I have a Hanshin Tiger's jersey and some other things, I believe their fans are considered the rowdiest but being Japan I have no idea what that really means. Unfortunately I haven't been to a game yet because when I'm in the area its all star break or the playoffs or something equally lame.

Okay something weird happened in the Eagles-Marines game. Eagles pitcher beans Marines' hitter in the arm. Manager comes out to talk to the umpire. Then both benches clear and converge on the mound. Then the five dudes in each bullpen come out and jog across the entire field to join the discussion. Nobody's fighting or throwing punches or even screaming at each other. They just all decided to have a pow-wow Hopefully Yakyu Baka explains what the hell that was about because I have no clue. e: nope the story is exactly as bizarre as I thought it was! Two of the coaches were arguing and apparently every player in the stadium needed to come watch. Brutal end to that game though, Lotte were one out from making it 9 wins in a row with nobody on and somehow end up giving up a double with the bases loaded fisting by many fucked around with this message at 16:34 on May 10, 2013 |

Any idea how hard it is to get tickets for Hanshin Tigers games, either at home or away? I've got a baseball nerd friend visiting me in Japan in July and August, and since we're almost certainly visiting Osaka I'd like to know if I need to plan well in advance for this sort of thing. Also gently caress the Giants. I don't even need to know more about NPB to know they'll be as obnoxious as the Yankees.

factorialite posted:What's the historically worst team in NPB? I'd like to cheer for a team, but it's gotta be the Cubs equivalent if possible. The Kintetsu Buffaloes were 3261-3720 from 1950 to 2004. They won only four Pacific League pennants in those 55 years, and they lost the Japan Series all four of those times - with three of those Series going to seven games. In 1989, the Buffs won the first three games of the Japan Series against the mighty (and hated) Giants, only to lose the last four. Then, Kintetsu merged with the Orix BlueWave (Ichiro Suzuki's old team) before the 2005 season. They retained the "Buffaloes" name, but I believe the history they've retained is that of the BlueWave (as well as the Orix/Hankyu Braves before them). The Buffaloes' record in the nine years since the merger is 502-598. They have not won a pennant or a Japan Series in that time. Despite their remarkable futility, the Buffaloes have had some wonderful players - such as Charlie Manuel (yep, THAT one; the manager of the Phillies), Daijiroh Ohishi, Hideyuki Awano, Kazuyoshi Ono, Ralph Bryant, Hideo Nomo, Karl "Tuffy" Rhodes, Norihiro Nakamura, Eiji Mizuguchi, Kazuhisa Suzuki, Phil Clark, and Yoshiaki Kanemura. They had an incredible manager in the late 80's and early 90's; a guy named Akira Ohgi. Ohgi was Japan's version of the "Most Interesting Man in the World". He passed away in 2005. I mentioned Ralph Bryant. I am an L.A. Dodger fan. Bryant came from the Dodger organization and signed with the Buffaloes in 1988. He did some things while he was there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frWsJz7Ijs0 Bryant was the ultimate feast-or-famine hitter, striking out in about 40% of his at-bats. Ralph Bryant started me on the path of Buffs' fandom. I can't quit the Buffaloes. I have been a fan of them for almost 25 years. The Buffs just got out of last place in the P.L. the other day. Their record is 16-20. They have a trio of fine pitchers, such as Brandon Dickson (formerly with the Cardinals), Chihiro Kaneko, and Matsuba Takahiro. They have some good hitters, like Korean Dae-ho Lee, Venezuelan Aarom Baldiris, and Racine, Wisconsin's own Vinny Rottino (who was last seen with the Indians). They always seem to be a talented bunch, always ready to burst forth and go on a run, but fall short. If you want to claim this team as your own, you now know what you're getting yourself into. But, unlike the Cubs, the Buffaloes can ALWAYS use more fans.

For a while they've been the team farthest from winning any sort of title. From 1975 to 1991 or so they were doing pretty good, and actually winning pennants, and even a couple consecutive Japan Series, but everything before or after that period has been pretty miserable. Lately they haven't been able to get above 3rd in their division.

no that was terrible shut up To be fair though the Marines were gifted two runs earlier (grounder to short with the bases loaded and 2 out was erroneously called safe at first and the pitcher then walked the next batter). I guess that's karma or something. Also Yakult's starter, Ishikawa, gave up home runs on consecutive pitches in the 2nd. A pretty entertaining game all around. fisting by many fucked around with this message at 22:54 on May 17, 2013 |

So far this year NPB teams are scoring 0.74 homers per game. Last season they scored an average of 0.51 homers/game, the Giants homered the most with 0.65/game. So if Japan's legendary lack of home runs was turning you off from exciting puro yakyu action, good news!

I've got a baseball nerd friend visiting me in Japan in July and August, and since we're almost certainly visiting Osaka I'd like to know if I need to plan well in advance for this sort of thing. For example, look at this page. Those "home" games in the middle of the month are all played at Kyocera Dome in downtown Osaka, which is usually the Buffaloes' home turf. Only the games on the 1st, the 30th, and the 31st are played at Koshien. This handicap, combined with some of their players siphoned off to the Olympics in 2008, probably contributed to their mighty choke in the 2008 season where they were running away with the division (the Giants were 13 games back IN JULY) to the point where the magic number was being bandied about, then when August started they just lost game after game and eventually the Giants caught them in the very last week of the season to win the division by 2 games. Outside of that, Tigers games often sell out. Plan ahead. This page has ticket availability - as you can see today's game is already sold out, and if you look at next month the 6/8 and 6/9 games vs. Lotte are close to a sellout. Being a Swallows fan this year is like having a hot poker driven slowly into your abdomen. Tonight, they're down 2-1 in the top of the 9th, 2 out to Seibu. 2 strikes on Wlad Balentien and he drills a monster shot into the left field seats of Seibu Dome! Huzzah, success might be around the corner! Aaand then the Lions walkoff on a long fly to centerfield off an inside fastball that tailed just a bit back over the plate. Tony Barnette was clearly pushing to come back inside after a tight ball 3 call on the outside, but forcing a pitch like that is guaranteed to float back over the plate somehow. poo poo is going down in puro yakyu. Earlier this week, NPB commissioner Ryozo Kato finally admitted that yes the balls were different after everyone had realized something was up with the insane increase in offense and after denying it up to this point. The announcement coming in the middle of the season has enraged fans (especially as Kato is now claiming he, to this point, earnestly believed the ball had not changed), to the point that thousands of fans are contacting the league office and many are demanding resignation. There's also the matter that it affects players who may have signed contracts with performance bonuses based on the 2011/2012 ball. quote:Sponichi: Did you not think something was wrong after looking at the data? It seems like this is mostly the fault of NPB secretary general Kunio Shimoda, who contacted Mizuno about changing the baseballs in September and declined to make an announcement. The official story is that Kato was not informed at all, but that's crazy. quote:Timeline of events according to what the NPB mentioned during the press conference on Wednesday: The first three articles here cover it thoroughly: http://yakyubaka.com/tag/standard-baseball/ fisting by many fucked around with this message at 19:31 on Jun 14, 2013 |
