Mmm, I really enjoyed the Portugal album. It had five songs which I loved and the tracks in between those songs were solid enough that I never skipped around. I've been jamming really hard to Modern Jesus and Purple, Yellow, Red & Blue like all week.

A few there that are on my 2013 playlist as well, a few that I added (that Angel Olsen track is pretty great, first I had heard it), a few questionable entries. Like "A Cherry On Top" off Shaking the Habitual, there are probably 4 tracks off that album I would have picked before that one.

According to Pitchfork, we can expect new albums from The Dodos, Neko Case, and Modest Mouse pretty soon. Neko Case announced her album title and released some song snippets, the Dodos just released a track from their new album, and Modest Mouse canceled their tour to go work on a new album. Divine Fits just released a single with two new tracks, but haven't said anything about a new album. Merril Garbus says she's also working on some new Tune-Yards stuff, and a new Tune-Yard album might be called "Sink-O," but there's not a lot of other details except that she's been studying drumming in Haiti.

Edit: Neko Case just released a full song from her new album.

Is anyone familiar with the work of Chad VanGaalen? I have to respect someone that writes a Fleet Foxes B side-esque song and calls it "Shave My Pussy". Also his animation is trippy as hell.

Don't be sad that I am gone.
I saw Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros last night in Chattanooga, TN. Pretty good show despite the heat in the venue. One of the members came out (I think his name was Crash) and sang a song that, I assume, was called "Tell it on the Mountain". It loving blew me away and I only got to record the last little bit. Does this guy have a side project that anyone might know about?

Half the time I like their albums well enough when I first hear them. The other half of the time I listen to them once, think "That's pretty good," neglect them for a few years, and finally return to them and enjoy them. American Ghetto didn't click for me until last year and I'm only just now really getting into Censored Colors. I'm absolutely loving Evil Friends, though; it's one of those rare albums I can listen to all the way through instead of skipping around to my favorites. The real challenge so far is trying not to play it so much that I get burned out on it.

The drummer from Helio Sequence is the drummer who replaced Jeremiah Green for one Modest Mouse album (Good News). Sadly, a lot of their stuff is pretty forgettable Bob Dylan imitation, rather than more interesting dream-pop stuff like Keep Your Eyes Ahead. This isn't to say that dream-pop is somehow better than Bob Dylan, just that the Helio Sequence aren't a great Dylan cover band.

Heard a bit of it on NPR not too long ago, it's not too bad with all the neat and pretty soft psych sounds. This is probably the only major release that I'm sort of looking forward to this year.

Just a quick question, are there any other Smith Westerns fans in this thread? They do this slightly melancholy mix of glam and indie stuff, with this brilliant 90s-era Britpop influence running through the whole thing. I've had their second album, Dye It Blonde, playing non-stop for a couple of weeks now and I'm still absolutely in love with it. Here's a couple of tracks from it:
Weekend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmmLRt0p-fg
End of the Night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj7Z1RAeqBQ

Their newest album, "Soft Will", came out today. It's a bit more melancholy and atmospheric than Dye It Blonde, and it lacked a bit of punch in places, but it's still a solid album. Here's the single they released from it about a month back:
Varsity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykOK2XZ80vg

If you like that, then definitely check out the full album... as good as it is, there isn't really anything on there which works just as well as a standalone single (the one I linked above probably comes closest), so the songs tend to lose something when they're pulled out of context.

Echoing the love for the new Portugal. The Man album as well - Sea of Air was stuck in my head for ages after I listened to it, and I didn't even mind.

Saw CHVRCHES the other day (Sunday) at Union Transfer in Philly. Great show, really high energy, and then there was no encore. This is like the most confusing thing in the world when a band just...doesn't come back and the house lights turn on. Ton of people milled around and everyone was kind of "uh...what's going on here?". Daughter did the same thing, maybe UT is just cursed. :iiam:

i think it kind of sucks that bands are expected to do encores now. it kind of defeats the purpose of an encore being a surprise, off the cuff thing.
