ColonelJohnMatrix posted:Despite loving blues and some old outlaw country stuff I never really got the whole "alt country/country rock" thing. I recently started a new job somewhere and my boss got me into Drive By Truckers by giving me a few albums (Southern Rock Opera and Dirty South). This is now my new favorite band. I love how they are basically a mix of classic outlaw country with a southern rock flair and the downtuned guitars add a real grittiness to the twang. I love these guys a whole bunch. Check out Pizza Deliverance too, it contains one of my favorite Mike Cooley songs titled One Of These Days. I hope by some grace of God that Isbell comes back.

I never seriously listened to country before but I grew up around the sound of it thanks to my dad and I really dig it, especially the sound of Southern girls. So, I'm looking for recommendations on that front. I'm hooked on Neko Case thanks to this thread, so far. But, I'm looking for a more traditional country/americana sound.

Motorpsycho did a country album with some local musicians back when they were starting to get big in their native Norway. Some bits are a bit silly (the whole thing was released as a fake OST) but over all, there's lots of good stuff - mostly country and southern rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uNUc_vrezo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqMDv68_V0A Then a few years later they did another one. Is it still cool to like Will Oldham? Viva Last Blues is still one of my favorite albums of all time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mPn21H3PC4 His stuff as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy doesn't seem to be as highly praised as the old Palace stuff, save for I See A Darkness, but I still really enjoy it. hot drat, great thread! I got pretty into country music at college but none of my friends these days are big country fans so I've kind of lost touch with new stuff. I've added a bunch of stuff to my buy list, excited to change like every CD in my car haha. PS: Everyone says they don't like country, except Johnny Cash, then you play some of the bands/people from this thread and suddenly they're window shopping for boots on the internet. Its really too bad these acts don't get more attention just because the "county" label turns people off right away.

Todd Snider is a legend. For anybody interested in getting into him, East Nashville Skyline and The Devil You Know are both masterpieces and would be the places to start in my opinion. I'm more partial to the East Nashville Skyline and afterwards era, but his entire catalog is worth exploring if you like what you hear. He's a great storyteller with his lyrics, and lets his smart-rear end sense of humor come through without veering close to novelty songs, which is what a lot of classic country from the 50s to the 70s was like too.

I would like to recommend Javi Garcia and the Cold, Cold Ground, from New Braunfels, TX. The first record, A Southern Horror sounds like whiskey, knives, too many cigarettes and homemade drugs at sunset. That is a very accurate description, I promise you. Kind of like... a post-punk Ray Wylie Hubbard? Either way, he's brilliant, and I can't wait for his next record. This might be more "Texas Music" than "country music," but I figure it shares enough of the same DNA. http://www.thecoldcoldground.com/site/
