Looking for some advice, I've started writing some code for a company I work for. I mostly do sysadmin stuff, but I've started writing some validation check programs that are going in to our daily workflow, and are pretty important, even if they're not doing a whole lot. The number of people between me and the COO of a large company who wanted this check added is only two. Typically there's about 12 layers of management between me and the C level executives.

My question is, how do I log stuff like this, so I can regurgitate it to a manager at another company during an interview, or provide proof that I actually did what I said I did, without "taking the code home with me" or some other ethics violation?

I feel like I am growing out of the bounds and skill set of my original job title and I'm looking for a concrete way to show this to potential employers.

You "prove it" by describing what you did and then answering questions pertaining to it accurately. Sometimes they'll ask for a sample program, but you'll never supply propriatery code. Personally I ask for sourceforge/guthub accounts and check out any code contributions they've made.

I believe it. The Southeast can be extremely cheap. For example, I pay $700 for a three bedroom house within walking distance of town (knoxville). In parts of rural AL $15k is very livable.

The poverty level for two persons is $15,510

I suppose if you commute via bicycle that's possible. I survived on unemployment for a year on about $19,000 near downtown Dallas, but then again I didn't have a car payment and didn't have a lot of places to drive to (gas). I certainly wasn't going to the dentist twice a year, saving for retirement or taking two week's vacation in the Caribbean.

What you'll be doing: Maintenance on our home-grown ERP/CRM/CMS, 50% of which is actually extracting requirements from people. People skills and organizational skills are just as important as coding skills. You don't have to have a great deal of experience with PHP itself if you've worked in comperable scripting languages.

It's mostly back-end work, with a bit of front-end. No design skills needed. The codebase is very "legacy" but improving that is a priority.

You'll be the junior of a two member dev team. The senior member has some offbeat development ideologies, but is a skilled developer. You'll be working with him, me (sysadmin & sometimes dev) and our awesome pop-culture fountain of a helpdesk tech. Our boss is the best damned manager I've ever worked for, with amazing people skills and some of the worst puns that have ever been created.

Hey guys. Atlanta-based goon here.

I'm desperately trying to get into IT because I work at a credit union and I don't want to get stuck doing banking my entire life. I've got a B.A. in psychology and sociology a well as an a+ cert. I'm really looking for something entry-level, especially help desk or technician related. I've got no experience outside a little customer service at a computer store, and it's causing most places I apply to turn me down.

I've got tons of customer service experience and am willing to do/learn pretty much whatever. I really just need a foot in the door and I can do the rest. I can't afford much of a pay-cut, so it'd need to be $11/hour or more. If anyone has any leads that'd be super.

Are you looking for part-time or full-time? My work in Norcross is looking to add another person to our NOC, and it's an entry-level position that doesn't require much previous experience. I think the position is only part-time though; starting pay is around $12-15.

Edit: Still, I wouldn't mind taking something that paid a LITTLE bit less (maybe around $18,000) if it gets me a foot in the door. Thanks for the response, though!

Double Edit: I take that back. I'd be very interested in at least applying. If it gives me experience and enhances my skill then I'd just have to look at it like a paid internship. It'd also give me more time to work on my certifications. I'm PMing you now about it.

Software Engineer
Engineering | Los Angeles, CA, United States

Responsibilities:

As Software Engineer, you will:

Work with the Product and Business Development teams to build the next generation of Machinima products.

Develop Machinima’s content management and delivery platform using Ruby, the Padrino web app framework, MySQL and other time-tested web technologies.

- Build and optimize our software to be performant, scalable, extensible and measurable.

- Discover, experiment with, and recommend new technologies for our stack.

- Integrate Facebook and other social networking services to enhance our products and improve the user experience.

- Monitor dependent libraries or services for updates and changes that will impact our systems.

Have 3+ years of experience building dynamic web applications using frameworks like Padrino, Rails or some other comparable framework. (If you’re not currently using Ruby or Padrino, but are familiar with something comparable, give us a call. Smart people are smart people, regardless of the language.)

Be comfortable working with databases, schema design and have a practical understanding of SQL. We’re not looking for experts, but you should recognize obviously bad schema design when you see it.

Understand how the web ‘works’. Basic things like standard browser features, browser privacy policies, client/server interaction and client-side scripting should be very familiar to you.

Be a strong communicator. We are a small team with big team challenges. Working in a transparent and coordinated way is critical to our success.
Have a passion for and be up-to-date on the greatest web technologies and techniques (HTML5, NoSQL, etc.). Contributing to open source projects is a plus.

Be a team player. A positive, open-minded attitude is a must.

Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the cows of war.

My Experience: 4 years of test engineering and test automation of consumer electronics. Digital media players, direct attached storage, network attached storage, etc. You've probably used products I've tested. I work with Python, bash, Jenkins CI, Robot Framework, Linux, Windows, OS X, virtualization, and more. I did a lot of embedded systems work in college, though it's been a few years. I have a BS in CSE. I also walked ~1350 miles last year and have a wilderness first aid certification, which is helpful if you often break your legs for some reason.
What I'm looking for: Python development of any sort, test automation, test engineering, or whatever else I can learn how to do. I've got broad interests.
Where I live: Orange County, California (I'm currently working at a contract job because I had hoped to go live in the woods again this summer, but I had to have surgery and now I won't be able to go live in the wilderness for at least another year)
Where I'm looking: Los Angeles. I'd like to get a job closer to my girlfriend. I'm also open to telecommuting.

What we're Looking For

Cisco UC / Voice engineer

The Role: Configure Cisco voice products. CallManager etc. We have interviewed people from out of state but are not offering relocation. If you want a great opportunity in a great city and have Voice experience contact me. We need 2 people and will be starting them ASAP.

The Requirements: Candidates should have voice experience. We are backlogged with work so we need plug and play engineers. If you are not ready to hit the ground running but have *some* experience contact me anyway.

We also need a routing/switching/security engineer but voice is priority #1. We see it as two different roles. If you are a stud and could do both we'd pay you accordingly.

The Environment: Our clients are generally 20 to 1,000 employees who use our resources for ongoing support or short term projects. You will be a consultant working for different clients in various project phases.

Best benefits package you'll see short of working in the Government.
