No spoilers at all, not even in tags.

Let's Play the Xenosaga Series!

What the hell is a Xenosaga?

Xenosaga is a sci-fi JRPG, developed by Monolith Soft, and published by Namco. This is a three game series, all games being released on the PlayStation 2. It's well known for its lengthy cutscenes and non-standard gameplay, for better or worse.

Why a VLP?

I enjoy this series, though its one of those ones that I think lends itself very well to being made fun of while you watch it, so this will be less on the informative side. After the tutorial dungeon, I will be removing all repetitive encounters in order to streamline things a bit and not have thirty minute updates of only random battles.

What if I want an informational LP?

Zutaten did a well done hybrid LP of the series (most of it anyway). You can find it on the LP Master List, but it requires archives.

I love sidequests! Are you going to be doing any?

I'm going to be as comprehensive as possible when it comes to getting 100% completion.

Who are these people with you?

I will have a few mainstays rotating as guests, and another random rotating guest as well. My mainstays are DazzlingAddar, KasaiAisu, and Unpronounceable.

How about an upload schedule?

I'm aiming for about once or twice a week. No promises though.

Should be stated that this series was initially supposed to be the prequel to Xenogears, and for obvious reasons we'll get to later that never happened.

Even for all its flaws, I have a weird sense of love for this series. Doesn't hold a candle to Gears though.

That said, everyone strap in. It's gonna be an anime ride.

Oh, by the way, will you be minmaxing as you go or just strolling through? I know grinding can be a special kind of hell in XS.

I tried playing this game a few years back, but it always felt like a slog and I just stopped after a few hours. I am curious about it, because I heard the later games get pretty :psyduck:

Does the Nietzsche quote in the title have any relevance, or is that just there because it sounds cool?

All the subtitles in this series have *some* relevance to the story of each game, with the strongest connection to the plot of the game being "Also sprach Zarathustra". When we're a bit further along in the LP and meet an important new character in 3 or 4 videos, perhaps Scurvy will bring it up in a video.

For this game, though, "The Will to Power" happens to be more "cool-sounding" than relevant to the game. Though, I will say I find Xenosaga's story amusing in a strange way. Up until the very, very end of Episode III, the heroes have very little idea of what's actually going on.

The short answer is no. The long answer is also no, but in episode three they half rear end trying to fit in a reason. It barely maintains internal consistency over the course of the same game, and the only place you're going to be rewarded for paying attention is after you've completed it and are reading the Perfect Guide. Don't set your expectations too high and be ready for plot threads to be created, hyped up, and then dropped without fanfare, all while putting up with shrill anime hijinks that make Chu-Chu's maidenly love seem bearable.

Best of luck ScurvyKip. This trilogy has a reputation for wearing out LPers, probably related to it's ultramarathon qualities. There's some sort of value buried there, but it's long, boring, unrewarding, and when your toenails start falling off halfway through Episode II DVD 2 you begin to realize that it may not be the best justification for pushing the limits of human endurance.

What the shit.

Hello Xenosaga, my old nemesis. We meet again.

This series is still incredibly good, despite the fact that it can be bewilderingly convoluted some (most) of the time. And the first game is still the most solid in the series. I actually still really like this one.

I'll be tagging along for the ride, that's for sure.

I'm firmly of the opinion that the first game is the only one worth playing. I liked it, but I never finished it. If anyone wants to play these games, start with the first one and then consider whether you wanna keep going. And make sure to play with an FAQ open, because gently caress's sake some of the missable poo poo is insidiously well-hidden.

I really like the first game's character designs.

Yeah I said it.

I like that the "pretentious password" used to log into the virtual world was the same phrase splashed over and over on the screen at the beginning of Xenogears. Nice pretentious flashback.

From what I know, between playing Episode III three times or so, and reading The Dark Id's LP of Gears, there's a few, but mostly cosmetic and isolated to Episode III. In accordance with your spoiler rules, though, I won't touch on anything right now.

For me, the third game is far and away the best of the series. It's solid gameplay-wise, the character designs are mostly fantastic, and the music is loving incredible. Yuki Kajiura just blew the whole series (and possibly Xenogears) out of the water with that OST.

That said, I think the first game is the worst of all of them, simply because of the sheer LACK of music anywhere. And that loving battle theme. Everywhere. The final battle theme is pretty great, though, but it's basically a Chrono Cross track.

What always amused me, even back when this first came out, is that all the Africans around the doctor are voiced by <generic white anime VA #4>. It's kind of hilarious to me.

I wish it was only that easy.

I played Xenosaga I-III during very very depressing week last year, depressing due to other circumstances and I was like "Why the gently caress not, this poo poo'll cheer me up". So, I bought all three games on Ebay and went to town.

This proved to be a mistake.

Reaching Xenosaga III was like being cradled in the bosom of an Angel after crawling through a briar patch, all during which the awesome Soundtrack played. After playing this I made a point to buy every Yuki Kajiura CD.

Still, I wish a certain Minigame from Xenosaga I would return as a stand-alone game. I got so hooked on that, it wasn't funny.

Not pleasant when angered.
I played all three games in the series, and I honestly never had a problem with the second game, in fact I loved the combat system in it. It was the first combat system to really make me think about each encounter, where you really had to use every tool in your arsenal instead of just picking three guys and spamming their ultimate attacks every round.

The series is really cutscene heavy, though fortunately none are as time consuming as disk 2 of xenogears, although there are some that give it a run for it's money. There are some good action scene and a few are pretty hilarious.

Good luck, this is a long term project you've set for yourself.

I remember this game. Never beat it, but I got few dozen hours into it. I think I quit when I reached a cutscene I had seen on Youtube before playing, only to realize the copy of the game I had censored the scene. I dunno why, but realizing the game had been entirely cleaned of blood, and thus made even more boring than it was already, pretty much completely killed my drive to finish it.

Some cool moments in this series, but god drat there is a lot of cutscene and loving bullshit design between said cool moments.
