I love that NOM wails and nash their teeth about being designated a hate group by the SPLC and then go ahead and post segregationist propaganda without a shred of irony. Gee, Maggie, I have no idea why people think you're a hate group. Maybe we're the real bigots?

None of this has anything to do with same sex marriage, which is not legal in Hawaii. But please show contempt for decades old anti-discrimination laws, NOM. I'm sure that will go over well.

The Nevada Senate just voted to repeal Nevada's constitutional ban on gay marriage, and replace it with an affirmative guarantee of marriage equality. http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/government/nevada-senate-passes-resolution-legalize-gay-marriage

Today, we will see votes from the Nevada House (if passed gay marriage is on the ballot in 2016), the Delaware House (if passed it goes to the Senate, where Dems have a majority, and the Gov has promised to sign it into law), the Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee (if passed it goes to their full Senate this week, and the Gov has promised to sign it into law), and the French legislature (if passed France has legal marriage equality). Today's going to be a big (potentially very good) day.

Looked like the Nevada one needs the exact same thing (senate and house) to happen next year, too, before it goes onto the 2016 ballot. Exciting stuff overall, though!

Right before the vote two protesters from the movement against the bill tried to unfurl a banner. The Speaker got angrier than at any point before in the debate and demanded they be thrown out: Claude Bartolone posted:"Get those nutcases out of here! The enemies of democracy have no place in this chamber! Throw those nutcases out! Come on, throw those enemies of democracy out of here! Throw this man out of here! No place for the enemies of democracy in this chamber! You can see the incident in this video from a French news channel (apologies, there might be ads before it starts).

The hashtag "Homosexuals must be killed" is trending on twitter."Gay Star News posted:A Twitter hashtag loosely translated as ‘Homosexuals must be killed’ is going viral before France's National Assembly votes on gay marriage today (23 April). It is unknown where ‘Il Faut Tuer Les Homosexuels’ started from, but thousands of social networking users are tweeting about the trending topic. As Yagg.com points out, many are pointing to a user called Mamadou Neutron for the original tweet. He has since deleted the tweet but continues to publish homophobic messages. While some anti-gay Twitter users have just posted the hashtag, others have added messages like ‘Kill them all’ and ‘For a better world…’ Gay rights organization SOS Homophobie is inviting everyone to screen capture the homophobic tweets and send the pictures to them. True, but there's been a lot of rather rowdy and at times violent protest from Christians, especially Catholics. They're also a lot larger and a lot more influential than the Muslim population, although they're not as immediately visible as a religious group (if that makes sense).

Yeah, while a lot of the most vocal groups in the U.S. against gay marriage are christian, its important to remember that Christianity is not the only religion with special marriage ceremonies (that come with restrictions on who can participate) nor is it the only religion with politically active members and groups. Orthodox Judaism, Tibetan and Therevana Buddhism, most Latter Day Saints, and Islamic practices of all stripes all oppose same-sex marriage, for a variety of reasons.

Well it's going to mainly be white Catholics because that's the majority religious types in France. Numbers don't really make bigotry any better or worse just more influential.

Does anybody know anything about the Delaware Senate? A 13-8 majority does not leave much room for defectors and apparently there was a lot of arm twisting in 2011 so support for the civil unions bill is not a reliable indicator.

In addition to the numerous good news for marriage equality, Senate Democrat Kent Eken, from a district that narrowly supported last year's ban, announced his support for Minnesota's gay marriage bill, and Representative Ken Dunkin (chair of the black caucus in the Illinois legislature) signed onto Illinois' gay marriage bill as a co-sponsor today. Oh, and a new survey finds that support for gay marriage in Houston has reached 52%. Chris James 2 fucked around with this message at 04:31 on Apr 24, 2013 |

So happy that the French passed the bill! Here is a map in French of the countries that legalized union between homosexual (light blue), who acknowledge it in another type of contract (dark blue) and who are heavily against it (prison, capital punishment) in red. There's still a lot of work. http://info.rts.ch/cartes/info.php?carte=69

From what I understand in both Japan and South Korea it's not so much dislike of gays or anything, it's just a general shared apathy. LGBT advocates exist and, again purely in my understanding, they don't face tons of opposition beyond old people being stereotypical old people and just kinda not getting it, it's just that the government constantly uses the 'well there are bigger issues' line and most activists are kinda ok with it because they agree. It's a cultural thing, gay marriage and the like are seen as 'frivolous' problems. There are activists on either side but the general sentiment is 'whatever'. Of course this also means if they can get some progressive leaders who would push for these things they could have it done fairly easy. Kinda a catch 22 thing, not a ton of people going "AGH FUCKIN GAYS" is nice, but at the same time that means the status quo is pretty strong.
