I don't actually agree with you here. I've seen lots of people bust their asses and fail. I swear to God this place is dependent on aptitude to the point where it is infuriating, because the freaks are the only ones who seem to do well. That's probably why everyone who meets a linguist in the "real world" says they are weird as gently caress.

Nah man, we were all paid TDY as promised. The back-pay was for BAH which is a little bit absurd, but drat if I don't expect to be paid it now that everyone else has. Also there's no way it adds up to millions. The average stay (and it applies only to AF) was ~3 mo netting most people around 3G and there sure as poo poo ain't 15000+ AF linguists passing through there per year. Doing some very rough math the back pay doled out didn't evern approach 500,000

I agree with it being absurd, but we wouldn't have been getting BAH there if we weren't TDY. And there is definitely more than 1000 folk owed the pay.. 1000 x 1000 is a million dude.

Hey to whoever was asking how the Army chooses languages; it's completely arbitrarily and 99% likely based on what classes need bodies that your DLAB can fill. Also, DLABs mean nothing in class (no one will know) and most linguists suck dick at the job.

Yeah, I'm just here because infantry was full. My recruiter lied to me!!!

How bad is it once you get out of Goodfellow? I'm kind of tired of having everyone constantly tell us we'll all be shining stars with money pouring on us once we get language qualified.

Linguist has better prospects than infantry for sure, but it just depends. After Goodfellow, it really depends on where you go... What language?

I've seen the hardest working people still fail, and i've seen lazy people pass with decent scores. I dont even think classroom performance and dlpt scores are related.

Persian Farsi.

And we had this teacher come into our class from the Student Learning Center who bragged that he picked up "passing DLPTs" as a hobby where he'd just commit to memory certain words from a language, then take the DLPT for it and get a passing grade. He said he'd taken the test so many times he can just guess through them based on the questions.

Do you have orders or a projected assignment yet? PF ling you'll obviously never use your language in a tactical unit, you may get some skills but it's not likely. If you can get to Fort Gordon's strategic unit you can probably pick up the skills, maintain the language, and even branch out to other sigint poo poo maybe, not sure how focused it is down there. If you can come up to the mothership itself somehow, though, the sky is the limit.

The DLPT is a fine way to assess language aptitude; no test will ever be perfect but I've never met anyone that's good at the language that didn't get a 3/3. It's funny how lovely people are the only ones that ever complain it's a bad test, although you hear the same bitching from fatties about the PT test...

edit: or you could get onto a sot-a team at an sf group.

All the Airforce people who got pulled with her are being kicked out, the navy guy is getting undezed status, and she got ultra secret computer hacker. I thought it was funny.

Yeah, she's nervous about it, kind of pissed because of how hard it is and how long, but with her case it really was a lack of ability why she failed out. I saw her at study hall every night putting in extra hours to try and pass but just didn't click.

And after she got her slot she was approached by two sergeants from our platoon who pretty much cried about not getting that job and how they were told the slots were on a "two year waiting list".

Do 35Qs go straight to JCAC now, or is that still considered a C school for the Army?

Sir Lucius, I do believe 35Qs go to JCAC down south. I've also heard that the course either already has been or will soon be watered down quite a bit since the attrition rate has been insane.

Sir Lucius
Aug 3, 2003
The attrition rate was high for Navy because it was mostly kids fresh out of boot who didn't feel like studying. Back when I went the other branches went to an A school first that lasted a couple months, and then the top performers of those classes could go to JCAC. But this was right when 35Q had been developed, so I wasn't sure if the Army was sending booters right to JCAC these days.

Well the reason I ask is because from what I heard from several people, Cryptologic Language Analysts don't actually do any sort of intelligence gathering. They just translate. Which is why I'm curious as to what category of intelligence gathering it belongs under. To me, the Cryptologic Language Analyst position doesn't seem related to intelligence gathering at all, unless I'm not being told something. Its just a language translating job with a cool name. Nor does the Cryptologic Language Analyst job have anything to do with cryptology, cryptography, or cryptanalysis.

You probably won't get the type of answers you're looking for mostly because of :ssh: OPSEC :ssh:

As a 1A8 I can tell you this job owns. Translation seems like it would be the most mind-numbing part of the job, but in reality I find its the most rewarding. Few people see the work you produce and the ones that do will use it to enhance decisions made down the road.
