Inspired by my own recent auto purchase, I thought that other hot hatch owners should have a place to discuss their own cars. Due to the composition of SA, I'd bet this thread will be US-centric, but if you're a European with one of the super-hot hatches that we don't get here, please feel free to share!

Let's talk cars:

Volkswagen Golf GTI

The original hot hatch! Known by many names throughout the years, including the Rabbit, the Golf, and even just the GTI, the Golf is one of the most popular hatchbacks of all time. The Mk6 Golf GTI develops 200hp and is paired with a 6-speed DSG or manual transmission that drives the front wheels. An even hotter version of the Golf called the Golf R comes standard with 256hp and all-wheel drive. The Golf GTI starts at just $24,200 while the Golf R starts at $34,195.

Subaru Impreza WRX

The pedigree of the Impreza needs no introduction, and although the coupe version is more common, there exists a WRX hatch with 265hp and an all-wheel drivetrain. The WRX STi adds other go-fast parts and has a hopped-up 305hp engine. The WRX starts at $25,795, while the STi trim comes in at $36,295.

Mazda Mazdaspeed 3

Starting at $24,200 (in direct competition with the base Golf GTI), the Mazdaspeed 3 is no newcomer. Debuted in the 2007 model year, the Mazdaspeed 3 has been delighting drivers for years with its mix of huge power combined with paltry price. The most recent model features 263hp driving the front wheels.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo

A newcomer for the 2013 model year, the Veloster Turbo ups the power from 138hp in the naturally-aspirated version to 201hp in the turbocharged variant. The Turbo is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and is available with front-wheel drive only. The Veloster Turbo is one of the more affordable hot hatch options, coming in at just $22,100.

Ford Focus ST

The newest of the hot hatches, the Ford Focus ST was introduced in the US for the 2013 model year. It features a 252hp motor powering the front wheels and hopes to disrupt the hot hatch market by starting at a reasonable $23,700.

This thread is now a place to show off and discuss your hot hatches!

I tried not to be hypercritical of any given car, although you could be of most of them for various reasons.

By contrast, the torque vectoring system that the Focus ST has in place largely reduces the torque steer in that car, while almost matching the MS3 for raw HP numbers.

I owned one for four years and put 100,000 miles on it. I'm not being critical of it, I'm dead serious :)

Does Hot Hatch mean it blurs the background when you try to take a picture?

Are corvettes hot hatches because I could be down for that. Anyway everyone knows the hottest hatch is the Nissan Leaf. (zero to 20 that is.)

There is something charming about not knowing which way you're going to go when you put your foot down. I think they should replace the steering wheel with a roulette wheel.

Maybe on page 3.

I love this thread (since it was my freaking idea)! I've own a bunch of "hot hatches" that nobody else would even want at this point or even consider them in the category. My favorite being the 1988-90 Escort GT.

(not mine but essentiall identical)
Featuring a blistering 110hp driving the front wheels these cars are still a blast to drive. They had a few unique suspension bits that helped them handle those extra 10 horses.

Hopefully we get some Euro Goons with "real" performance Escorts in here shortly.

How long has the GTI been stuck at 200HP now? It's about time to bump it up, VW. They're great cars, but it's about time to catch up with the rest of the world. Even the R model is under-powered for the price.

The GTI loses bench-racing wise but I have never found it to be underpowered. The clutch and stick are not great, but power isn't awful. The next one will have slightly more power (like 220?) and the performance pack version will have 230, I think.

Dear diary, I got another erection today at work. SO embarrassing, but kinda hot. The CO asked me to fix up his dress uniform. I had stayed late at work to move his badges 1/8" to the left and pointed it out this morning. 1SG spanked me while the CO watched, once they caught it. Tomorrow I get to start all over again...
FINALLY, THIS THREAD. Everyone else got their own, even those silly wagon owners.

Bought in February on impulse. I wanted to see how much the dealership would give me for my Honda Fit and they over estimated by about $2k so I pulled the trigger on the ST (its an ST1) that day. Put on MRT exhaust* which doesn't do poo poo in the way of HP numbers but creates excellent sound. Getting tint done sometime soon to Florida legal standards. I had planned on buying a GTI as my second car and had driven one alot (my dad owns one). But after driving this thing...there was no comparison.

