Nope that's pretty much bullshit. The level of English is totally inconsistent and nothing you buy in K-Mart is going to have been produced in a labor camp. Consumer goods in China are produced at for-profit factories, which is a racket that special interests and cronies would never let the state push their way into.

The weird thing is the Chinese is right and looks like it was written by a native.

Counterpoint

quote:

Last month, though, during an interview to discuss China’s labor camps, a 47-year-old former inmate at the Masanjia camp said he was the letter’s author. The man, a Beijing resident and adherent of Falun Gong, the outlawed spiritual practice, said it was one of 20 such letters he secretly wrote over the course of two years. He then stashed them inside products whose English-language packaging, he said, made it likely they were destined for the West.

“For a long time I would fantasize about some of the letters being discovered overseas, but over time I just gave up hope and forgot about them,” said the man, who asked that only his surname, Zhang, be published for fear of reprisal.

He knew well the practices of the camp in question, which was corroborated by other inmates, and he spoke as other inmates did of their work preparing mock tombstones. His handwriting and modest knowledge of English matched those of the letter, although it was impossible to know for sure whether there were perhaps other letter writers, one of whose messages might have reached Oregon.

This isn't pejorative in the slightest. There are several possible origins for the moniker and logo.
-The Irish brigade that fought for the Union in the civil war.
-Winning a close football game v Northwestern in 1899 or UMich in 1909.
-Irish Catholic students and faculty at Notre Dame kicking the living poo poo out of the KKK in South Bend in 1924. Indiana was, and still is, a hot bed for Klan activity.

quote:

More directly threatening to the Catholic school during the spring of 1924 was the Klan's intention to hold a week-Iong "Klavern" in South Bend and to march upon Notre Dame. The Klan newspaper, The Fiery Cross, promised that more than 200,000 members -the size of the estimated crowd at a Kokomo rally the previous year- would begin arriving on Saturday, May 17.

The N.D. students, showing Fighting Irish spirit, decided to oppose the Klan with guerrilla warfare. On Saturday, small groups of students ambushed arriving Klansmen at the train station and on town sidewalks, grabbing their robes and hoods and tearing them apart. Skirmishes continued through the weekend, and when some South Bend police intervened on the side of the Klan, a number of students, according to one vivid report, "were injured seriously and were taken to Hullie & Mike's Pool Hall where they rested on the tables, red blood staining the green felt until medical help arrived."

Then on Monday night, a rumor swept the campus that the Klan had killed a Notre Dame undergraduate. The dormitories emptied and an army of students marched to the South Bend courthouse, intent on battling the Klan and the local police. President Walsh drove to the courthouse and, standing on the cannon outside the building, informed the crowd that the rumor about the murdered student was false. He also advised: "Whatever challenge may have been offered tonight to your patriotism, whatever insult may have been offered to your religion, you can show your loyalty to Notre Dame and to South Bend by ignoring all [Klan] threats." He ordered the students to return to campus, stating that "a single injury to [another] Notre Dame student would be too great a price to pay" for fighting the Klansmen.

Rainstorms doused the remainder of the Klan's South Bend activities, but the organization used the fracas with the N.D. students for propaganda, claiming that the Fighting Irish had destroyed American flags and beaten innocent women and children, including babies. President Walsh received inquiries from reporters and concerned citizens about the truth of the Klan's atrocity stories, and although he tried to refute the "gross misrepresentations of the conduct of the Notre Dame students," many Hoosiers believed the Klan's tales.

The Huxley examples are chicken and egg arguments, in my mind. Do people watch the Superbowl because they've been lulled by politicians and the media? Or do people tune out of the state of the union because they don't give a poo poo about a speech from one stooge to another?

Also, while TMZ is horrible, Time isn't the greatest example. Time is pretty horrible as well.

Although you could argue that this type of "journalism" is a reaction to the entertainment vs news struggle.

I've tried watching the state of the union so many times but it's the most boring, pointless thing that every citizen is expected to care about, I cannot sit through it. A better argument for the modern similarities to Brave New World are the prevalence of antidepressants, anti-anxiety, and ADHD medications, in conjunction with your average Cosmo cover saying "THE DIRTY SEXY SEX ISSUE, WHY are YOU NOT having enough SEX?!!?!"

None of them are pejorative. Offensive, maybe, but pejorative no.

Blue collar laborers are also a popular naming convention.

Interestingly, this Edmonton Oilers logo shows an oil laborer. They originated as the Oil Kings, and so were apparently named after capitalists. The Houston Oilers were similar.

Some teams never tried to hide the connections.

This image has been floating around the 'net the past few days and causing :ancap: everywhere to throw glorious hissy-fits. :allears:

(That's Sabo-tabby, an IWW mascot now heavily associated with anarchism in general and anarcho-syndicalism in particular, eating the snake from the Gadsen Flag, which many ancaps and 'libertarians' like to use as a symbol.)

Watching spats between anarchists and anarcho-capitalists is always good fun. Capitalism tends to make most anarchists violently angry, and pretty much every school of anarchist thought stands united in critiquing the ancaps as 'not even close to actually being anarchists', so they generally want jack poo poo to do with the ancaps. The anarcho-capitalists themselves always seem positively baffled by this, no matter how many times they try to build an 'alliance', or suggest a 'compromise' in which the ancaps will get everything they want and the anarchists will get nothing they want. So you've got a bunch of polite, hurt-sounding poor souls saying ":qq: But all I want to do is gently caress over the poor!" and getting angrily rebuffed over and over again.

Ancaps are like the political-movement equivalent of the smelly kid no one likes who is constantly trying to insinuate himself into the cool-kids group, and no matter how clear they make it that they want nothing to do with him, he shows up anyway, all the time, stinking up the room and telling lame 'edgy' jokes to try to get people to notice him.

Dubbed the "Merry Christmas bill," the bipartisan measure sailed through the state House and Senate to reach Perry's desk.

It removes legal risks of saying "Merry Christmas" in schools while also protecting traditional holiday symbols, such as a menorah or nativity scene, as long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are also reflected.

"I realize it's only June. But it's a good June and the holidays are coming early this year," “It's a shame that a bill like this one I'm signing today is even required, but I'm proud that we're standing up for religious freedom in this state,” Perry said at a “Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion.”

At the Thursday signing ceremony for the new law, cheerleaders from Kountze High School wore t-shirts that read “I cheer for Christ.” As Perry signed, 10 members of a group called the Lone Star Santas - with long white beards but wearing colorful summer garb rather than their traditional red suits - cheered and rang bells. Standing behind Perry's desk was Glenn Westberry, or "Santa G" from Houston, and Rabbi Zev Johnson of the Rohr Chabad Jewish Center at the University of Texas.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. Dwayne Bohac of Houston, said he drafted it after discovering that his son's school erected a "holiday tree" in December because any mention of Christmas could spark litigation.

Best part is the fact that Perry this week vetoed "Texas Equal Pay Law" Another reason to despise this cretin
