SEVEN why

I've seen this sort of stabilization effect on portrait videos before

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3hTpsPlkpE

Is this something that's particular to the iPhone? Or do people do this in post-processing software?

Are you on Time Warner Cable? http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28219234-Timewarner-is-throttling-youtube-speeds

Edit: In retrospect, this probably wasn't the best link to use as an example of TWC (or others) throttling YouTube, but just know that you're not alone.

That's from YouTube's image stabilization that you can add to a video. It does a nice job for some videos with higher frequency shaking but can also do a horrendous job to some videos and make a normal video look like it was shot on a stormy sea.

Not sure what that is, but it's not a glacier. Glaciers flow down out of mountain ranges, that's coming up out of a lake. Plus it's moving way too fast, there's a reason we have the phrase "glacial pace".

Crazy phenomenon, whatever it is.

That was actually him singing the song? I've never heard the original -- I just assumed it was the song dubbed over clips of Chris in space set to the song.

It's actually him singing it. He changed some of the lyrics to fit him being on the ISS and heading home (as opposed to Major Tom in the original, who's leaving from Earth and then something goes wrong).

Really this.
I mean Hadfield is awesome for doing a drat good version (IN SPACE!) but he's not a better singer than Bowie. And as for bringing soul to it - Bowie wrote the bloody song (along with 2 others featuring the same character)! I'm pretty sure he gets the emotions behind the song more than someone else.

Yeah, don't get me wrong Chris Hadfield is cool as hell and that was a very endearing cover, but if you think it was better than the original Bowie version I am concerned that you might have an ear infection or something.

I completely lost it when he went for the "videogame on a computer" metaphor. Hilariously all the sites/accounts he links to push it from "clever satire" into "yep, that boy needs therapy" territory.

Well let's compare, here's bowie's version:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYMCLz5PQVw

it's got Bowies perfect vocals, but that's the problem, you dont feel it as much. Hadfield brings with him a sense of wonder and vulnerability in his vocal treatment that makes it (to me at least) superior to Bowie, his vocals make me feel like this is a song written by a lost spaceman who's aging and doesn't think he'll make it home within his lifetime, so he wrote this song as his goodbye note. This is why I feel that his voice in this song is better than Bowie. I'm not saying that he's a better songwriter or singer than David Bowie, I just feel that in this song in particular Hadfield Sings it better than Bowie.

I mean, don't take my word for it:-

I was disappointed Hadfield covered the Bowie song and didn't wrap up the Major Tom trilogy with a new episode. Like maybe a vulnerable Major Tom has to make an unplanned space walk to fix a coolant leak and later shows school children how he craps in 0 g.
