Thanks for the steep climbing tips. I'm climbing at about a 6a+ / 6b level (when little steepness), but one of the easier 5+ steep climbs kicked my rear end. I don't do any exercises for climbing other than more climbing, so it may be time to do some pull-ups and a few other suggestions so that I actually find it restful when hanging on jugs with one arm. I've been at the same level as my partner for the 7 months since we began climbing, though he's beginning to speed ahead, which is demoralising. I'm sure his increased reach helps (he's about 7 inches taller than me) but I can tell I have a lot of ground to cover on technique, especially when I've been compensating for reach up until now.

Endurance actually comes pretty quick if it's something that you focus on for a few sessions. Jump on some overhangs that you can either onsight or do within 2-3 tries and climb up and down that problem until you absolutely can't hold on anymore. If you have a few climbs in that range then you can create a little circuit where you climb them one after another with little or no rest.

Another option is to jump on a few things that are at a steep overhang but that are easy for you to do and create a circuit with those. Simply putting in volume and making a large number of moves is going to help you out a ton. It'll help a lot with technique as well because you'll eventually figure out what movements are making your overhang climbing more efficient. Just put in volume and you'll be fine!

I do and pretty much everyone I climb with does.

I wear one most of the time. Sometimes I'll take it off in heavily cleaned, low rockfall sport areas, but not always.

I climbed Femp today up at Lumpy. We went to Lumpy since the forecast for boulder was hot as poo poo. It was still high 70s up at Lumpy and the sun was killer. Despite my sunscreen I'm burned all over, including the back of my right hand. Femp was pretty sweet, but it was pretty drat hard. I lead the easiest pitch (5.5?), then followed the others (5.9). You know that feeling after you pull through the hard parts and it feels like all the adrenaline has left your body, and now you have to rest after every move in 5.4 terrain. I got that at the top of both the harder pitches, and it last all the way back to the car. So all in all, pretty good day aside from the sun burns. Also there is a water fountain like .6 miles from the trailhead, and it was cold and it was loving awesome. I probably should have brought more than 2 liters of water.

I don't but know that I should. All of my outdoor climbing has been at heavily climbed areas with low chance of rockfall and I've felt pretty comfortable with the risk.

Put my gear to good use this morning. My wife Belayed me up a big maple tree that is dying in my yard. Anchored off and pulled up my saw. Chopped a bunch of limbs off. It was pretty neat, wish a had a picture.

Hopefully do some real climbing here soon.

Tree climbing with rope is super fun. A little risky on a dying tree, but it looks like it turned out fine.

There are some crazy ascension techniques in the tree climbing world - I had a lot of fun learning about them, and if you already know rope pretty well from rock climbing, it's not hard to learn.

I know some rescuers who do the tree rope stuff for fun, so at vertical practice they would build a harness and ascender out of the end of a rope, and use that to ascend the same rope. Pretty cool.

There's a few tree climbing instructors at the rock gym where I work and I have to say they put my rope and knot knowledge to shame. They have one setup that they do that's self cleaning. I've never seen them do it but allegedly they arrange their ropes such that getting everything out of the tree is as easy as pulling in a certain spot. I'd love to do a trip with them.

Earlier today I checked out the Sender One grand opening. I signed up as a member at one of their preview tours so I got to skip the line to get in. It was so packed! About 80% of the areas are open and ready. They have a ton of roped climbs up, the bouldering area was finished, but only half of it was set. I stayed for a while but didn't climb, as it was just too busy. There were little lines set up at each climb as people waited. Chatted with some of the product reps outside, saw some cool gear, etc, etc.

I don't know who else is local, but you should definitely go for a day to check it out.

I went to the Sender One grand opening on Saturday and saw the pro competition, which was really impressive and inspiring. Sharma was there but he definitely wasn't the best climber, I wish I remembered the other guys' names. Also Ashima Shiraishi was there, the little Asian girl who is super good. The format of the competition was really cool, as there was always someone climbing at any given time.

