I mean, I don't believe a band needs to break up if one person leaves, but he seemed pretty integral. I'd expect a pretty wild shift.

The dudes voice was a major draw for me, and without it and without the double fuzz guitar onslaught it's really up in the air whether I'll dig their next album. I thought he was a major part of the songwriting too so who knows what differences we might get. Makes me really glad I saw them live back in 2011.

The Lonely Wild's album dropped the other day. I quite enjoyed it. Much the same "Ennio Morricone meets Arcade Fire" sound as their EP, so if you listened to that, you'll know what to expect.

the Empire of the Sun dudes (or their record company) seem kind of douchey, and they seem to have walked into the studio, turned the MGMT and Passion Pit knobs all the way up, and walked back out. I'm having trouble liking them at all.

Wowser Bowser is pretty energetic and catchy, not to mention their album cover looking pretty neat. I guess you could compare them to Animal Collective? I don't know. Most people just say it sounds like a video game soundtrack.
I think they recently just came up, so, grab it while it's hot.

So I saw Savages in Portland last night -- they're an all-girl post-punk band from London. It was of the best shows I've seen in a long time! Their album comes out May 7 and, based on what I heard last night, it's going to rule. I might make a thread for this one later, but in case I get lazy, Monomania, the new LP from Deerhunter, comes out May 7 and is now streaming on NPR.

One listen down. It's certainly more abrasive than Halcyon Digest and I have yet to hear a track that would be described as "pretty" like "Helicopter" or "Earthquake," but it's pretty dang good, I think. "Pensacola" is a lot of fun.

This has been leaked for a while, and I've given it quite a few listens so far, it is really good. I especially like "The Missing," and though I wouldn't necessarily describe it as "pretty," it is certainly a very beautiful and touching song. Definitely recommend this album, for sure.

I think it's a solid enough album but it's also not as good as WAP (mostly in that it doesn't have anything as perfect as 1901 or Liztomania) or even INBLT so it's really hard for it not to feel disappointing. If it had come after Alphabetical people would probably like it a lot more, but following up a legitimately great album is tough. It's entirely possible they'll never be that good again while still pumping out decent songs, because almost no one is ever that good.

Yeah "forgettable" is the word I use for just about all of it, minus Entertainment and maybe SOS In Bel Air. Maybe it's a symptom of a "bar too high" environment, or maybe that rationalization is even keeping it from worse reviews. I haven't decided which mine is coming from yet.

New Phoenix is a pretty generic indie pop album, and sounds exactly like what you expect a Phoenix album to sound like. It's worth a couple listens, there are some enjoyable songs on there. I like "Bourgeois" myself. But yeah, definitely nowhere near WAP. I don't think they will ever come close to touching that album again.

e: For content, I just found this band called The Neighbourhood and have really been enjoying their album "I Love You." It kind of reminds me of Portugal. The Man at some points, though that may be the lyrical content. Apart from that, I'm not really sure how to describe them. Check them out.

New Phoenix album is pretty good, I think. It's no WAP, but that album hit it out of the park. This one's got more standout tracks (Entertainment, SOS In Bel Air, Trying To Be Cool, Chloroform, Bourgeois and Oblique City) than weak tracks (The Real Thing, Bankrupt!, Drakkar Noir and Don't). The title track is weird as hell and totally ruins the flow of the album, though. What the gently caress were they thinking with that one?

YES. Portugal. The Man puts on a killer show that's always technically impressive (in terms of the musicianship, the stage set-up, etc.) and that covers all parts of their pretty big discography (plus, usually, a few covers). Definitely worth seeing them live and checking out all their albums. Their style shifts a lot (the new album looks to continue that trend) from album to album, but they're always consistently good.

