I've got tickets to see Drive-By Truckers next weekend and I can't loving wait. So I just bought a house and finally have a nice garage to work on my projects. I also just purchased an old 80's record player to put in it as well as a double vinyl of Southern Rock Opera. I can't wait to listen to it in all it's hissy and poppy glory.

The show is tonight and I'll let everyone know how it goes. The Pageant (in STL) has as good acoustics as drat near anywhere so I will be very interested to hear what they sound like live. I love how their set list is wildly unpredictable because they don't use one. I so hope to hear Space City live, but I fear I'll probably be disappointed since they rarely do that one live.

The Truckers show last night was badass. The sound was also great whether they were using 3 guitars or keys. Jay Gonzalez is awesome how he seemlessly goes between keys and guitar, many times in the same song. They opened up with Puttin' People on the Moon and then went right into Women Without Whiskey which caused the crowd to explode. The Pageant was nearly sold out as it was asses and elbows everywhere. Talking to a lot of people around me, it was pretty cool to hear how a lot of people from Iowa and Illinois drove down to the see the show. It should also be noted that Mike Cooley sounded loving awesome last night, both his voice and guitar playing. DBT sounds so loving heavy live. My favorite tunes live were Women Without Whiskey, Hell No I Ain't Happy, Zip City, Lookout Mountain, and a killer version of Buttholeville to end the night. Such a killer show.

Whatever happened to Blanche? I don't see anything suggesting they broke up but also nothing indicates they've done anything since Little Amber Bottles. I liked that they had the kinda gothic sound without going up their own rear end like 16 Horsepower did after Sackcloth 'n Ashes.

It wouldn't have been Emmylou. The Hot Burritos cover photo is from the same shoot as the Gilded Palace of Sin album cover and Gram and Emmylou hadn't even met at that point. I haven't been able to find any times, but as far as I can tell the two girls on the cover were hired by the label to model for the shoot. They weren't anyone connected to anyone in the Flying Burritos Brothers.

Well,it may not be "country," per se, but Southeastern as an album reminds me above all else of Ryan Adam's Heartbreaker. (Plus, Ryan Adams was going to produce Southeastern but had to drop out for some reason.) I may be the only one e,se who hears it, but I don't know, it always comes to mind.

Yeah, after Decoration Day I'd almost peg Pizza Deliverance/Gangstabilly as their second best stuff. It has a great country sound they let be overwhelmed by the Rock stuff after Southern Rock Opera became a break out, yet with a punk attitude. I love it all, but there's something really great about the first two. That said their album covers and names are just terrible. I ignored them for months while I was getting into the rest of their stuff because I assumed they were joke albums or something. This is so far off but I can see how you'd think that once you've seen those two album covers. Yeah they're one of my five or so favorite bands but I don't really like anything pre-SRO (save The Living Bubba). But the run from Southern Rock Opera through The Dirty South is pretty untouchable. Brighter Than Creations Dark is pretty great too, and the other three they've done since then all have their high points even if they're a bit more hit or miss. Mexcillent posted:Real great. Well, there is a big fire that just started nearby and could threaten the camp grounds. If all goes well and the fire is put out, Del McCoury Band on Sunday night! So I added Austin Lucas on facebook. Messaged him a few days later and asked for chords to "Life I've Got", and dude messaged me back 5 minutes later with chords and a complete run down on the song. That's one cool motherfucker. Also he's about to start a US tour to support his new album, which, although not my favorite Austin Lucas thing, is still pretty drat good.

On a trip to Seattle this summer, I discovered an incredible roots/folk/country band called Vaudeville Etiquette. They have male and female singers who switch off songs or harmonize with each other, twangy pedal steel guitar, a trumpet kazoo, lots of songs in minor keys that lend an air of mystery to everything, and a retro-yet-timeless sound that I loved. I wanted to take them all back to Florida with me. Can anyone give me some recommendations for modern folk from the past decade or so? Right now I'm mostly listening to Bright Eyes and Laura Stevenson. I'm also starting to get into folk-punk. I like the early Against Me! records and I have an Andrew Jackson Jihad album I'll probably listen to later this morning.

I'll go weeks without listening to anything except Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. There's 5 Gillian Welch albums, 1 Dave Rawlings album, and their shows are taped pretty often and not hard to find. That should keep you going for a while.
