On the subject of names, I'm still weirded out by Flandre's. It's not spelled the way Flandre normally is in katakana - it has a long o, like Fran Doll from Turn A Gundam. Flandre's a better name than that, but I wonder if that's what he was actually going for.

I always had the impression it was meant to approximate the French pronunciation.

You don't pronounce the e in Flandre's name, right?
Argh, thinking about character name pronunciation reminds me of Cirno. Threw me for a loop the first time I actually heard her name the way its supposed to be said.

I always pronounce it as "Sir-no", though I understand its closer to "Cherno", which is Russian for "Black", which is the opposite of white which is the traditional colour for snow, signifying that while Cirno claims to be the strongest she is rather the weakest. :pseudo:

Her name is pronounced "Chi-roo-no", and Чёрный is something like "Chi-or-nee". I don't see a connection.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
Cirno is pronounced something close to "cheer-no". It sounds vaguely Italian to me, but I don't know a word of Italian so take that with a grain of salt.

Flandre is... a pretty big liberty taken by the translators. Unlike the rest of the Windows games, EoSD didn't have romanized names for the characters, and of the cast of EoSD only Rumia and Flandre have never appeared again. It's written in katakana as fu-ran-dō-ru, which would be pronounced something like "Frandoll". Her name does appear in PMiSS though, as sort of a signature on her portrait. It's handwritten, but to me it looks like Frandlo. Maybe Frandle. Although neither of those spellings would explain the long o sound.

In short, while it's currently impossible to change the fandom's perception of her name, ultimately it comes from translators making stuff up.

They're both in PMiSS and StB.

As I recall, the consensus is that フランドール is an attempt to say Flanders in Japanese. Flandre is a decent enough compromise between the original name and the katakana.

Related: The fact that everyone refers to Alice's PCB stage theme as "The Dollmaker of Bucuresti", because whoever first translated it couldn't be assed to put ブクレシュティ into English like the rest of the title instead of just transliterating the katakana and thus putting it into Romanian.

I meant "showed up in a game" so I wasn't counting PMiSS, but I completely forgot about StB. Does it have the characters' names written in English though? I can't remember off the top of my head, but it doesn't have healthbars which is where they normally appear.

PMiSS does have their names written down, but it comes in the form of signatures so it's not always clear. Also Remilia misspells Scarlet as Scaret. Rumia is Rumia and Flandre is Frandle.

Also, that youkai flying with Lily White showed up in Curiosities of Lotus Asia where her most notable actions were reading a book once and getting beat up by Reimu and Marisa for reading a book, so I guess it makes sense she makes a cameo appearance in a manga about a librarian?

Forgive us. Back then (before IN and IOSYS) we only had maybe 20-30 people playing the games on our shmup forums. We really enjoyed the aesthetics and not-arcade-hard difficulty of EoSD and PCB, and only wanted to know why these girls were fighting. So we tried our hand at translating, even though none of us really knew Japanese. I ended up helping out with the enemy Spell Card translations (and taking screenshots of each one because I wanted to show how beautiful they were), and editing the machine translations into something "okay enough" for our small forum.

So yeah, I vaguely remember the "Frandoll" vs "Flandre" discussion we had. Our decision was fairly arbitrary, but along the lines of "which name gets more hits in a search engine"?

There were other issues, like what to call the boss species? Should we use the literal term "youkai" and just leave it as is for that Eastern feel, or use some localized term like "monster", "phantom", "mythical being"/"myth"? Should we call Yuyuko's location "White Jade Tower" just like how we localized the "Scarlet Devil Mansion", or leave it as "Hakugyokurou"? Why the hell is Cirno talking about English beef? Man, we really had no idea what we were doing, or how big this series would eventually get.

This explains so, so much.

Have you ever considered going back and making a retranslation with the help of the now massive Touhou community? Or do you feel that it's all just set in stone at this point and there's no point trying to fix things up?

Well, Cirno's theme song title has been fixed, so I don't see why a few other things about that game can't be, considering how big that song has gotten thanks to Cirno's Perfect Math Class.

Also it should be "Was She U.N. Owen?" imo

The real answer is that none of this "true translation" stuff matters in a game series about shooting each other with beautiful bullets.

Whether it's Flandre, Flandoll, or Flanrananamfkjahnlka it doesn't change the fact that she's Reimilia's little sister and the EX boss in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, which is literally all of the plot about her that actually matters.

Yeah, she's pretty much the least important character in the series. Also EoSD was written before there was a real setting in place. MoF and onwards seems to be when ZUN decided to start worldbuilding. I guess you can count PMiSS in there too, since it was clearly written to foreshadow MoF.