My usual concert buddy can't make it because he likes to take the next day off of work, but can't get that day off. I don't want my wife to go because she ruins all of my concert enjoyment by "feeling sick" halfway through and wanting to leave early. So I'm going to this one alone. I have only been to one other show by myself, and it was "Them Crooked Vultures," and I was able to get up close to the stage and it was really amazing. One of the most enjoyable concerts I've been to! Normally I stay back because the company I am with does not like to be up close. I keep watching P.TM live videos and I am really getting excited.

A little late to the Phoenix party, but I really enjoy Bankrupt! I know I'm in the minority here, but I've always preferred INBLT and Alphabetical to WAP. Then again, I may just still be recovering from the ridiculous number of times that "Lisztomania" and "1901" were played on just about anything with speakers for the last few years.

I haven't seen anyone else mention it yet, but how do you folks feel about the new Cold War Kids album? I loved their first two (well, loved the first with enough goodwill to appreciate the second more than I should), but was really really disappointed by Mine is Yours. I like Dear Miss Lonelyhearts a bit. It's still not on par with the first album, and I feel like the band's expectations of their success is far beyond what they're likely to ever achieve at this point (though I hope I'm wrong), but it's still a vast improvement over MiY.

Agreeing. I think it's the best they've done since Robbers & Cowards, even if they needed to take a bit of a departure from their typical sound to get it done.

Here's some stuff I've been listening to.

DWNTWN - kinda dream pop synthy stuff, featuring MacArthur Park, some birds, trees

Jenny O. - indie pop I guess, sorta folksy, in a van, in silverlake

Peach Kings - bluesy rock with a hot lady with a golden microphone in a van again

Here's The Babies - kinda like, lo-fi indie rock I guess. Fun story, when I went to see them live I parked next to Cassie Ramone and was like "hey" and she said "hey".

I really dig the Babies, was going to see them this weekend in Brooklyn but I waited too long to get tickets and they're sold out. I saw them open for Yuck in 2011 and they both put on a great show.

Their first album is better than their second in my opinion but by no means is the second bad.

Speaking of Yuck, their ex-frontman just announced his new project; Hebronix. http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/04/ex-yuck-frontman-daniel-blumberg-debuts-new-band-hebronix-hear-new-song-unreal/

There's a stream of the title track from his new album, it's not as good as Yuck but not bad. A lot of the instrumentation sounds kind of thin to me but it's better than what I heard of his other project.

Dude should have just stayed with Yuck. :colbert:

If you're not being sarcastic, you should really explore their back-catalogue. They started off as the backing band for Air's UK tour sometime before their first album. United is a real inconsistent hodge-podge of an album, but its still worth starting their discography from the beginning. Then it becomes even more obvious how much WAP was their Merriweather Post Pavillion.

As for Peach Kings, this is some really good stuff. Every time that girl leads into a note that I just know she's gonna squeak or slightly flat out on, she totally nails it and I'm just all :stare:. Love it.

Content from me:

The Dirty Feathers are the best of several very good bands in the Champaign-Urbana music scene. Here's how NPR described them a little while ago:

Bruce Warren posted:

The Dirty Feathers' members drink from the same fountain of rock as Iggy & The Stooges, Jack White and any number of the bands that cut classic 45s compiled on the Nuggets box set of psychedelic rock. Bands like The Dirty Feathers pop up in almost every city in America, but this is clearly one of the best. Its album Midnight Snakes rocks hard from start to finish: The songs all sound familiar (a little Doors here, a little White Stripes there, a lot of garage rock everywhere), yet every song is played with serious conviction and psychedelic garage-rock proficiency.

http://www.npr.org/2011/12/21/143773005/who-needs-a-record-label-the-5-best-bandcamp-albums-of-2011

My favorites from them are Pistol Hills (the song that got me listening to them in the first place), If Your Love Is A Drug (Then I'm Feeling Sick), and Blue Flame (which you can listen to on their Bandcamp.

Also they have a new album coming out sometime in the near future :toot:

Yeah this is really good advice. It's a really solid selection of their best songs, and there's a whole lot of chaff to sort through in the GBV back catalog because at their peak they were putting out a new album roughly every fifteen seconds.
