Hopeless Masquerade is pretty terrible as a competitive game, but its still a lot of fun to play. It has a lot of issues and was obviously rushed, but hopefully they'll be worked out. The latest patch temporarily(?) disabled the dash cancel on the broom system cards, which were used in some disgusting near unavoidable blockstrings that would repeatedly guard break you, so at least Tasofro is listening.

The picture is a bit wrong/confusing though. First of all it doesn't mention that C and Z are equivalent to (A+B) to (X+Y) which kind of makes the controls simpler than implied. You could think of them as two special buttons. Also, religion doesn't affect equipped skills at all. It only affects your basic X and Y bullets, and for Buddhism also allows you to charge up your B melee attacks for a bit more hitstun or something. It's idiosyncratic for each character, but as a basic rule of thumb for how religion affects your bullets: Shinto = spread/homing, Taoism = speed and power, and Buddhism = short range but dense.

Even in story mode, she doesn't have any skill or spell cards. Some characters don't even have their skill cards change depending on where you place them. Mamizou has all of 1 skill that changes, everything else doesn't matter where you slot it, while for the earlier characters placement is extremely important. It says a lot that the best characters at the moment are the three from the demo +Nitori. Those characters actually feel complete too, instead of gimmicky, awkward or just completely lacking necessary tools. Hisoutensoku fixed a few fundamental issues from Hisouten, so I'm curious if this game will be received well enough to warrant a similar expansion.

Well, in any case it was clearly rushed out the door to meet the Reitaisai deadline. Tasofro's claimed on their blog that they'll continue to support it though, so I think an expansion (or just a lot of patches) is likely.

I like Hopeless Masquerade because it's a scrub game for scrub players like me. So yeah, it's the Super Smash Bros of Touhou.

God dammit, why is Kokoro's theme so good? Just when I thought I was done listening to it, I find this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47DQeFOsjEY Fair warning, its Techno, so... yeah. Its a really good remix though.

I don't suppose I could request the assistance of one of the people hear that are good at reading/translating Japanese? There's a thing that I could really use some help with, as it's a bit too big for my meager skills to handle alone.

^^ Look harder The Nico Popularity Poll finished up. Usual suspects won music, Reimu keeps her iron grip on the top spot, the main playables took top "pairing". What's interesting is Koishi took second. Hartman's Youkai Girl got 4th in the song contest too. HM's final boss made 14th. HM must have been really well received.

Koishi is second? Huh. Also Last Remote is way better than Hartmann's Youkai Girl.

And here I thought I was joking when I said that Renko and Maribel would be hundreds of times more popular if you could vote for both of them at the same time. Also Youmu got the most 1st place votes yet somehow ended up in 11th. EDIT: V And it had better not. BlitzBlast fucked around with this message at 06:06 on Jul 1, 2013 |

I find it more impressive that Kokoro took 14th with only 9.23% of her votes being first place. A ton of people must have voted for her with one of their other votes.

I was actually commenting on that because it flew in the face of my earlier complaints so it was joking chagrin. In all honesty, I find the high-pitched synth tones used mostly at the beginning of the song to be incredibly grating. The rest is okay until they go back to that synth again.

Anyways, yeah the main problem is that synth trumpet or whatever. It sounds fine on the slower Necrofantasy, but on Necrofantasia it's just blaring loud and honestly kind of annoying.

Pleasantly surprised by jump in popularity of Koishi and Hartman, both have been my favorite character and music. Also the Kokoro/Koishi pairing was expected but surprised at how high it ranked for showing up the first time. And yes, Night Falls is vastly superior to Necrofantasia.

Yeah, since Necrofantasia and Necro Fantasy are both similar, I just think that Necrofantasia/Necro Fantasy are Ran's theme and Night Falls is Yukari's. The 3 fairies ranked pretty low, that's kind of surprising. Border of Life beaten by Hartmann's Youkai Girl? Koishi's sudden popularity is pretty obvious, huh?

The version of Necrofantasia on ZUN's albums tries to fix that slightly, but it still doesn't quite hit the mark. Even if you ignore the buildup (which is, in fact, better), FAKE EDIT: okay, no, listening to the song again, the synth horn is just as bad in Necro-Fantasy. It's just not as omnipresent. I'm perfectly willing to call Necro-Fantasy strictly Ran's theme while Night Falls is Yukari's. Night Falls fits her better anyway.

I think the synth horns in Necrofantasia are charming; they hit that sweet spot of slapdash and sublime, like all of ZUN's stuff. I also find the unremixed U.N. Owen hilarious. Night Falls is pretty cool, though. e: Time for douchebag EDM Night Falls
