Finished with Da Capo, I think. I don't have 100% of the scenarios or the CGs, but I've done all the routes.

Good:
+ The jokes were actually funny at times
+ The structure of the common route was fun, basically just a collection of sketches.
+ None of the true ends were emotional lows blows.
+ Kotori's route
+ Miharu's route
+ ...Mako's route, I guess?

Not good:
- The porn
- Sakura's route, goddamn.
- Nemu's route
- Ultimately a bit bland
- Unnecessarily convoluted premise
- Coughing petals, really? Really?

what:
:catstare: Submissive catgirl maid? Come on, now.
 Incest (She's your sister, dude. Oh, yeah, and Sakura's your second cousin. The former is worse, though.)
:shepicide: Pedophilia (Roleplayed in Sakura's route.)

Despite all that, I enjoyed the VN. I'm actually sort of interested in trying out Da Capo 2. What about Innocent Finale? I see it has been translated as well.

The direct Higurashi references (like where Battler talks about it as if it were a real game) are probably meant as a joke, meaning that it's possible there are some actual connections between the two. Actually when the Matsuribayashi manga came out Amakusa is one of the Mountain Hounds working for Okonogi, which would explain how the two knew each other in Umineko. I don't think it's meant to be anything particularly deep though other than some fun speculation for the fanbase to chew on.

Lambdadelta is indeed meant to resemble Takano. Lambda=3, Delta=4, and Mi=3, Yo=4. Lambdadelta's power of "certainity" also greatly resembles Takano's role and approach. This Umineko TIP further connects the two. However there are some superficial similarities to Satoko as well, such as their ohohoho laugh.

After you finish with Matsuribayashi, I recommend getting the secret ending and playing Saikoroshi-hen in Higurashi Rei.

Wait holy poo poo, is this going to be like Episode 8 where I can actually play it as a game? Holy poo poo i'm psyched. Also, that's actually really cool - it'll be interesting going through the latter episodes of Umineko with that in mind once the PS3 patch is released. As for the references, that is really really awesome. You know now that I think of it, assuming that Rika actually survives this game... Once again, major Umineko spoilers Is it possible that she's actually Featherine? She looks similar to Rika, and it would explain how Bernkastel and Lambdadelta started showing up in the stories and having such similarities to their Higurashi counterparts, since I think she was helping Battler write the stories. My memory of what actually went down in EP 8 is kind of a mess because it was all over the place, but I think that was what was happening anyways. This series is so goddamn interesting, I love it.

e1: Oh man, this is probably way less complex than i'm making it out to be but I love the idea of this. This is going to be fun!

Again, these aren't "the same characters" between Higurashi and Umineko. They're "inspired by" characters. It's okay to like them in Higurashi and feel they're dicks in Umineko. They're essentially different existences. Don't drive yourself crazy trying to tie everyone down to a continuity.

e: Okonogi is an exception. I don't know what their deal is and we'll likely never know until he writes a third when-they-cry and we find out how they're saving the world?

Hah, i'll be the first to admit that i'm pretty much a dunce when it comes to mysteries and putting together little character bits like that. Thanks for clearing that up guys, it makes things a bit more clear, even if it is all just relatively irrelevant. It's also fun to see stuff like that in different stories, and i'm legitimately impressed that they stood on their own well enough in Umineko for me to be able to think "oh hey new characters" rather than "Oh, characters I don't know that are doing stuff I don't get" which I would probably do if I tried pulling that trick in something I wrote.

Taiga has easily the best voice in stay night. I don't care that Heaven's Feel has a pretty slow start, as long as there's more scenes of Taiga having an incredible amount of fun with her lines.

Also, quick question for anyone in the know: I know the game says Kiritsugu took a liking to Taiga and had her staying at the Emiya household since after the end of the Fourth War, but I've also heard it was mainly because she reminded him of Shirley. Was that from an interview with Nasu or something?

UBW. This is a slightly edited stream of consciousness.
God dammit Shirou. Caster is gone, go get Saber dammit. Stop looking at Kuzuki, and see if she's alright like you're supposed to.

Who the hell is Archer. They've been dropping hints left right and center, but I just can't figure it out. Is he supposed to be Kiritsugu or something? There's obviously a fuckton in common with Shirou, but I don't know for certain.

Rin's making another command spell?! Go Saber!

What spell is Archer casting? There's the field of swords, and the route title. Ah, we're in the place all the dreams took place in. Wait, he was a magus before a Heroic Spirit? That explains how he was able to help Shirou earlier after his projection magic. Maybe he really is Kiritsugu.

More projection from Shirou? He's gonna kill himself, isn't he.

Oh drat, Saber's stats got boosted after becoming Rin's servant.

Lancer really just does whatever the hell he wants, doesn't he. In Fate, fighting Gil, and here continuing to help Shirou to spite Archer.

Does that comment in the interlude mean anything? With a hero being able to meet himself after he dies? God, it sounds crazy, but is Archer what Shirou becomes?

Whelp, that basically confirms it. He's Kiritsugu.

I'm stopping as they make their way to the castle again.

