Looking for some advice, I've started writing some code for a company I work for. I mostly do sysadmin stuff, but I've started writing some validation check programs that are going in to our daily workflow, and are pretty important, even if they're not doing a whole lot. The number of people between me and the COO of a large company who wanted this check added is only two. Typically there's about 12 layers of management between me and the C level executives. My question is, how do I log stuff like this, so I can regurgitate it to a manager at another company during an interview, or provide proof that I actually did what I said I did, without "taking the code home with me" or some other ethics violation? I feel like I am growing out of the bounds and skill set of my original job title and I'm looking for a concrete way to show this to potential employers.

You "prove it" by describing what you did and then answering questions pertaining to it accurately. Sometimes they'll ask for a sample program, but you'll never supply propriatery code. Personally I ask for sourceforge/guthub accounts and check out any code contributions they've made.

For example, I pay $700 for a three bedroom house within walking distance of town (knoxville). In parts of rural AL $15k is very livable.

The poverty level for two persons is $15,510 I suppose if you commute via bicycle that's possible. I survived on unemployment for a year on about $19,000 near downtown Dallas, but then again I didn't have a car payment and didn't have a lot of places to drive to (gas). I certainly wasn't going to the dentist twice a year, saving for retirement or taking two week's vacation in the Caribbean.

My experience: 10 years of Microsoft Systems Administrator. Learning Linux fairly quick. Comfortable with ESXi and Hyper-V Server. Have taken a big interest in security, and associated tools (I'm competent with vulnerability scanning tools, security best practices, backtrack, etc. CEHv7 [Certified Ethical Hacker]). I learn fast and am awesome at troubleshooting things I've never seen before. Very competent with SonicWall What I'm looking for: A sysadmin role with an opportunity to learn a lot more than I know. Hey guys. Atlanta-based goon here. I'm desperately trying to get into IT because I work at a credit union and I don't want to get stuck doing banking my entire life. I've got a B.A. in psychology and sociology a well as an a+ cert. I'm really looking for something entry-level, especially help desk or technician related. I've got no experience outside a little customer service at a computer store, and it's causing most places I apply to turn me down. I've got tons of customer service experience and am willing to do/learn pretty much whatever. I really just need a foot in the door and I can do the rest. I can't afford much of a pay-cut, so it'd need to be $11/hour or more. If anyone has any leads that'd be super.

Darn student loans  Edit: Still, I wouldn't mind taking something that paid a LITTLE bit less (maybe around $18,000) if it gets me a foot in the door. Thanks for the response, though! Every job I've applied to has sent me back a "we're looking for someone more qualified." Even the 'entry-level' jobs require 2-5 years of experience in the same job. I'm at the point where I'll take ANYTHING that can give me experience.

My Experience: 4 years of test engineering and test automation of consumer electronics. Digital media players, direct attached storage, network attached storage, etc. You've probably used products I've tested. I work with Python, bash, Jenkins CI, Robot Framework, Linux, Windows, OS X, virtualization, and more. I did a lot of embedded systems work in college, though it's been a few years. I have a BS in CSE. I also walked ~1350 miles last year and have a wilderness first aid certification, which is helpful if you often break your legs for some reason. What I'm looking for: Python development of any sort, test automation, test engineering, or whatever else I can learn how to do. I've got broad interests.
