I figure this is about the right place to ask:

I recently came across Amon Tobin and his style, specifically his remix of Noisia - Machine Gun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Kp61Ro_uU

Now as far as I'm aware Tobin falls under the IDM banner, but I've only really just discovered how broad IDM is in general. Can anyone recommend me any artists that have that similar type of sound like the song, or even like Tobin? I've been rather unsuccessful in my search so far and I'd love to hear anything like this!

I feel like Amon Tobin has a pretty unique sound but check out guys on Ninja Tune, Two Fingers is probably the most similar.

Two Fingers is Amon Tobin's side project. Check out Eskmo on Ninja Tune, and then maybe Noisia (they've worked with Amon Tobin in the past).

Also, if you go to see him DJ, his DJ set is much different from what you'd hear on his albums.

No worries. I think it was him and another guy initially, but now it's just him. More dancefloor-oriented stuff. And Two Fingers is signed to Big Dada, which is Ninja Tune's sub-label.

Picked up the recent Dusky EP on vinyl (I thought it was that good), and dig some of the stuff on the new Glimpse EP.

Got a lot of stuff from that label, has exposed me to a lot of new-to-me artists.

I posted this in the recommendations megathread but I'm going to try here as well. I need music to relax to this summer:

Any recommendations for somewhat minimal electronic music with a Balearic/Afro-Caribbean/"tropical" feel? Something similar to John Talabot, but without the vocals, or like Matthias Zimmermann, but with less complexity?
Basically, I'm looking for something housey but not really dancey, musically suggestive of relaxing in the sunshine on the beach or by the pool.

I picked up a pair of Technics a month or so ago so I've been mostly spinning wax recently. Here are a couple that I've had on heavy rotation:

Robert Armani - Arrow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFVwtU1eZEs
Originally released on the legendary Dance Mania Records and recently rereleased on a different compilation of the same name by the Rawax sublabel Chiwax. This is what happens when shuffling analog drum work meets shimmering pads and brilliant sampling.

The other one I wanted to pimp is the first physical release from Soo Wavey Records but isn't on discogs or youtube yet apparently. I think I bought the first copy from Groove Merchant in SF a couple weeks ago right after Vin Sol tweeted that he dropped them off. If you're into throwback analog house with a modern touch you should definitely keep tabs on Vin Sol, Matrixxman, and Robert Jeffrey. They're all playing at Monarch in SF on Sunday actually. I think it's some kind of gay or drag night but I'll be there regardless. I'll be the straight dude who is drinking too much.

I really want to like this sort of house, but without any sort of vocal or vocal sample the track feels too bare to me :sigh:

Can you list a few more oldies / unknown tunes you've discovered like this? I'm going to force myself to listen to them and start appreciating house again.

Really a Synthpop thread should have been started AGES ago by at least a handful of people in here. After that, the threads are already split up just fine.

Edit: I should have quoted the rest of your post just to say "smh" - honestly just do some digging. Dance Mania is a great label and is one of, if not the most important labels in the history of house music. Your best bets are either looking through the Dance Mania catalog, searching on youtube for Dance Mania records, or finding mixes like that.

http://www.beatsinspace.net/playlists/668 Start with this show on Beats In Space with Ron Morelli and Delroy Edwards. Listen to basically every Beats in Space show.

Like a milk crime said, Dance Mania is great. There was a lot of great Chicago stuff on Trax as well. Here are a couple more just off the top of my head:
Armando - Morse Code https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TG0SvLb4yY
Lil Louis - Video Clash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZrT1S33E

I checked when I got home and that Soo Wavey record that I was talking about is the Dirty Laundry EP. I still don't see anything about it online other than Vin's picture of a test pressing but here is another one of his recent tunes for DJ Haus' Unknown To The Unknown imprint in a similar throwback style:
Vin Sol - Edges of a Vortex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckEUpfA8WjI

I don't think you're wrong about this stuff being a little boring when you hear it start to finish. Any kind of stripped down instrumental tune really only shines in a DJ set IMO. The same goes for footwork and club music.

My thoughts exactly. This is electrohouse garbage. Luckily you didn't waste too much time writing your post to go along with it.

Law 54: If a house collapses, and the owners hamster should die, the builders hamster shall be put to death.

I know this kind of in-your-face 2008-style bloghouse is widely hated, but I have a soft spot it, so thanks for this. (Can you guess what year I was at the height of my interest in electronic dance music?) The drums and bass are pure Danger, the cathartic dance-your-rear end-off section starting at 3:00 (Hot Dance Moves!) is like something MSTRKRFT/Bag Raiders/Ocelot would do, and the vocals... well, I dunno, but I feel like there used to be a lot of obnoxious yelling and pitch-shifting circa 2008. There used to be way too much of this stuff, but now that it's declined in popularity (and been supplanted by in-your-face 2011-style Skrillex music), this track comes across as a welcome tribute to a bygone era. Is 2007-2008 long enough ago that it can be considered retro? Remember Ed Banger. Remember the Bloody Beetroots. Remember five years ago.

My buddy A_Rival finally dropped his debut electro house album today, you can listen/purchase here:

http://rivalrivalrival.bandcamp.com/

I've been hearing WIPs of songs on this thing for like a year 1/2, and the amount of time he has put into production to polish each track is very admirable. If you follow video game music, you might be familiar with some of A_Rival's previous tracks on the soundtrack of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix as well as the entire soundtrack for Street Fighter X Mega Man, which was released for free earlier this year.
