Alright, so I'm playing an Argentina game in HoD with NMM and AoP and I'm stuck at how to get out of the Presidential (Military)Dictatorship. I've tried to fight obnoxiously long wars and raise huge taxes but to no avail. How can I become a beacon of freedom for my tasty, tasty immigration bonus?

Big taxes and larger tariffs. Huge tariffs when you're not in a sphere can lead to your pops not getting their everyday needs and a lot of your artisans won't pull in their life needs. Their militancy will then promptly begin to skyrocket and you can pass a few reforms.

Are there any 'must-have' mods for Victoria 2? I seeing people suggest the Pop Demand Mod quite a bit back before I started playing the game, but I also remember seeing people say it screws up military units by giving them stats they shouldn't have, or something like that.

edit: Also, is it possible to sort the military screen in order of largest soldier pops?

The New Nations mod is good. Only mechanics changes are some CB stuff and the great wars I think. It adds lots of nice new countries, new nations to form and nice events.

I'm trying a game with Two Sicilies now, how does one go about forming Italy?

It is a.. very ambitious mod. But as of now, it is messing with the map terrain that is causing some pretty bad attrition. New Nations Mod and Age of Politics are good intermediates (at least until PDM is fixed a bit more).

It's also added some trade goods that can unbalance an economy that you are used to working fine in vanilla Vicky2.

If you're starting a new game, you might be well served waiting for the (now overdue) beta patch to go non-beta.

This worked perfectly, thanks both :) Only thing is I forgot to colonize during the war so the US got both the colonies, but I'll get them throughout the game.

I've been on a Victoria II rush, still messing with just AHD. I started as Japan, managed to conquer Brunei and Siam, then modernize, fight China twice, getting Formosa the second time and now made New England a puppet of mine by 1928. The only problem I have with this aside from the incredibly long grind in the early years is that the UK has not released a single nation, causing it to become a superstate. Here's Japanese USA for the hell of it.

Does anybody know of any non-grognardy games that focus on dreadnought vs dreadnought combat? Closest I think I've come other than Leviathan is Battlestations: Pacific, and that's got a host of its own issues.

http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/Products/NavCamp/Jutland/jutland.html

Yes, yes, I know that it looks downright primitive and the company is infamous for its grognard games, but I swear to you that this isn't really as complex as it looks. The computer takes charge of targeting, which means most of what you order is just adjusting course in 15 degree increments, adjusting speed, and popping smoke. And even in the full battles, you're only issuing orders to maybe a dozen ships at most because the ships in the same division/task force/group/Idon'treallyknowthecorrectterm all follow each other.

Sonofabitch, that's exactly what it was. Thanks for the advice! It seems to change in every game. I think Johan just rolls a die to decide which arcane rules will apply each time around :v: But I'm still impressed at how it breaks the entire game's localizations and not just, like, the one file in question or the mod in question.

I assume all the files are compiled into a giant localization file on boot, so one mistake will screw up everything after it.

I'm actually surprised that there's no opensource clone of these games yet, unlike every other spergfest out there. Anyway, finally finished up my Japan AHD game. First time I actually played through a Paradox game from the start to finish.

Very crazy ending. After setting up my puppet of New England, I tried crash building a massive navy for extra points since I only had 7 years left. I then find out that Germany has completely splintered into Prussia, the North German Federation (now fascist) and bunch of small states with quite a few of them being communist. I ended up deciding to throw myself at the Nazis and liberate Denmark land for the hell of it and ended up maintaining my status as a great power. Still amazed by how many East Asian countries are in the Top 16 and not surprised at the UK for not releasing anything ever (is there a mod for that)?

Good day what ho cup of tea
Can someone give me some information on how best to use the "influencing other countries" and "industrialising from nothing" mechanics, specifically for the Ottoman Empire?

So far I've just been building railroads everywhere that I possibly can, which seems to be worthwhile as they cost no upkeep and boost resource gathering.

I think I've been building too many factories - even in my most populace provinces like Istanbul, they're mostly empty, even with an "encourage craftsmen" national focus. Should I be building factories one at a time and letting them fill up with craftsmen before I build another? If so, what are the best factories to begin with as the Ottomans and where should I build them?

As far as influencing other nations goes, I noticed you get a 50% bonus to influencing neighbouring states, so I've just clicked "neighbours" on the diplomacy screen and maxed out the priority of influencing all those nations, increasing their opinion and adding them to my sphere as I go along. Is there a better way to do this? I notice that both Greece and the Ionian Islands are in the sphere of the UK, and they'll ban my ambassadors so I can't really do much to those. Where do influence points come from, anyway?

Finally, naval combat. What's the best size of fleet? Does the game have a small ships:large ships ratio I should be following?

Oh, new EU4 Dev Diary talking about multiplayer is out link here

quote:

New Network Code
The old network code that served our games for many years has been discarded. We are now running on Steamworks, and this gives us some advantages. For example, this code supports NAT punchthrough, so you no longer need to open ports to be able to play with your friends.

quote:

Hotjoining
One major complaint we've had about the multiplayer experience in our previous games, is the hassle with having to rehost if someone loses their connection or wants to join the game at a later time. We have rewritten our network kengine from scratch and, if the host so desires, players can join a game already in progress through what we call hotjoin. That player will then connect, and get the savegame sent to him or her, allowing that player to join with minimal work, and with just a small pause for the rest of the players.

Nice looking things there, I now might actually try out a MP game some time.

Never understood the whole personification of nations thing. Even less so making pornography out of it. It just seems really goddamn stupid. Then again this is from someone who literally recycles the same half dozen jokes (and is praised for it as the greatest writer on the paradox boards) so I guess it shouldn't be too surprising that he does other really dumb poo poo.
Also, did DR seriously make the popular = good argument about this guy who is PINNED on their forums and, allegedly, giving a sneak peek into an in development game? Of course lots of people are reading it, they're curious about the new poo poo coming up in your games!

The mod has like 14 starting scenarios or something ridiculous, and only like two of them are spoilery (the default one, which starts off at the beginning of the action in the TV series/books, and one a year after that). Do one of the less spoilery options like Robert's Rebellion or earlier and you're fine.

If you've seen all of the show's episodes you should be pretty much safe from spoilers unless you play the last two scenarios. Especially the last one based on the A Feast for Crows book.

There are a couple of potentially spoilery semi-random events, too. Covering stuff that the show hasn't touched on yet.

I could do with your...assistance.
Everyone always said that forming the HRE in EU3 was really easy, but it's drat near impossible for me. Every time I try it, the same thing happens:

1. I make tons of royal marriages and shovel money into the electors' pockets.
2. I sit around and wait to become emperor.
3. I sit around and answer a call to arms every 30 years or so to build imperial authority.
4. I sit around and wait until the Protestant Reformation hits, which sets my authority to 0 once member states start converting, and keeps it at 0 forever because enforcing religious unity almost never works (and requires authority that I don't have).

So basically I'm just not sure how to get enough authority to pass the reforms. What am I doing wrong?

Yeah, as near as I can tell the last thousand posts or so have almost exclusively been about Victoria 2.

Anyway, you don't get authority by doing that. It IS a great way to ensure their vote though, and I always make sure to diplo-vassalize Saxony as soon as possible.