Now for the less stream of consciousness part.

If Archer is Kiritsugu, that means so much for his motivation, and hatred for Shirou. After all, he's seeing his son make the same mistakes he made, despite him telling Shirou it will never work out. It also explains why he knows Saber. I started my post after I saw it, but I was really thinking that Gilgamesh had killed Caster. I guess that goes without saying, but if he can only project what he's seen, then he saw the attacks in the last Holy Grail War.

I still don't know what Kotomine is thinking though. Lancer is clearly acting of his own accord right now, having served his purpose to help take out Caster. Gil is presumably still with Shinji, though who knows what they're doing. I guess they're doing/did something with Ilya's heart, but that doesn't mean anything to me right now. Speaking of Ilya, how's the Grail going to appear now? Is her heart all they need for it/to create a new vessel?

Since Caster's gone, the two servants Kotomine has to kill are Saber and Archer. I can't tell what's going to happen to Archer. Him and Shirou pairing up is out of the question as things stand, and I can't see that changing, what with their imminent fight. So, if we assume he's out, then there's just Saber against Lancer and Gil, depending on what Lancer does. I'm worried about what favours he's going to ask of Rin though.

Lancer is the best character in F/SN. Period. You can have your douchebag priests and rear end in a top hat archers, I'll take my badass Irish hero.

On a related topic, not sure if it's been posted in the previous thread, but ufotable made the animations for the F/SN Vita release:

I really love what they did with all the OPs. Arcadia(Fate) is a big booming song about heroics and wishes, Horizon(UBW) is the same song as Arcadia, just really technolized and with slightly but at the same time very different lyrics, and Another Heaven is... well, depressing as hell.

Sylphid

It would be a drat shame if a Heaven's Feel anime was never made, since ufotable works perfectly with Type-Moon stuff, especially those OPs. I always did think it was weird the original release had attract videos for Fate and UBW and not for Heaven's Feel. I especially dig that part in the HF OP where Saber Alter parries like 10 different attacks from Rider from all directions. That fight would amazing in motion, but I really like they covered all the major scenes from the route in a minute 30.

But it works because all of the weird things you see in the intro, like Shirou having Archer's arm, Berserker being all dark and red, Kotomine running through the forest with Ilya, Sakura being all dark and red, Saber with black armor with red highlights, Rin fighting a bunch of black blob things with red eyes is left mysterious enough to leave you wanting to find out what happened. Did the Vita version re-do any of the other graphics?

I also really like the penultimate shot of the UBW opening, with Shirou and Archer facing each other, in a field divided in half and each of them standing in his version of the Reality Marble

I'm really curious about the re-release, anybody got the new graphics? I wonder if there's any chance of them releasing it in the west, now that F/Z made it to the States.
And finally, what do you think of the soundtrack besides the openings? Here are the remade versions of This Illusion, EMIYA, Light and Darkness, Lightning Swordsman, Ever-present Feeling, Sword of Promised Victory, Clashing Souls, Whirlpool of Fate, Surrounded by Smiling Faces, Into the Night, The End of the Dream, Sorrow, Last Strength, Mighty Wind, Sonic Barrage and Golden King. Most of the soundtrack isn't really bad, but I jus can't imagine it working as well as he original did. Especially Emiya and Light and Darkness lack the oomph that made them excellent for the scenes they were in.

Light and Darkness was over the last fight of HF, and I think Mighty Wind was over some Saber Alter scenes. Overall, I dunno, none of the remixes seem like they're that much worse, but neither are they that much better, it seems like something they redid just to sell the Vita edition.

I started reading Da Capo 2 and finished Anzu's route.

Good poo poo. Really good. Every aspect is so much better than in 1. Every single one, and there's a lot of fun little references to the original, but they're not absolutely necessary to enjoy the story.
The art is way better, and each character has a distinct style. The characters are also better written and seem to go beyond their Wacky Gimmick. They're actually quite fun and interact with each other more during the story.
I'm also digging the interface. The option of choosing a menu voice is neat, and actually seeing which character is at which location at the menu screens is very helpful. Choosing locations blindly was a real hassle in the original.
Also, the creepy aspects of the original are much milder here, at least so far.

What I'm not digging is that I had to choose which common path to go for before I knew what that entailed (namely, which three character routes I could choose from). I'm kinda glad I picked the puppet show, though, because that led to Anzu's route, who seems to be the Best Character in the VN. That was something of a surprise, because her introduction made her seem a bit mean. The source of the drama later on her route was familiar, but well-handled, I think.

The porn is awful, of course, but that's a given.

Basically, I think this might just be the best VN I've read outside of the classics, so far. Certainly the best High School Drama one. I might be overrating this because I really enjoyed Anzu's route and because of the contrast to the original, but we'll see about that. Thanks for the recommendation, Blhue!

EDIT:
By classics, I mean stuff like Tsukihime, Muv-Luv, Steins;Gate and so on. I'm gonna stress this: I am not comparing this with them, they're still pretty much in their own league. I do think I'm enjoying this more than, say, Little Busters, though.
