Is that the Laffer Curve? This is Sturla Jónsson, head of the political party "Sturla Jónsson" currently trying to win a seat in parliament. I sort of want his party to succeed, only for there to later be a power struggle so I could read about a conflict between Sturla Jónsson and whoever over the reins of Sturla Jónsson, the party.

This is the Alma Rose (top) and the Alma King (bottom), two of the best specimens of rhodochrosite ever mined from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. They were purchased by Richard and Helen Rice for an undisclosed price that likely topped $1,000,000 US, the first mineral specimens to ever reach that price. The Alma King was then sold to the Coors Brewing Company for at least that price, then loaned to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in Colorado. The Alma Rose can be seen at the Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals in Hillsboro, Oregon. Margret Thatcher posted:"So, you'll find that the more reasonable ones of the Khmer Rouge will have to play some part in the future government, but only a minority part." She said that on Blue Peter in 1988, probably trying to soften any blows that would come when it was revealed that the SAS were over there supporting the Khmer Rouge. Of course Thatcher and Reagan had no problem backing genocidal loons because they were fighting these guys. Back to Back South East Champs, pissed off the US and China. EDIT: Supporting the Khmer Rouge may be unhealthy LP97S fucked around with this message at 13:12 on Apr 8, 2013 |

It's interesting how members of her own party forced her out due to increasing unpopularity, meanwhile her American counterpart Ronald Reagan has subsequently been idolized by his own party and considered one of the greatest Presidents of all time.

She was Brittan's Reagan, treated the English economy like a household, and looked down on anyone who isn't a royal or noble. She was about as regressive as you could get. Oh, and she whole hog into a war over a set of barren rocks off the coast of Argentina. wikipedia posted:After moving into 10 Downing Street, Thatcher introduced a series of political and economic initiatives to reverse what she perceived to be Britain's precipitous national decline.[nb 1] Her political philosophy and economic policies emphasised deregulation (particularly of the financial sector), flexible labour markets, the privatisation of state-owned companies, and reducing the power and influence of trade unions. Thatcher's popularity during her first years in office waned amid recession and high unemployment, until economic recovery and the 1982 Falklands War brought a resurgence of support, resulting in her re-election in 1983.

Admiral Bosch posted:Speaking as someone who wasn't even gestating during her tenure, can someone sum up for a dumb American just why Thatcher was horrible? - Along with Reagan, she popularized neoliberalism in the West to the point where her former opponents in the UK (Labour) now support it, leaving us with no viable democratic alternative. - The Miner's Strike and a bunch of other aggressively put down protests and general strikes. - The general decimation of the British manufacturing industry. Under her administration the process of outsourcing jobs got underway proper. - The dismantling of the welfare state, essentially starting the meme about benefits claimants being scroungers, when before there was almost a bipartisan consensus about the need for (certain types of) welfare. - Mass privatization of government services. - Even the poo poo that she wasn't 100% wrong about compelled her to lead us into stupid chest-beating wars (the Falklands). - Coined loads of annoying phrases like "moaning minnies" and "this lady's not for turning". - A lot of stuff I can't even remember off the top of my head. - Has a cult of personality to this day and like Reagan the worst part about her is that she paved the way for a rightward shift in the politics of her country that is really loving pervasive and hard to combat. TL;DR: She was British Reagan in essentially every way, down to the eventual dementia. Weldon Pemberton fucked around with this message at 16:38 on Apr 8, 2013 |
