We're going to play the Mario games. Like, all of them. Mario is the best selling video game franchise of all time, selling over 200 million games worldwide. He is a plumber. You know this. He also wears red, has a thing for chicks outside his socioeconomic class, and has a less successful, less respected fraternal twin brother. You know these as well. What you might not know is that in 31 years between 1981 and 2012 the Mario character was linked to over 220 games, and the franchise itself contained 188 releases. We can't play through all of these games, but we can play through the ones that count and show you pretty close to everything else. I must be honest with you, though, dear viewers. This will kill us. We will cross the threshold of that 31st anniversary on our hands and knees. And then we will die. 10/15/16 Mario Golf (1999) Part 1/1 (LP pt.127) [Youtube] This will work in basically the same way as last time. Bolded titles denote the games we will play to completion. Everything else will be graced by our game-playing presence for about 20-60 minutes and these "side games" typically won't be added to the list until the video is posted because I'm mysterious. The general rule for side games is to play until it stops being fun or, barring any hope of fun, just until we've "seen enough." Please don't ask what we're going to play. We won't tell you. I'm hyped for this thread and I can't wait to see how long the side game list gets. Mario's been in more games than anyone else ever and I'm hoping for triple digits. Let's go nuts.

I'm incredibly excited for this, especially when we see some of the more obscure side games and the late NES and the SNES era. God speed and try not to kill yourselves because this is a bigger undertaking than 20 years of Sonic! Any reason that at least the US version of Super Mario Bros. 2 won't be played to completion? Seems odd that 1 and 3 will, but 2 won't. Anyway, I really should check this out (and the previous Sonic thread); been awhile since I last sat down and enjoyed watching and/or playing some Mario games.

Glad to see this is finally up. I loved the Sonic playthrough, and I'm definitely looking forward to see you two do another marathon of this style. Just out of curiosity, for the 3D games in particular, are you planning on going for 100% completion or just enough to get to the end?

All the talk of Wreck-It Ralph and King of Kong made me want to share this intersection. Disney made a fictional documentary to go along with their fictional video game but decided not to include it on the home release. As a comedy short the characters are more ridiculous and more ridiculed than the actual Kong people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXdTecBRYq4

Regarding Gunpei Yokoi, he made the Ultra Hand, the first of Nintendo's toy products which moved them away from just hanafuda cards. Though I think he had also made the Game and Watch by the time he taught Miyamoto everything about game design. Basically Gunpei Yokoi is the reason for all of Nintendo's success and he's a goddamn amazing man.

I think the reason the flame on 75M never went down was because you started riding the elevator up to the top, then going to the left for the parasol. If you just climb the ladders you get to the parasol before the flame's made it to the top. It looks like he just follows you up and down the ladders. Also everyone should watch King of Kong, I saw it with people who couldn't care less about video games and they loved it. It's legitimately good, not a "so bad it's good" thing.

Donkey Kong...I played the hell out of that back in the day. Even as a little kid I thought that dying when Mario goes even a tiny bit lower than where his jump started was bullshit. EDIT: Just got to the end of the video and heard you talk about the Virtual Boy. As one of, apparently, very few(?) people who has actually played a Virtual Boy (got a week rental on one when it came out), I can say a bit about it. The only Mario game on it was a Mario Tennis game that was pretty drat good and foreshadowed the more famous Mario Tennis for the N64. The more famous game with Nintendo characters was Wario Land, which was pretty good for what it was. The game you mention was not a Star Fox game, but a game that was basically Star Fox SNES with the serial numbers filed off. It was pretty terrible because of the whole two colors and wireframes issue: the walls were not solid objects, but wireframes (the same red void with black lines) so it was way too easy to accidentally fly into walls. The Virtual Boy legitimately hurt my eyes, and the whole "You can't see the controller while you use it" thing is very inconvenient when you're still in the phase where you're trying to learn a game's controls. Also, not being able to see anything but the game leaves you feeling somewhat vulnerable: you have a giant loving visor on and can't tell if someone's walking up to you. Worst thing about the Virtual Boy was that it was allegedly "portable," which is the biggest bullshit ever. It was actually pretty heavy. EDIT: I forgot, Mario Tennis wasn't the only one, there was also a remake of the old Mario Bros arcade game named Mario Clash. Patter Song fucked around with this message at 05:00 on Mar 30, 2013 |
