It makes me happy to see so many of my favorite ambient artists already listed in this thread. I'm a huge fan of Eno, Aphex, Tycho, Helios/Goldmund, Seefeel, etc. Such great music :unsmith:

I was hoping that you all might be able to give me suggestions on where to find music like what I've made. Please forgive me for posting something of my own and don't think I'm trying to pimp my work, I honestly just have a hard time finding stuff like it. They're very long which is part of the issue, but I like having a slow background noise most of the day. Great for walking, taking the bus/subway, doing your daily chores, that sort of thing. I am probably in the minority of liking songs as slow as these, but I find them to be profoundly relaxing, and they help me when I feel blue.

Those two are, to me, probably the most beautiful and some of my most favored. I'm not sure they really fit but I can't see any other genre.

nice works, MadBimber! I particularly like the first piece, well done. you'll be pleased to know that there are many, many artists making the kind of music you make, which falls into the "ambient drone" sub-genre of ambient music. stars of the lid, william basinski, tim hecker, steve roach, robert rich, and thomas köner would all be good places to start. since your second piece is very choral in nature, you should also check out minimalist composers like Arvo Pärt.

Thanks guys, SA never fails to come through for me :)
I'm already familiar with Arvo Part, I like many of his works, although I find sometimes they're a bit screechy. That's a problem I've run into myself. The only other artist I'd heard of was Steven Roach, so I appreciate so many suggestions! Those will keep me busy, especially with the backlog I already have.

Would it be alright if I continued to post my songs? I don't know how much of an audience they would find, but I like to share things that make me happy. I only have a few more that I think are fit for mass consumption anyway, so I'm not about to clog the thread up.

Here's a specific suggestion for Amp, because I just now checked and sure enough it's on Spotify!

The album Perception. If you search by artist, you have to scroll very far down but trust me, it's there. For some reason, they consider it a "single" (it's four 20-odd minute tracks).

Also, holy poo poo Amp have a lot more material than I thought they did.

edit: Oh God I guess that's because some lovely Christian band stole the name Amp. FUCKERS.

They're also awesome people. Here's how awesome they were: back in '03 I helped run a pirate radio station, and on a whim I emailed Kranky and said "Yo, uh, I'm the only DJ at this station that would play your stuff, but I would play the almighty gently caress out of it, if you want to send promos here's my home address" and they did! I mean, I'm sure they did a quick Google to see that the station actually existed, but you know, still. I remember they sent me the first Out Hud album with a sticker on it that said "the first Kranky album aimed not only at your brain, but at your rear end".

(And drat it's a good album, too. STREET DAD. You may know the guys in Out Hud from their other, more popular, worse band !!!)

M. Gira was a bro, too, when he sent us the first Devendra Banhart album, he sent a two-page long hand-written letter about how great it was.

I'm sure you probably freaked out when you got the promos, hah. That's awesome. I've talked to a few Kranky artists at shows before and they seemed really happy being on the label, they get quite a bit of freedom with things (for example they're not obligated to tour a certain amount). I also like that Kranky does a nice job with packaging orders.

This is pretty great, it reminds me of a slow Flying Lotus, or maybe slow Madlib.

I've got one more for you guys, from when I first started. It is very different from the two pieces I linked earlier, but still the same style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih_xoN_JHjw

Since it is earlier, I had a problem with songs getting a little "noisy" and it gets rougher after about the 50~ minute mark. I love it though, it's the song that convinced me that I needed to do less drugs. I was pretty out when I heard this the first time, and it felt like some god struck me across oceans of space and time to say "dude chill out". And so I did.

It 'liberates' mp3's by downloading the *.flv and extracting the mp3 to make it available. It lets you play continuously based on categories tagged by the small group who use it. if you sign up (no real email needed), you can down vote to permanently skip the video.

Oh my, I listened to some of this guy yesterday, and Empty Pools is beautiful. The choice of instruments perfectly creates a sense of paradise, with soft, melodic playing and natural found sounds of the sea and children playing, screaming. However, the way in which they are played, with the guitar sounding so desolate and empty, the bass so dread filled, that you can't help but feel complete dissociation listening to it. What started sounding as the sound of playing, soon started to sound like screams and cries of fear, to me.

