After messing around in Roll20, I found a way to automatically include the current escalation die value in the relevant macros: First, you create an "Escalation Die" character on the Journals tab. This step doesn't matter, but its name should be something you aren't likely to misspell. You can add custom attributes to characters, so I give the EDie a "Value" attribute that goes up to 6 and starts at 0. Then I make a token, and set that to represent the EDie. When a token is representing a character, you can set the bars to represent an arbitrary attribute so now people can just look at the EDie token to see where the battle is at, and it's really easy to change the value. But that's not all! So we go to the option tab and add a "Melee" macro. While you can make character specific macros, those can only reference attributes from the character they're assigned to. It would be simpler overall to just set everything besides the Escalation Die to a constant number, but I wanted to see what the syntax could do so everything in the attack expression is pulled from Killbot's character sheet. I think I might be able to make the damage die generic as well, probably as (@{Killbot|Level})d(@{Killbot|Weapon_die})+@{Killbot|STR} (just tested, that works). And with the Escalation Die at 0, Killbot having a 0 STR mod, and being level 1, this is what that macro spits out. I can edit the EDie's Value directly on its token and everyone's macros would automatically update.

After having the players stop by the City of New Port, I was disappointed with the sparse writeup the city had and tried to spend a few minutes trying to puzzle through something suitably gonzo to fit in with the rest of the campaign. Nothing much came to mind, so I decided to go around the table and tell my players: "give me One Unique Thing" about New Port. One player decided that the city was constantly under siege by megafauna from the Wild Wood, another told me that nobody knows where the fresh water in the city's canals comes from, and so forth. And now I'm doing this for every city they encounter.

I'm not sure if one of Pelgrane's online articles addressed this already, but I found it odd that there's no specifically Crusader-aligned monsters in the book. On the one hand that makes sense, because the Crusader is rad so why would you ever fight him, but it seemed like a weird gap. So to fill that and to get a feel for 13A monster creation, I took a swing at writing up some Crusader enemies. Could someone give me some feedback on these guys?

But I'd rather not let all that work go unremarked upon so I will say that I really, really like both the monsters and the drawings. Good job, seriously. This is definitely how I'd envision an army lead by the Crusader.

I feel like the game needs a selection of Icon minion enemies (who aren't necessarily monsters, exactly) who can be dropped in the game on the fly when the relationship dice and the story come together to indicate that, for example, some of the Archmage's henchmen show up and cause trouble. I've been meaning to stat up a bunch of these things for various Icons, but I'm in grad school and also running a different system, so I haven't made that happen yet. Would you have any interest in putting together more of these for some other Icons? I'd love to see more.

After mulling over the results of my first session some more I think I'd like to ask for some feedback on how I handled the icon rolls at the beginning of the session. After all, I'm new to this sort of game element and still a bit unsure if the stuff I came up with to weave the results in was, for lack of a better word, "right." Many sixes and fives were rolled so I had ample opportunity to come up with stuff. The general plot of the session was: the party gather info from an underworld contact, use the info to find an imperial ship that disappeared a few days ago, strip it of all valuables and found a hint towards buried treasure, but before setting out to dig that up, they fence a hold full of cargo to another underworld boss. Sixes rolled: Barbarian for Prince of Shadows, positive relationship: she was the one to identify the secret signals the first underworld contact had up to signal he had lucrative info. Wizard for Lich King, positive, two sixes: he could determine the imperial ship was full of undead from afar. Okay, to be honest: I'd planned that anyway. But I did slip him a note saying this was most likely a test. Might come up again in the long term. Barbarian for Orc Lord, positive: after looting the ship, the question came up what to do with it: sink it, burn it, sell it, or pull it back to an imperial harbor and try to claim a salvage reward ("it was stripped when we found it. drat pirates, eh"). I ruled she could tap into the Orc Lord's mindset of total destruction and sink the ship in a way that guaranteed it wouldn't be found again. Ranger, High Druid, conflicted: came into play towards the end of the session when they transported their cargo from the local Smugglers' Beach to town, and the ranger was able to pick a perfect path through the bushes. Not the most inspired of ideas but it was late and I was very tired. Fives rolled: Ranger, Dwarf King, conflicted: the imperial ship was floating in Dwarven waters. Luckily, no Dwarven ship was to be seen as they went looking for it, and they remained undisturbed - unluckily, that was because the Dwarves were busy salvaging one of their ships that the ranger had run aground, and now they know he survived and would really like a chat. Fighter, Priestess, conflicted: he got bitten by a zombie dog while on the ship, and I ruled it would be a really good idea for him to go to church and have a priest bless the wound to avoid any nasty side effects. I probably dropped the ball here as I forgot to actually attach an outright positive effect. They did get into a scuffle with some muggers on the way to church and used that later to leverage their way into the local underworld, but I think there should be more, so I'll try to figure out a way to send a magic item his way and have it somehow be associated with that event.

You can fix this retroactively by having the bite reappear a few times in the presence of the undead. Use this to get an investigation into covert undead activity rolling, but each time it happens the necrosis spreads. They better find a cure... and soon! (dun dun dun)

Nope. The intended plot was to play a few demon lords against each other and double-cross their way to their goals. Instead they decided to try and win control of the hellhole in a big gambling scam, which led to a conversation about the most valuable wagers each character could make. The exciting thing is that this is a campaign, so whatever ends up happening is going to count for a long time.

Reason Number 538 to live in Seattle: while we were playing 13th Age at Gamma Ray Games on Sunday, Jonathan Tweet walked into the store. He joined as an NPC demon who tricked us all into the Abyss, then used his power to allow us to re-roll failed attacks against the demons attacking us. Every time we accepted his "help" Ash (the GM) made a mark next to the name of the PC. At the end of the session everyone who'd accepted Tweet's diabolical assistance rolled a d20: if the result was less than the number of hash marks next to their name, they were trapped forever in hell.Swagger Dagger posted:Ooh, if dudes at gencon get their books first I am gonna be so mad (irrationally or not). I can't wait for this. I've been a D&D player for over 30 years, and after a long break just got back into gaming. Been GMing a group of 1 experienced gamer and three newbies through Trail of Cthulhu. They love it, and are ready to get into something more bloodthirsty and heroic. I've been searching high and low for the right fantasy game. The wargamer would be cool with 4th edition D&D, and I'd love to run it just to see what all the drama/TGD love / grognard angst is about, but the three newbies took one look at the stack of huge books and blanched. I don't think they are ready for the level of tactical sophistication of 4ed yet. I'm a bit too rusty to plunge into Reign or Dungeon World. I DO think we're ready for this. I've read this entire thread, listened to the game podcasts, and read through the rules. My pre-order can't arrive soon enough.

This seems to be a pretty good place to post some fanart I did of Ironicus' 13th Age campaign. I had a lot of fun designing the Koru Behemoth as a mix of actual creatures and a more artificial, sculpted kind of design. You can't really see it under the glow, but it's also got the sigil of the High Druid on its head-orb. It was also pretty interesting coming up with the look of the Hellhole they're currently surfing into, and it's suspiciously draconic adornments.
