amount of sense they'll vote for the proposals rather than follow blindly behind Cameron. If the vote fails its going to be an utter disaster. How fun!