I often go into a daze, thinking of a perfect image to go with a song, or how I would use it were I a filmmaker, and all I could think of was the terror of being in a tropical, foreign (to me) land, just before a tsunami is due to strike, it is just so sad sounding. Maybe that is just my interpretation of the track though.

:goonsay:

Essentially, a brilliant ambient track which everyone should hear. Just ignore the amateur, unofficial made video. You know it is a Youtube comment when it is so, so wrong. "this video is perfect" my rear end, it capture the joy, but not the beauty.

One of my favourite ambient records of the past few years is 'Returnal' by Oneohtrix Point Never. Daniel Lopatin (OPN) creates intricate soundscapes by layering 'cheesy' 80s synthesizers and creates something quite transcendent.

Another suggestion for those looking to buy their music is http://boomkat.com/. They've got an outstanding selection of DRM-free independent electronic music in FLAC or MP3 form. Once you buy something it gets added to your library so that you can re-download as required.

Black metal artists create some incredible ambient works. This one is by Horseback, though I guess calling them black metal isn't true in the strictest sense. Very hypnotic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dySTrpOO7Y

Vinterriket is a one-man black metal project that creates very sparse landscape portraits when he's not hammering away with some blast beats from a drum machine. I'm much more of a fan of his former sound.

Ambient music, I love it so much. Especially the more droney and minimal stuff.
One artist that hasn't been mentioned here as far as I can see is Stephan Mathieu.
He seems to be most well known for his digital manipulations of ancient and lo-fi recordings. A great way to start, is to check out Radioland, where he processed shortwave radio signals.
He also does a lot of collaborations, including a nice album of Smog/Bill Callahan drone covers together with vocalist Sylvain Chauveau. Here's an example. In addition, when performing live, he does some very interesting things with ebows and virginals (sort of like a harpsichord).

Also, I coordinate a weekly radioshow on drone, ambient & minimalism on some obscure belgian radio station (EDIT: it's in dutch though). Sometimes we also upload our episodes on mixcloud.

And finally, here is my valentines drone & ambient mix I did recently (also broadcast on the same show!)

I've been interested in ambient music for years, but it's only now that I've actually taken time to sit down and listen to it (or to any music for that matter - I've mostly listened to music browsing the net or in general doing something else, now I take time to simply listen to it). This thread seems like a goldmine for finding new bands. Carbon Based Lifeforms has been very pleasant.

I didn't search thoroughly, but I got the impression that Klaus Schultze wasn't mentioned in the thread. I like the album Irrlicht a lot, here's the first track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHTaCVTqolA

Is it even ambient? Schulze's a pretty well known name, so I'm surprised he wasn't mentioned here. Anyway, that's the kind of music I like and what kind of ambient I'd like to find. "Cosmic" would be a pretty good adjective. Something that paints images of vast distances of space in one's mind - or abysses of the ocean. Can anyone recommend something like that or something similar to that Schulze's track?

Barry Foster
Dec 24, 2007

What is going wrong with that one (face is longer than it should be)
If you like Carbon Based Lifeforms, then you'll pretty much automatically like anything by Solar Fields.

Benn Jordan's Pale Blue Dot is a lovely tribute album to Carl Sagan that musically chronicles a trip from Earth into space and back. The middle ambient section gives a great impression of the vacuum, silence and loneliness of deep space.

Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks was written for a feature length documentary on the Moon landing, and is appropriately cosmic. Includes the track 'An Ending (Ascent)' which you've no doubt heard many times, even if you didn't realise it. Sublime piece of music.

Also, drone never goes amiss when contemplating the expanses of space and time - Stars of the Lid are quite good for this kind of thing. This forum's very own Aetherius is great, and (goon) Conelrad's ambient albums Five Automatic Landings and Community Shelter Planning, though not explicitly about space, are also pretty great.