Actually the whole gym was impressive, everything was so new and fresh. Membership is $75/month though which is pretty crazy.

Hey guys! I'm having a good time, what about you?

A buddy of mine competed on Sharma's team. It blows my mind how good this guy is yet he manages to remain pretty low-key and treat the whole thing so nonchalantly.

I'd love to check the place out but I'll have to spring for a day pass some day when I feel like spending the money. That monthly price is absurd to me but maybe it has some nice perks, who knows.

The quickest substitution in the history of the NBA
LA must be cheap as poo poo if $75 per month for a gym membership is absurd. Brooklyn Boulders is $100/mo, Mission Cliffs is $71/mo, Planet Granite is $73/mo, Portland Rock Gym is $63/mo and doesn't even include yoga without an annual membership (plus their yoga schedule is garbage), The Circuit is just a bouldering gym and is $59/mo, etc.

I've seen these prices thrown up in discussion here before and it's made me wonder why things are so cheap given how expensive the cost of living can be. It should at least be comparable with the Bay Area but hey, I'm not complaining.

I just chose the word absurd because I pay $28/mo at Hangar 18, and that gets me in to any of their FIVE gyms. There's only two of them that I'm close enough to visit regularly but it's awesome nonetheless to have a constantly fresh problems to work on. Threshhold in Riverside is $35-50/mo depending on options, and Rockreation is $50/mo or so. I suppose I'm spoiled overall but that $75 is a lot to me compared to the alternatives here so I don't know what the draw will be aside from a new facility and the Sharma name.

Yeah, in Minnesota we have 3 Vertical Endeavors locations that I pay $32 a month for (I did get the 1-year membership on sale, but it's an annual sale so I'll always pay that lower rate). $100ish sounds nuts!

I do both climbing and yoga, yoga is definitely the more expensive of the two if you wanna do it outside your own home. There's like one good Ashtanga place in Seoul, it's about $40 a class.

My climbing gym is around $60 a month, but it's just a tiny bouldering place.

I climb at Boulder Brighton, a climbing gym in Sussex which only opened about 3 months ago. The guy who signed me up and showed me around on my very first day there was Jack, a really enthusiastic, friendly and talented climber. He helped me and my friends out a lot with technique and stuff, he was such a great guy.

I just found out that he died at the weekend climbing in Wales. I didn't know him that well but feel really bad for his friends and family, he was only 23. Be careful out there people.

PRG East Falls near Manayunk costs 60 no commitment, or 55 for a year, with the option to go to our other two gyms for 5 bucks more. They're putting in a training section in now too, which should be good. I heard rumors Go Vertical might go under or at least have to relocate, as the landlord would make more money turning that space into parking for the casino and the lease is up soon.

If you're not a boulderer you might be making trips out to the suburbs in the future.

I tried to go Saturday but it was so crowded I just turned around and went home. I've never been rock climbing before and wanted to see what it was about.

Came back on Monday night. It was busy but you had plenty of sections to yourself, especially the easy ones. No clue who Chris Sharma is but I guess he's a big deal, he was there - maybe you have to be into the climbing scene to appreciate that.

The staff told me to try the easy routes by the entrance to the bouldering area. Again, I was alone and had no clue what I was doing. Didn't know that matching colors constituted a route, that the big black holds on the "up and over" boulder were for getting down off it, and a bunch of other stuff. Staff and other climbers are friendly, I asked a bunch of questions.

After a while I got the flow of things, basically by watching someone do a route first then trying to do my version of their moves. It was a good workout and I ended up buying a 10-session pass. I do so many other things that I probably won't be there more than a few times a month. It's something to do when there's no surf or lack motivation to go to the regular gym.

Gym bouldering rooms are usually pretty social, which for me was a big reason for staying with it early on; two hours end up gone in a flash and if you're bored you can just move to a different looking problem.
