I thought using a Neon coilpack in an Impreza was the limit of Subaru-Neon crossover, but this takes the cake.

Anyone ever heard of BackDraft Racing ? They're a A/C Cobra kit car maker who does rolling chassis and you supply the motor and trans.
The suspension and rear diff is from an M3 as well as most of the running gear. They are stretched 2" from the original dimensions to allow for taller drivers.

Common engines are carb or fuel injected aluminium 427's, or the Ford 5.0 Coyote motor.

The A/C 427 Cobra is my all time favourite car. The stigma of it, from the Bill Cosby story where he gave it back after taking it around the block, to all the dead owners and test pilots. Below is a video of a Backdraft replica doing acceleration runs. Followed by a couple pictures of the replica and "black" edition (larger wheels, less chrome, more modern cockpit)

Hello 5.0 !

Anyways, I might be on the market for one, but getting completed kits into Canada is impossible to do legally. Transport Canada allows you to build your own from scratch, and parts found within Canada, but you aren't allowed to purchase a rolling kit engineered at a shop, and import it, because Safety. Sometimes I hate this loving country.

Problem is I really don't like the Factory Five cars. I've already owned a 2600lb Fox Mustang tin can race car. Part of the draw for the Backdraft cars is the lack of a solid axle, and the overall refinement of the m3 setup versus the fox mustang setup.

This one does catch my eye though: http://www.westerncanadacobras.com/cars-for-sale-2/ffr-mk-iii-cobra-for-sale-with-ultra-rare-tan-leather-interior-and-matching-soft-top

The problem is, $49k gets you into a brand new Backdraft turnkey.

I don't think having an M3 IRS vs a Cobra IRS (which FF roadsters do support) is going to magically take away from the tin can nature of the body. That depends entirely on build quality. If Backdraft is assembling themselves in house, then they'll want to rush them out to preserve margins. The builds in their gallery don't suggest to me that they'd be less rattly. The other crazy thing is how wide that trans tunnel is:

Looks like the pedals might be offset some.

E: It's my friend's project. Originally he gutted the Neon and swapped in the drivetrain from an old nonturbo Impreza. Custom fabbed mounts all around as well as a custom driveshaft tunnel to make the Subaru bits fit. He drive it like that for quite some time, then came across some STi bits. Been a while since I last heard the specs, but it's a 2.3L destroked boxer with low compression (in the 7:1 range) and running about 20psi on...stock STi turbo? I'll have to ask, haha.

Not sure I'd use pipe, HREW at least and preferably DOM, but yeah, with some welding skill and a quality bender it's not bad at all.

Building a bender costs a few hundred, but borrowing one from your buddy costs a 30-rack for the garage fridge.

Even 1.75x0.120 DOM can be had for as little as 3-3.50/ft if you order enough (I see a cage in that pic...)

Nope, not at all :shobon:. I was told by the LSJ community that it's expensive as gently caress to do RWD conversions on FWD cars since they're not engineered to support the power/torque on the rear of the frame. This made sense to my ignorant mind so I never really looked much more into it

The tin can part not so much. It's just that I've spent a lot of time working on Fox Mustangs. I know how they handle and how they feel. The skiddish feeling of the rear on uneven pavement. Also being 6'2" and 220lbs, I'm not sure I would be very comfortable in a factory Five.

I have driven some IRS Mustang Cobras though, and the rear always felt good compared to the solid axle. Even in a straight line on street tires the IRS seems to have better traction. Perhaps thats something I can look into.

We're in the business of extending man's senses.
I'm fairly sure I saw a Lamborghini Reventón in Santa Clara today. I didn't get a good look at it because we passed it quickly, but my dad got a better look and says the Reventón rear matches what he saw.

The reason we passed it quickly was because it was broken down in the middle of the street with its flashers on. :downs:

Edit: I think it was actually a Gallardo, looking at more photos.

You hang about in AI where there's half a dozen threads where the poster is doing projects that make the skills required for a backyard RWD conversion look like a stroll in the park. I could name a dozen posters who could pull off the required RWD conversion work and none of them would need to spend big money.

I think in all seriousness, you need to be watching a lot more threads to get an idea what can and cant be done to a car in a cramped garage.

A few pics here from Doha, in the desert. The slip-road alongside one of the local malls is always lined with cars for sale, trucks, trailers (there was a trailer tent there this week. Who uses a trailer tent in the desert?) And I thought I saw something interesting parked up for sale...

This is a BMW 3.0 CS, early 70s. Lovely, lovely. Poor condition, and hasn't been registered recently, so it would be a money pit, I'm sure. But so pretty.

There were a couple of other bits and bobs, too. Mad quad.

Old Caddy.

Mental sand buggy. Look at those rear tyres.

Nice new Silverado next to something interesting in blue?

Yup, a 4-door Chevy Nova. Wonder what the engine is?

And really, who would buy this? A highly tuned rally rep in a colour that just screams 'I have poor impulse control!'

OK, maybe not poor, but not great. The driver's window wouldn't close, and that meant the the interior was pretty mucky. The shut-lines were very inconsistent, and made me think that it'd had a few bumps and bashes. Those are non-standard wheels, I think, although they are BMW. Also, the guy was selling it on the side of a busy road - it's not a trailer queen!

When I first came to Doha years ago, my American friend ran an early Porsche 928 manual. Metallic brown, lovely honey velour upholstery. It spent more time of the road than on, but I regret not buying it from him when he left. Maybe I should call the BMW owner up, see what he wants for it...

Honestly I'm not sure! He's one of those people that is constantly rotating between 3-7 projects, so it's hard to get a good idea of actual hours. Him and our mutual friends were/are really big into 1st-gen Neons (ACRs, NYGs, etc. - one of them is even a mod at .org) so they always had roughly 3 Neons in a disassembled state at the shop. The donor Impreza was a Craigslist find and had major body damage but an intact drivetrain. The wheelbase was surprisingly similar, I don't think the driveshaft has been modified at all. He later found a bugeye WRX wagon in the same condition as the previous Impreza, and pulled that running gear. After that point I stopped hanging around at his shop far less frequently because I moved almost a half hour further away. IIRC they blew the WRX engine, and managed to find some STi running bits and put those in, then broke something in that so we now have the weird 2.3L currently.
