Happy Viking's Frothy Pint of Metal has a new review. The show is more a recommendation/here's what I'm listening to kind of show than a review show, so the tone is more loudly enthusiastic than loudly critical, which I like. He did a crossover with Diamanda Hagan a while back. He's kind of corny, but I like him.

AVGN movie update from James

Pretty simple stuff but it's nice that he posts these on occasion between actually filming the movie as well as putting out all the other Cinemassacre videos.

Also he just casually mentions he has a baby on the way :3:

I was surprised with the casual mention of that too. But apparently he announced the news a few months ago when he premiered the trailer.

That was brilliant. I might be exaggerating since I’ve only just finished watching this for the first time but I think this might be one of the most insightful pieces I’ve seen about, amongst other things, the relationships people have with fiction, the Boston bombings and how people process similar tragedies and internet critic culture. Maybe my opinion will change after I think about a bit more or watch parts of it again but bravo for creating something that left such a great first impression, on me at least.

Edit: Have you thought about tweeting it out to some of the more analytical critics like any of the Chez Apocalypse crowd or Film Crit Hulk or anyone else who’s a bit net-famous who you think might be interested in it? I don’t know how those people are about pimping stranger’s content but it’s worth a shot. A video like that is worth a bit of self-promotion.

As Macklemore said in "Thrift Shop", I got a big cock.

Wait, no, I mean this is awesome. I always liked it when critics compared two objects, like Nostalgia Critic's Old vs. News (best feature NC made before Editorials) or Todd's previous music comparisons. I don't know, the review may simply fall to shallow comparison (the most egregious case I can think of being the 'classic-ness of songs' in Chocolate Factory Old vs New) instead of something with proper depth, but so far the '[x] vs [y] reviews' I've seen had revealed good points about something that I didn't notice when enjoying [x] or [y] separately. Things like Frodo's more active roles in Lord of the Ring Old vs. New or the the Thrift Shop's going against overspending from this reviews increases the entertainment I get from both. I think that's what a good criticism should do.

Do we still talk about Game Grump in this thread? Because if so, I just want to say it is so god damned frustrating watching them play a game that you like, because they are so bad at figuring out ANYTHING AT ALL. They recently played the Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee fighting game for the Gamecube again, using codes to unlock all the monsters but they are so freaking bad at it, which wouldn't frustrate me so much because they've only played it once before, but they do not experiment at all with any buttons. They just mindlessly mash the same buttons over and over and then complain about the "lack of moves" when the game has tons of stuff you can do, and tons of strategy outside of just button mashing punches and kicks at each other. Jon flies once with Rodan, never with King Ghidorah, and Arin throws a building once (which is a huge part of the game). They don't figure out how to use energy attacks until the last fight of the video. Argh, I'm just getting so inordinately pissed about this. Does anyone else feel this way about watching their videos?

Maybe it's because I'm really familiar with and a big fan of the game and they spend the entire 16 minute video bumbling around in it uselessly. I still find their Sonic 06 videos amusing just because they continue to slog through a terrible broken game marveling at the total ineptitude of the game's design.

Lil Wayne isn't even trying at this point. Wasn't he supposed be retired from rap? I really hope he and his whole crew go away soon.

I really liked Rap Critic's comment about the Harlem Shake not even being a song. But I would to see him review some older rap soon.

I do have to side with people who say "Game Grumps shouldn't count for this," because it did inevitably lead to Spoony-length derails in the other thread and they aren't Internet Critics as the Game Grumps.

That said, Doug's #6: Marv from Sin City. Good luck guessing based on the shadow.

The unspoken rule of the last thread; if it has double-digit new posts, somebody started talking about Spoony, but if it has triple-digit new posts, somebody stated talking about Game Grumps.

Funny that Doug mistakenly says Tyrion's father is the king (which he never has been) not once but twice, and then even includes a clip from the show in which its explicitly stated that Joffrey is the king. Not sure how he missed that one.

Because I'm pretty sure he's not actually writing the pieces out of a deep knowledge of fiction but rather pandering to the fans who butter his bread, which I'm willing to bet aren't very culturally savvy and likely quite young, and thus willing to eat up this kind-of content without a second glance.

A compare and contrast video is one of my favourite genres of internet criticism, owing to the fact that a good one requires meticulous research, and they tend to be really quite measured, in terms of whether a work is good or not. I find they can be a more mature form of criticism. They also are a little bit more legwork for the reviewer, since you have to juggle footage from two things, as opposed to just focussing on one thing. I've done a few myself - Beauty (Skoonheid) versus American Beauty, Priscilla Queen of the Desert versus To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (Ok, this one is a little less..measured than the other two) and male prostitution movies (My Own Private Idaho versus Midnight Cowboy.) They were all very interesting challenges for me, as a reviewer, and they've been well received.

Reading comprehension ain't a strong suit is it? I said the people who butter his bread, which in this case refers to the people who view all his content religiously and multiple times for maximum ad revenue-- most likely kids with loads of time and a lack of prior pop culture exposure in this case. That doesn't make them idiots unless you want to believe they are, which I don't, nor does it make them all of his audience--which I don't think they are.

I enjoy VGA but I can totally get someone not liking it. It's really dependent on other people making fun of his persona so if they're not into it in an episode it's just 'grown man yells at video games' and that's the pits. I thought the Injustice thing they did last was good, though, because they so legit love those kinda games.
