Thanks guys, SA never fails to come through for me  I'm already familiar with Arvo Part, I like many of his works, although I find sometimes they're a bit screechy. That's a problem I've run into myself. The only other artist I'd heard of was Steven Roach, so I appreciate so many suggestions! Those will keep me busy, especially with the backlog I already have. Would it be alright if I continued to post my songs? I don't know how much of an audience they would find, but I like to share things that make me happy. I only have a few more that I think are fit for mass consumption anyway, so I'm not about to clog the thread up.

Here's a specific suggestion for Amp, because I just now checked and sure enough it's on Spotify! The album Perception. If you search by artist, you have to scroll very far down but trust me, it's there. For some reason, they consider it a "single" (it's four 20-odd minute tracks). Also, holy poo poo Amp have a lot more material than I thought they did. edit: Oh God I guess that's because some lovely Christian band stole the name Amp. Basically its a youtube repository with a fancy javascript player I am working on. It auto plays videos at full screen and the gui fades out after idling, so you can enjoy the video. It 'liberates' mp3's by downloading the *.flv and extracting the mp3 to make it available. It lets you play continuously based on categories tagged by the small group who use it. if you sign up (no real email needed), you can down vote to permanently skip the video.

One of my favourite ambient records of the past few years is 'Returnal' by Oneohtrix Point Never. Daniel Lopatin (OPN) creates intricate soundscapes by layering 'cheesy' 80s synthesizers and creates something quite transcendent. Black metal artists create some incredible ambient works. This one is by Horseback, though I guess calling them black metal isn't true in the strictest sense. Ambient music, I love it so much. Especially the more droney and minimal stuff. One artist that hasn't been mentioned here as far as I can see is Stephan Mathieu. He seems to be most well known for his digital manipulations of ancient and lo-fi recordings. A great way to start, is to check out Radioland, where he processed shortwave radio signals. He also does a lot of collaborations, including a nice album of Smog/Bill Callahan drone covers together with vocalist Sylvain Chauveau.Here's an example. In addition, when performing live, he does some very interesting things with ebows and virginals (sort of like a harpsichord). Also, I coordinate a weekly radioshow on drone, ambient & minimalism on some obscure belgian radio station (EDIT: it's in dutch though). Sometimes we also upload our episodes on mixcloud. And finally, here is my valentines drone & ambient mix I did recently (also broadcast on the same show!)

Pardon me for jumping in here, but it seems no one mentioned this favorite of mind and I'd like to contribute. Blue Mars https://bluemars.org Free internet radio with a couple of ambient/chillout like tracks. I personally enjoy Cryosleep when I'm about to sleep or leave it on at a low volume when I sleep. Cryosleep has no drumbeats in it (usually a lot of soft pad sounds and other typical ambient stuff). If this is already commonly known thing, feel free to ignore me.

I've been interested in ambient music for years, but it's only now that I've actually taken time to sit down and listen to it (or to any music for that matter - I've mostly listened to music browsing the net or in general doing something else, now I take time to simply listen to it). This thread seems like a goldmine for finding new bands. Carbon Based Lifeforms has been very pleasant. I didn't search thoroughly, but I got the impression that Klaus Schultze wasn't mentioned in the thread. Anyway, that's the kind of music I like and what kind of ambient I'd like to find. "Cosmic" would be a pretty good adjective. Something that paints images of vast distances of space in one's mind - or abysses of the ocean. Can anyone recommend something like that or something similar to that Schulze's track?

If you like Carbon Based Lifeforms, then you'll pretty much automatically like anything by Solar Fields. Benn Jordan's Pale Blue Dot is a lovely tribute album to Carl Sagan that musically chronicles a trip from Earth into space and back. The middle ambient section gives a great impression of the vacuum, silence and loneliness of deep space. Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks was written for a feature length documentary on the Moon landing, and is appropriately cosmic. Includes the track 'An Ending (Ascent)' which you've no doubt heard many times, even if you didn't realise it. Sublime piece of music. Also, drone never goes amiss when contemplating the expanses of space and time - Stars of the Lid are quite good for this kind of thing. This forum's very own Aetherius is great, and (goon) Conelrad's ambient albums Five Automatic Landings and Community Shelter Planning, though not explicitly about space, are also pretty great.
