Yeah, I didn't really like this album much at first but it has become a real grower. I'd definitely recommend it. It's pretty technical but also retains a filthy quality. They'd make a perfect opener for Anaal Nathrakh, and as they're on the same label, I really hope this happens.

I came across a fun little demo the other day. Before Brutality existed as a cool death metal band in Florida they were briefly called Abomination and were way thrashier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEsBYS3txTs They also totally sound like 16 year old surfer dudes. Gonna break up the usual " I like Bands X and Y, what other bands would I like" and go with: Are there any bands who sound like old Iron Maiden, specifically Number of the Beast and Hallowed be thy name? And then similar to newer Maiden: Dream of Mirrors (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwT9G6t-SKI) , Futreal )https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK4Wd8mD8CA) and No More Lies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLxIE9IQOJs) Having a good lead singing voice is like 90% of the song for me, looking through my mp3s. A good vocalist makes or breaks a band for me.

A few that came to mind, though you may know these. Joe Comeau of Liege Lord is often likened to Dickinson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_zkgumLf9s Something about the vocals on "Dream of Mirrors" reminds me a bit of John Arch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkvqrCGuS10 And why not some Tysondog too? YouTube audio compression messes this one up a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFtcOcX99Jc

Johnny Aztec posted:Are there any bands who sound like old Iron Maiden There's this UK band, Monument, that put out an EP last year: http://youtu.be/JDsaUiankeM It's pretty straight-up Iron Maiden worship, and drat good at that I think. The vocalist doesn't exactly sound like Dickinson, but he's really good. Used to be in White Wizzard before. Really wishing for a full album from these guys sometime soon. Oh and speaking of White Wizzard and albums, they are putting out a new one in a month. The first single sounds a bit soft tbh, but is still a catchy and good song and apparently it's supposed to be "the simplest song on the record". At any rate, can't wait to hear the actual album!

I love the groove on "Human Wave Attack" and will probably end up writing a short piece on the track "Thugs, Drugs and Machetes" because the Rwandan genocide is not something that gets touched on much in the metal world. I will say that I do feel a little awkward with some of those samples blasting out of my car on the same continent where it all happened - especially since (from what I can make of the lyrics) it is satire / spoken from the viewpoint of the Hutus, but it's still one hell of a track.

Well yeah me too, I basically find everything here (thank you) and on the youtube channels of a few record labels. But what I'd really like is a blog or something that keeps up to date with cutting edge new stuff. I like the extreme and experimental side of metal and it's cool to see how it develops, but I need some kind of filter. fuf fucked around with this message at 16:30 on May 8, 2013 |

The Metal-Archives forum, mostly the recent purchases thread, though a lot of other threads turn up good new stuff. And the "Rolling Metal" thread at ilXor.com, depending on how high or low my tolerance is for watching journalists discuss music in drive-by quips.

Bandcamp is also great for this, doubly so now that so many record labels have thrown their entire (or almost entire) discographies on there. Willowtip, Hydra Head are some of my favourites to check out, but you can also look at the Metal labels on bc list. Also seconding Metal Archives and Youtube, and throwing in Metal Sucks and Cvlt Nation.

It's difficult to have anyone else sort out music for you. Labels tend to get their stuff out pretty well, so you'll see a lot of people talking about bands if they have a label advertising it well, it will get to bloggers because promo copies are sent to them, and it'll generally get a reasonably positive review even if it's the most forgettable repetition that they want you to buy every two years or so from each band. Perhaps the most helpful in finding new music is getting accustomed to what to skip over. If you're looking for experimental and extreme stuff, you'll probably notice a pretty strong push and some hype for bands on Profound Lore, even if they're mediocre or just flat out suck (i.e. Krallice). Obviously, Metal Archives is one of my preferred places to look for music. Three places that are good to look: -Recent purchases thread, which tends to cover quite a bit of interesting stuff that pops up from small distros more than lots of people buying the latest CM/SOM/MB releases. -Recommendation megathreads, avoiding the obvious newbie posts and responses, you'll pick out some folks who know their stuff very well and have an incredible and comprehensive knowledge of certain types of music, especially the heavy/power/speed folks. -Browse recent reviews, don't read them for the writing, just browse for a general idea of what a band sounds like, and if it sounds interesting, give them a listen. There's a fair amount to skip over here, but over time, more or less everything is noted at one point or another. I also generally explore bands via relations of shared members, touring together, and bands on the same label. Labels that tend to specialize or at least have a very strong catalogue are preferable, and you won't always find the best stuff, but there are a few labels that had exceptional catalogues for a while - Black Dragon Records in the 80s, Metal Blade in the 80s, especially the earlier stuff, and No Fashion Records come to mind as being among the best collections of music you'll find. It's also worth checking out festival lineups for the smaller bands - obviously you'll find a lot of nonsense at the massive festivals, but if you look at the depth of bands on Maryland Deathfest for more extreme stuff, or Keep It True for heavy/power/trad/thrash, you'll find a lot of notable bands that often aren't pushed very hard by labels or promoters otherwise. Perhaps what has helped the most in finding new music is to more or less ignore whatever is being hyped by larger labels as newer releases at the moment. If it came out on Season of Mist, Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade, or any of those labels, if it's still being talked about into the next year, check it out. There's a lot of stuff that's enjoyable for a listen, but completely forgettable, and often strikingly similar to other bands as a lot of the stuff on these labels is handled by a comparatively tiny number of producers/engineers/mixers/mastering engineers. For example, Marduk's last album received a lot of praise, it might be one of their better ones of their last nine or so, but they have been putting out albums that are more or less the same and sound good for a few listens and are quickly forgotten. Rather than listening to whatever polished, blasty black metal a label with promotional power has put out in recent years, I've found some interesting stuff from almost unnoted scenes like the Finnish black metal group of bands with Verge, Blood Red Fog, Cosmic Church, and a few others - barely related to the more prominent Finnish BM scene that puts out a lot of music with the same couple guys at the center, without a whole lot of quality control.

In my opinion the best way to get new music is to follow the widest range of blogs/bands/people who have similar tastes to you on social networks. You'll eventually work out who is the best at recommending things you like, and if you follow a wide enough range, you'll come across things you normally wouldn't listen to. I only checked out Anciients because they got good press from a lot of blogs, then I saw they were opening on Death to All, for example.

The people on the site are really loving annoying, but sputnik music is also pretty good for finding new stuff. It's a database kinda like MA but with an added element of writing lists, and whenever a band is mentioned in a list it appears on that band's page. So it's pretty easy to find new stuff that way, especially if the list contains proper descriptions and youtube links. As always, avoid the comments though. Metal Archive's new 'Similar Artists' tab isn't too bad either.