The only complaints I have are that the stock radio/bluetooth computer is wonky as hell, there is no dead pedal surface (got allweather mats for that though), and that it is a blast to drive so I get awful mileage figures. I mean going from a Fit to this is like a kick in the dick on mileage.

Edit: ^^^^^ Nice car! Here's mine! An ST3.

I see there are quite a few ST owners on here. Anyone else running any mods?

I personally just picked myself up an SCT Livewire TS with the Unleashed tune on it. Aside from the immediately-noticeable power gains, I'm also seeing much better throttle response in the 1-2k RPM range and better fuel economy from it.

I've also installed a Green air filter, not for any power gains but because I appreciate that I just need to keep it cleaned and oiled every once in a while versus buying disposable paper filters for the life of the vehicle.

LOVE these. We are looking at them from afar at the moment, as I may pick one up for my wife as she's tired of driving the XTerra. How's the backseat legroom, keeping in mind I'm 5'10", she's 5'4", and most of the time the backseat is going to have a growing 6 year old in it. Doesn't seem to be much there...

I don't want to go to the dealer because...well...I might pick it up on an impulse buy.

Plenty, unless either of the people sitting in the front are super tall. I was cross-shopping an FR-S and BRZ and the Focus has actual, usable back seats. My 6'1" father fit easily in the back seat while my 5'5" wife sat in the front.

Seconded. I let a few of my friends drive it pretty often and I'll ride in the back. 5'10" 180 pounds and I have no problems with my 6'1" roommate in the seat in front of me. Good head room too. The only bad things about the back seats is they don't fold flat very easily.

You do know that you can pull the back seat bottoms up 90 degrees towards the front seats, then pull the backrests of the back seats forward to have an almost completely flat surface, right?

(gently caress knows where he got a white one, they don't come in that colour. Still, :siren:rally heritage:siren: )

It's not as fast as some of the proper hot hatches posted above (130bhp, 0-60 in around 8 seconds) but it does have some other things going for it. It was cheap as anything when new (although they haven't depreciated particularly fast), it looks almost identical to the base model for the maximum amount of "gently caress you" to pushy BMW drivers, and best of all it gets around 55mpg (45 for the Americans). Handling isn't the best, but it's still a lot of fun to drive.

7 DAYS / 1 PROGRAM
I had a ride in a Fabia VRS a few years back, it was an impressive piece of kit and I liked the strangeness of a diesel hot hatch. Shame they didn't stick to their guns as it filled an unusual niche.

I used to have this obscurity a few years back, a '98 Daihatsu Cuore TR-XX Avanzato R4 (sometimes known as a Mira if the importers weren't bothered swapping the stickers). You may be familiar with it if you've played the Gran Turismo series.

The picture probably doesn't get across just how tiny it was, even by European standards. It was built to the limits of the Japanese rules for lightweight cars and was imported to the UK in tiny amounts as a bit of a halo car to generate some interest in the Daihatsu brand. Oddly despite great reviews and demand outstripping supply, they didn't bother to import more. Weighs about 1500lb (700kg) and is a little under 58 inches wide, I could adjust the passenger mirror from the drivers seat without taking my other hand off the wheel. Engine is a 64hp turbocharged and intercooled 659cc (!) 4-cyl Twincam and if that isn't enough they gave it fulltime 4WD. Since it weighs nothing, performance is 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. Pretty modest, but in real world terms it was one of the fastest cars I've ever owned provided it was kept on-boost, howling up to the 8500rpm redline. In lower gears it could give you some terrifying lift-off oversteer if you were feeling particularly brave, though the narrow and tall body combined with skinny tyres limited the handling somewhat. Really liked the car but it was surprisingly tiring/harsh to drive unless you were driving it flat-out everywhere, combined with a long commute at the time, I eventually sold it on.

This is my little baby. I'm not sure how 'hot' you'd call it, with only around 140bhp at the moment, but it's small and light and the short wheelbase means it handles pretty well. Had it around a year now and it still brings a smile to my face every time I get in.
The exhaust note is incredible for such a small engine and it pops and crackles when you drive it hard, which I do at every opportunity. :)

Before this, I had a Golf VR6 which was all stripped and track-ready, and that was a hell of a lot of fun but just not very practical as a daily driver. Sounded amazing though.
