I love hip hop, but I admittedly am not as knowledgeable in it as I should be.

Death Grips is honestly the only interracial "rap" (debatable, I know) group I can really think of, and that's super interesting to me.

I have no idea what you mean by this... Do you mean because Zach and Flatlander are white, and MC Ride is black? Clipping for reference is also two white dudes, and a black guy.

Man there's another band that's pretty noisy and also has a black guy and two white guys in it . . . I forget their name but I think they were mentioned in this thread . . . I think it's that word for when your waveform is too big and then you get in a loudness war and the music is all distorted?? (I'm kidding.)

There are actually a few examples, none of whom I actually listen to regularly but like Digital Underground, Cypress Hill, Jurassic 5, 3rd Bass, Das Racist, etc.

So... Zach Hill just formed Drumgasm with Matt Cameron and Janet Weiss. Is this the untimely end of Death Grips?

Probably not, Zach has done a lot of other weird projects like that and they usually are one-album wonders (see Shred Earthship, Risil, a couple albums with different configurations of Mars Volta people). An all-drum trio is pretty much at the opposite end of marketability from Death Grips, too. But who knows, I hope to see some interviews about the new group.

Just got back from their show in Cleveland. Super loud and abrasive. They had the weirdest mosh pit I've ever seen--people were really dancing into each other. I was sad to see that Zach Hill isn't touring with them, but Ride's stage presence is insane and more than makes up for it. They didn't even play for an hour (partially because there isn't a single word of stage banter. The music never stopped.), but it was really all I needed. Definitely investing in earplugs soon.

I saw them last year after NLDW came out and Ride was definitely more energetic at this show. They also didn't have those noise interludes because flatlander wasn't there. They played almost the entirety of The Money Store even Hacker.

I'm assuming you're talking about the show last year, because Flatlander was definitely there last night.

The drums are a backing track.

I am listening to the links in the OP and they are my first exposure to Death Grips beyond what I'm learning were VERY POOR comparisons to them about Yeezus. Nothing on that albums sounds anything like what I'm listening to right now in style.

They didn't at Bonnaroo. Last I read, Zach Hill was not touring and was instead working on a movie that is going to have a soundtrack that doubles as the next Death Grips album (??).

per the NYT:

New York Times posted:

MANCHESTER, Tenn. — Saturday at Bonnaroo started with the explosive and the recondite and opened out gradually, over about 12 hours, into open, cool-headed, mass sing-alongs. At 2:15 p.m. the hip-hop band Death Grips, from Sacramento, Calif., obscure and assaultive in word and sound, appeared on one of the smaller stages without its drummer, Zach Hill, which seemed at first like a problem: he’s a pure energy driver, a combustion expert. (He’s busy working on a film, for which the band will make the soundtrack music.) But the rapper Stefan Burnett and the keyboardist Andy Morin pulled it off impressively on their own and with samples. Mr. Burnett has the rampaging intensity of an early punk singer — he seems as if he’s inventing new ways to make music challenge and disobey — and the voice of a drill sergeant; he never let up, barking and chanting short, dark and dense lines, rocking back and forth from the waist. Performers at Bonnaroo are often flattering their audiences — it’s both a mainstream-pop festival and one that’s built on smaller, more obsessive passions — but he would flatter nobody.

This was my first ever exposure to Zach Hill. I heard it in 2008, fell in love immediately, and I've been a huge fan ever since. It always astounds me how he's able to do what he does so loving well and just elevate whatever release he's on by his presence.

Part of me wants him to drum on everything, but then another part of me thinks that his style wouldn't feel as magical to me anymore if that happened. Anyway, I'm just happy that he makes music at all.

That's an incredibly bizarre opening act for Bjork but it's kind of perfect because of that.

Also I have difficulty watching that Zach Hill drumming video, just cause it looks so goddamn painful. Ouch.

Death Grips did a few remixes of her Biophilia stuff last year, and I've seen her namedrop them in interviews. So I'd assume she is, in fact, into Death Grips.

Probably 5-deep from the front over on the right side (from the crowd's vantage point). Maybe two people between me and the rail on that side. I didn't say in there for the whole show, though, I was so hot and got bounced around so much I ended up catching the latter half from outside.

A decently large group were into it in Ottawa and I didn't notice anyone really NOT enjoying it. They weren't obscenely loud so maybe that was why.

However, Mykki Blanco played earlier in the day (Bjork refused to play the festival unless Blanco and Death Grips were also on the bill) and the crowd reaction was much more contrasted. That set was also A LOT louder until the organizers made them turn it down.

Bjork said thank you to Blanco and Death Grips, but not any of the other bands on the bill.

I want to go to Toronto on tuesday but I don't think I can justify the 66$ ticket price
