I *think* that's one of those planes that's used for filming TV shows and stuff, probably the one at stansted. For some obscure reason they keep doing weird stuff like bolting those things to it, or T tails or stuff like that... 'whatever the client wants' I guess.

Apparently it's at Dunsfold, some info on it here:

(It's from the recent Casino Royale film)

iirc, it sits on the runway that extends SE from Chicago/Bentley, but the camera angles usually pick it up when the cars are running through Bacharach and Gambon:

Also, it occasionally is a prop used in the shows themselves, this one from an episode where the boys had to review tractors:

I remember my group getting asked for any volunteers to sit inside a cramped 737 on the tarmac at Mojave stringing harnesses and updating drawings. One one hand, it sounded neat to be around that stuff. On the other hand, dying of heat stroke in a tin can in the desert sounds lame. The folks who came back didn't seem like they had a very good time.

Man, all the times I saw that jumbo on the show and somehow I never twigged on the engine pods. Weird how you can just not notice something like that.

gently caress, I didn't even know they had started construction. Last I had heard, they were still playing paper-airplane-specs to get optimal positioning over the 787.

I still don't think it's a good-looking airplane, but the A350 definitely photographs much worse than it looks in-person. I can't get past the nose.

It's also bigger than the pictures would have you believe.

I've been led to understand that they're kind of keeping the A350 on the hush-hush at the moment, because fancy rollouts kind of look dumb if the project turns into a headache afterwards as has been common recently.

A rack of CFD machines, no doubt.

The winglets, on the other hand, are a work of art and much more worthy of the "sharklet" name that ended up with the A320 blended winglet.

FLIGHT SAFETY TIP: Fatties out first

That's accurate, based on what I've read about the A350...it covers the upper end of the 767/787/A330 market while also finally giving Airbus an aircraft that can truly compete with the 777, especially the B/C market versions (the -300ER and -200LR to an extent).

And yes, Airbus and Boeing are keeping things very low-key in light of the PR nightmares they've suffered in the last decade. That said the rumour on the banana forums is that the A350 might make a flyover of the Paris Air Show in a week's time. I have my doubts about that, but it would be a hell of a PR stunt.

They've painted "A350" across the belly. Normally, not too many reasons to do so.

Eh, lots of airliners do this now, just on regular schemes even- Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, and Qatar Airways come to mind. Boeing also did it on the 747-8.

True, but it's never been a part of the house Airbus livery. Not even for the Belugas or flight test A320s that have been repainted in the past few months.

We'll know one way or the other in a few days.

It's a DC-10. They should fill the fuselage with fire retardant, so when it inevitably spirals into the wildfire it will put it out.
