Meanwhile 100,000 Ogroman kills was beaten black and blue with more than 200,000 kills between all players. I will never understand how some people are able to grind kills for EX3 events.

Man, I'd forgotten how just well done Resident Evil 4 is. The game increases its stranglehold on you at a gradual but manageable pace, you get a controllable influx of new weapons and items without feeling overwhelmed or started, the difficulty jumps up in a predictable but nonetheless challenge manner, etc etc. This is why I spent so many hours on my Gamecube version. Kind of sad how rough RE5 and RE6 felt around the edges though. Did they shift development teams or was RE4 just a lightning strike?

Some people complain about escorting Ashley, but I'd guess that about 15-20% of the game is spent with her, most of it in the first half of the game. I'd love a remake that's just an HD texture pack, a new control scheme and a co-op mode. Sorta like how they added co-op to Ada's story in RE6, where the 2nd character isn't reflected in cutscenes, but you'd be able to choose whatever character you wanted, like Luis or Ada.

Yeah, RE5 & 6's campaigns were hot messes. While 6 still has the best mechanics and mobility, 4's campaign was a masterpiece. I'd love to replay 4 with updated graphics & 6's control scheme (minus cover, because cover is stupid). The answer to your question is probably the director, Shinji Mikami. He's making a new horror game now, called "The Evil Within". An evil resident in oneself, if you prefer. It basically looks like RE4 with modern tech. Actually, I just really want another full-fledged Mercenaries game with 6's control scheme. I want to counter the poo poo out of Garradors.

Just your second playthrough? I've done like 20 runs of the game. If there's one thing about RE4 that will always be true, is that it's endlessly replayable. Challenge runs, super weapon runs for fun, or just a fun playthrough like I completed a few days ago. Because I was more used to RE6, I had a little trouble controlling for a bit, but once you play RE4, it's like riding a bike. You remember all the great moments, all the best parts. Each part of the game has so many memorable parts, like the cabin shootout, the giant Salazar statue, or the bulldozer. A game that is impossible to tire of.

It's not exactly forced, and it means that if you're playing with someone else, you don't have to play separately for a good portion of the game while each of you completes Ada's story.

Yeah, he was kind of a action hero guy who was incredibly talented at killing monstrous creatures, but still just a dopey guy bumbling about in a foreign country. As of RE6 and the various CG movies, he's been transformed into a much more serious guy who doesn't get chances to tell Bond villains that they're small time anymore. Still hasn't lost his ability to crash any vehicle he's in though, whether he's driving or not.

Say what you will about Leon, I'd pay large sums of cash to have a campaign with him and Jake as the main characters. Instead of combining melee attacks they just take turns sassing the various BOWs.

Having just listened to a couple friends play through RE5, one for the first time, I heard the best summary of RE5 so far: "I feel like I had fun but it felt... wrong." Like if you needed me to point out all the parts I didn't like I could go on for hours, and then afterwards if you asked me if the game was fun I'd probably shrug and say that it is. I have no idea why, though. e: set up my RE.net account and then ran through 3-3 with a pal, can't find any indication on the site that it's acknowledging that I did it. Hope it works! Shinji Mikami left Capcom after RE4 was completed, and his manic perfectionism is why RE4 is the game it is. It's basically the end result of him getting really tired of the old RE formula as time went on and just blowing it all up to start over. RE5 and RE6 aren't exactly "churned out," but I think RE5 suffers more for not being RE4 than for anything else you can throw at it, and RE6 reminds me more of Code Veronica as time goes on; it had way too many chefs in the kitchen, it tried to be a bunch of different things at once (horror plus action plus adventure plus a new-generation cash cow for the worried executives who're watching every other old-guard game company in Japan implode one right after another), and the final product is playable but dysfunctional. One thing that's handy to remember, though, is that Mikami's absence is pretty glaring in the more recent games, but a lot of the behind-the-scenes guys are still at Capcom and a lot of those guys still have chops. Revelations is a useful example.

I would consider myself a long time RE fan, but I skipped over 6 because it received poor reviews and I personally wasn't impressed with the demo. I'm seeing a lot of love for it in this thread, so is it really that underrated? It felt pretty clunky to me and I wasn't a fan of the prevalent cover-shooter mechanics. Considering it's dirt cheap I'm thinking of picking it up, but I keep seeing here that the controls are great and combat is fluid, which is the complete opposite of my impressions from the demo. There's obviously something I'm missing, so I guess I'm asking everyone to please sell me on this game by telling me how I should be playing it. I realize that sounds sarcastic but it is not.

There's obviously something I'm missing, so I guess I'm asking everyone to please sell me on this game by telling me how I should be playing it. I realize that sounds sarcastic but it is not. It is poorly explained. Despite the fact that it looks cover-shootery, it plays a lot closer to RE4/RE5 than a cover shooter. If you try to play it like a cover shooter it sucks. If you play it like an evolution of RE4/RE5 then it controls a lot better. As in RE4/RE5, the game is about melee most of the time. You want to get in close. You want to stun enemies and punch them. You should be treating it like a brawler where you happen to have guns instead of a shooter where you happen to have melee moves. It may feel weird but guns are not actually the biggest threat. They drain your health more slowly than melee attacks and you can actually regenerate if you don't lose a full bar. You don't want to get shot but you don't need to stay behind cover and plunk them down either. (Aside from some sniper areas.) That's basically the key to success in all the games. They're brawlers. Even when it comes to bosses there are usually context-sensitive melee commands you can do to do more damage than shooting them. ImpAtom fucked around with this message at 19:24 on Jun 1, 2013 |

The thing about RE6 is that it might be the single worst game this generation when it comes to teaching people how to play it. Compared to RE5, you're handed a huge toolbox full of evasion, offense, and melee tools--a slide, counterattacks, a standard melee hit, a backwards leap, a roll, firing while prone, the quick shot--but the game tells you nothing about how or when to use any of it. It's also got some of the most hilarious bullet sponges in the series so far, unless you focus down specific points of weakness and exploit them. What I'd honestly recommend is tracking down some really high-end runs on RE6 Mercenaries on YouTube and see how they operate. They're going for maximum score potential so most of them involve a lot of countering, one right after another if they can manage it, but you'll get an idea of how the game really controls. The cover system is crap and if you try to play it exactly like RE4/RE5, it leads directly to massive frustration. Once you've got some practice and can use counters, set up melee, and use the slide, quick-shot, and backwards jump, the game improves dramatically.

I thought it was an ok game. But nowhere near as good as my favorite, RE5 or RE4. It gives you a lot of options when it comes to combat, but there is quite a bit of bullshit in the game, even if you do fully understand how it works. I felt that there were too many QTEs, too many gimmicks, and just a bunch of annoying poo poo in the game when all you want to do is just punch some enemies in the face. Also, wiggling the joystick needs to loving go away. I know you can use both sticks, but I deliberately don't rotate as fast as I can because I am afraid of breaking my stick.

Aside from learning the controls early, the Demo can't offer you much of anything outside of practicing movement and counter-attacks on basic enemies. Having the full game means having all the updates that allow you to change your FOV(Even on consoles!) and more. It's all around tightened up and the amount of effort put into the game play alone, much like Dragon's Dogma, speaks volumes about the kind of love they had for the game! As has been said, you are not told how to do anything and are left to find out on your own. If you're the kind of person who loves discovering new stuff (even during the LP I have been discovering new things the whole way, and I've spent 300+ hours at the game!) then you'll dig this game hardcore. And while the story is trying so hard to be dramatic and ending up stupid 90% of the time for it, they DID still think about the past games, especially in some characterization here and there like with Leon. RE3 comes to mind, and there was an awesome post in my thread by someone that I've been meaning to go back and look for again, because it went into detail on some very minute events from RE3 that really tie in to the characters and events of RE6 as well, and stand out for other games. If I find it I'll go ahead and just edit this post with it since it was insightful. EDIT: It was actually posted by Wanderer from this thread! Wanderer posted:It was heavily implied in RE3 that Umbrella's activities were at least tacitly endorsed by elements within the American government. As far back as the end of that game, when Jill finds a dead U.S. Special Forces team lying in the Dead Factory amongst a couple of dead Tyrants, we've known there was more going on there than we were made privy to; for one thing, there's a file near the end of the game that indicates the missile strike on Raccoon City was the government's idea and Umbrella was trying to stop it. It's one of the quieter plot threads in RE3, and was clearly meant as setup for a future game. Lunethex fucked around with this message at 01:29 on Jun 2, 2013 |

It surprises me to learn so many people had trouble with RE6's mechanics. I guess if you haven't played 4 or 5 you might be lost on how exactly the game is supposed to be played, but I thought of it more like "Oh, they took this from RE4 / 5 and added some new moves", like how if you run and slide, then hold back on the control stick, your character will hit the ground, then instantly turn around to face their pursuer. Once you've got the basic idea of using guns to set up melee attacks, and stay away from enemies that are extremely dangerous at close range and use firepower to kill them, you're good to go for the most part.

Points for trying something new, but I'd much rather be spending pesos, dollars, gold, nuyen, whatever they would've put in as currency on shiny upgrades instead. On a more positive note, Gutsy achievement. Doing a raid level under 5 levels. It's not hard. The scaling only affects your damage and capacity. As far as I can tell, your mods stay the same too. +30% physical damage means you can daze enemies and one-shot 90% of them with a charged melee attack. OR you can just run through a level and blast everything with a magnum. Your total ammo/herb capacity doesn't change when you scale downward. First stage on trench at level 14 is just blasting stuff with a magnum and throwing grenades everywhere in the final room. At level 30 overall that's 60 bullets assuming you don't switch to another weapon to chip off the left over health on enemies. limited fucked around with this message at 09:11 on Jun 2, 2013 |

Deck Building Game Trip Report! Man, this game is a lot of fun, but it takes far longer compared to Dominion. Definitely want to set aside at least an hour, probably two if you're playing with a full house of 4 players. It has a nice pace, where everyone starts out kind of hesitant to explore, and then you can acquire better weaponry and get more confident, before running into a real beast of a monster that slaps you back into your place. Characters can unlock new abilities over the course of the game by killing monsters, which is a great feature. And it's fun to see people building decks based on the different strategies their characters can afford them. For example, in our first game, I chose Sheva. The rifles in this set gain a massive power boost when the top card of your deck costs 40+. Sheva's L1 ability lets her swap a card in her hand for the top card of your deck, which allowed me to always ensure I had a fully-powered rifle. Her L2 ability reduces each rifle's ammo cost by 20, which eventually allowed me to dual-wield sniper rifles to take down Uroboros Aheri, securing me the victory. For game 2 we tried the Alliance set, which lets you use two characters. All sorts of crazy setups can be made, such as my friend, who used Krauser to acquire every knife in the game, and then used Ada to selectively explore the mansion, slaying a ton of weaker enemies with judicious knife usage. Good times! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that is intrigued.

On Casual, the rifle's leaning against a bookshelf in a room you have to go through near the entrance to the promenade deck. On Normal, as Vakal said, it's in the solarium, which is a well-hidden area at the top of the opera house, which is the large circular area with exits leading to the promenade, cafeteria, casino, and emergency communications room.

Thanks everyone for the input. After watching some skilled Mercenaries runs and some of Lunethex's LP, drat does RE6 look slick when the player knows what they're doing. I always loved the "stagger and punch" combat style and it's neat to see it expanded on. I went ahead and bought the game, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'm excited to jump in later today. RocketDarkness, it's good to hear you had fun with the card game. Krauser's hilarious in that game. I forget which expansion it requires, but with the right loadout he is entirely capable of taking on Uroboros Aheri with nothing but knives. My favorite Alliance setup is Wesker and Rebecca, for maximum dick potential. Nothing like stuffing someone's deck with +10 ammo and then forcing them to explore the mansion!
