Jesus Christ, that episode. Probably the most depressing one yet. I just felt so terrible for Mikasa at the end there, especially with the last line she had in the episode. I was like, "Oh no... Oh, no..."

Mikasa getting the first titan death in the series and Eren kicking rear end to bail out Misaka were both awesome too, but overall the episode just felt... so bleak and sad. And yet I still want more.

Next week can't come soon enough.

I think that's what they're going for :)

But yea, despite the bleakness there was so much that was really hopeful in this story. I forgot that Mikasa's scarf was a gift from Eren, and the way that he was all of course you live with us now was the best.

The clack of a light autocannon going off is just how you know everything's alright.
After some wariness due to the high count of guilty crown staff, and the shonen genre tag, I finally took the dive and caught up to today.

I'm sold. I just hope their explanation for Eren's violent moral clarity doesn't disappoint.

I swear, Sigmund Freud would have a goddamn field day analyzing characters in this series. Hell, the top 10 from the 104th + Ymir and Armin alone would be goldmines.

Just remember not to let one fact be lost in your reaction to Eren's work with the knife of justice. Eren tracked these dudes down through a forest in the time it took for his dad to go get the cops and come back. So he's not just a child killer following the commands from the voices to wipe out evil. He's also a skilled tracker, for evil will not escape him no matter what it's form.

Wonder if he just kept repeating the Red Lantern's Oath as he trudged through the woods on their trail.

That's where the shounen tag comes in; Eren has a special power that lets him smells the bad mans and the rest of the series is just flashbacks of him delivering psycho justice.

As crazy as this show is, Red Lantern Eren would be a little TOO much for this series. Mostly the whole "spewing blood from the mouth" part that comes with being a Red Lantern. I'd be laughing too much at that to pay attention to Eren murdering human traffickers.

I completely forgot how :black101: Eren was in the flashbacks. He had obviously been in their house for a while seeing as how he MADE A SPEAR out of their own poo poo. Eren closing the door was sidesplitting. Also you now know that multiple character's back-stories are basically "I was freaking out and then Eren saved me and now I want to be a :black101: like him".

Honestly, I was kind of disappointed with this episode.

Mikasa's VA is still kind of flat, a couple changes from the manga were made that feel sort of pointless and dumb (embroidery, what?), the whole "Mikasa emanates lighting" thing sort of kills the atmosphere of the whole flashback up to that point, they censored what made that CPR scene really pack a punch (warning: gross) in the first place, and there were a shitload of stills.

The anime up to this point has been on par with or an improvement from the manga, but this episode was a definite downgrade from the source material. It was still a good episode on its own merits, but so far when watching the show I've been thinking "man this show really does the manga justice" this episode I was just thinking "what was the point of doing this if you can't at least be on the same level or improve on the manga?". Hopefully this is just a one-off thing and won't be the trend going forward.

DEMAGLIO!
That part in the manga was absolutely stunning in how it was executed, honestly. Would have been a bit hard to top, and I suppose they might uncensor it or whatever in the Blu-ray (I hope). I still haven't seen the episode yet, so I can't really say what they ruined :shobon:

They chose such an awkward camera angle to try and get around it and on top of that decided to cast a huge shadow over it. Given all the other stuff they showed in the rest of the episode, not to mention the series thus far, you'd think censorship like this wouldn't be so blatant or even necessary.

Yeah, I actually liked it wasn't flat out shown as well. Since at first I didn't realize it, then eventually as it kept going they panned around enough that I could tell and it made it click a bit harder than if I had just been shown it outright from the start of the scene.

Personal_Nirvana

I have no complaings regarding that scene either. It was pretty strong, since what made that scene so great and powerfull in the manga for me, was not the mangled guy, but Armin's breakdown.

It was pretty obvious what happened in that scene and didn't remove the emotional feeling from that scene. In fact, I like the anime version better because the manga version is so over the top that it's just silly.

Good god do you people not understand understating your violent imagery so what little there is has more of an emotional kick? He was clearly not moving, and what little we could see suggested he had lost most of his body.

Madoka did a similar thing and it was awesome for it.

Folks who read the manga are... not used to understated violent imagery. To say the least.

Honestly, I've felt overt and understated each have their merits. The first episode with the mother just off screen was honestly more disturbing "censored" that way than seeing her legs sticking out of the titan's clenched teeth at odd angles was in the manga.

This episode however... I'm not sure I'd be able to make out what was going on if I didn't have the manga panel seared into my brain. I guess even if it was effective for folks who didn't read the manga, as a slow realization, anyone who did read the manga would probably just be kind of frustrated at the lack of clarity, waiting for the reveal that never comes.

It was pretty clear what happened to him. Although I find it kind of odd they would even bother censoring it considering they've shown limbs being chomped off before and that panel isn't even all that graphic.

It's a reflection of the society they live in; it's not exactly accurate to call it "medieval" given the whole future history thing, but violence is a lot closer and less abstracted for them than it is for us.

Eren's dad may not have the most shining standards of morality, either. :v:
