Any other advise you can give? Like how to start making money? I can't even seem to build any factories yet due to lack of parts/technology and don't understand most of the national focus stuff or what admin efficiency does/how to improve it.

Man I forgot how bad I am at this game since I gave up on it a couple months after release. I got both expansion packs hoping to jump in but I'm terrible.

I'm playing argentina, I start the game making almost -50 . Ok, that's just the AI buying up stockpiles, it will level out. Hmmm gently caress it isn't leveling out. I'll just cheap my self some money and wait for it to level out. Months go by and I'm still making -50 and running out of my dirty cheat money. I raise taxes, cut all military funding to almost 0 but I'm still losing massive amounts of money.

What am I doing wrong?
Why would a country start the game losing so much money? How did they even get to that point?
Do all countries start like this or just argenina? I remember when the game first came out people complained that unless you were super pro at the game you'd just go bankrupt in the first months, then patches made countries more stable at the start. Now we seem back to massive impossible debts?

A lot of countries start with financial issues. First things first, get your admin efficiency up to 100% for your nation and in all of your core provinces by encouraging bureaucrats. Prioritize researching some economic techs that benefit you the most. Don't remember what Argentina specializes in, but if it's like Brazil, go for farming and RGO boosts since you are primarily agrarian and un-industrialized to begin. In the meantime, tax the poo poo out of your populace, hike your tariffs and cut military funding. As your administrative efficiency improves and some econ techs come in, you can ease up on tariffs and taxes.

Admin efficiency determines how effective you are at collecting tax and profit in your country. If you do what I did, your very first step will be getting 100% administrative efficiency in your largest states (at the 1836 start I think that's Buenos Aires and Entre Rios). Until you get 100% admin efficiency in both states, your budget is going to be as austere as possible. Place your national focus in both of those states to Encourage Bureaucrats. Max out the bureaucracy slicer in your budget though, as this will passively slightly encourage bureaucrats in all of your other states as well.

Once your administrative efficiency in your "main" states is high enough, you should be able to start normalizing your sliders. You may also want to max out tariffs too to be able to make ends meet, and then gradually lower them.

After your budget is in the clear, you'll want to start encouraging clergy in your larger states too. Clergy determine how many research points you get and how fast your literacy rate goes up. For maximum literacy gain, you should aim for 4% of your total population being clergy. With 4% clergy in my most populous states and with a steady stream of immigrants, I was able to hit 100% literacy by 1900.

At some point in the 1840s or 1850s, I believe, you'll get an event that will turn you into a democracy for free. TAKE IT. As soon as you democratize, immigrants will come flooding in at an incredibly high rate (again, this was with APD, not sure about HoD). Once the migrants come in, you can start industrializing or work on acquiring your cores in Uruguay/Paraguay/Brazil/Bolivia, and if you want to start working toward forming La Plata.

EDIT: And yeah, the dominions bug makes the map kind of hideous, but it's not really affecting gameplay all that much.

Seriously though, I've not noticed anything big other than the dominion stuff, and the crashes are very easily fixed. Managing big armies is still really clumsy though: I would love some sort of OBB editor, especially now that army composition is so much more important.

There's something you have to clear in documents, I think. I believe it's Documents >> Paradox Interactive >> Victoria 2 >> map >> cache. And just delete that. That should take care of it IIRC. Doing a fresh install won't take care for that. Same thing happened to me when I was installing Vicky 2 + AHD for the first time.

E: Huh, missed your second post. That's really strange, I delete the map cache in my V2 install folder and it fixes it for me :(.

Also how are you guys starting crises? I started out as Austria, annexed Krakow via console, released them as Poland, and then tried to plop an NF on Wielkopolska, but it doesn't result in any tension; the Great Power ranking of Russia more than overcomes what the NF creates, let alone the natural decay and the fact a GP is at war. Do you get events boosting your tension generation, or can you only hit smaller GPs/secondary powers with tension?

There was a Brazil LP by Zearoth, but that was pre-AHD and it is severely outdated now. Fear not, though, I'm sure one of the enterprising Goons in this thread will make a Jan Mayen LP soon enough. Actually, the current state of Dominions is perfect for a more humorous LP: dozens of ridiculous countries added into the game, and in the late game when revolutions become endemic, those dominions will be free countries and playing the game with the rest of the world. It's like a fantasy scenario in the vanilla game.

If it's launching AHD it can't be installed right, HoD has a new .exe that overwrites the AHD one. You said you got it on Steam, right? But the folder you screenshoted isn't in steam, did you move the install folder? If so, maybe HoD installed to your steamapps folder all alone and just needs to be copied over.
