I don't remember Bob Wayne being mentioned in this thread yet...

And while we are on Hank 3, here's a few that recorded with and/or toured with him.

Ray Lawrence Jr.

I saw Lucky Tubb tour with Hank 3 back in 2009 in Knoxville. I think he's the great cousin of the famous Ernest Tubb.

And one more bit about Hank 3... apparently he will have two albums this year. The country album will be entitled Brothers of the 4x4 and the hellbilly/punk album will be entitled A Fiendish Threat.

I've found that Carolina Chocolate Drops, The Devil Makes Three as well as some of The Felice Brothers' stuff scratch the same itch for me, but I'm also on the lookout for more stuff.

When I went to Old Crow gig some months ago, they brought some local buskers on the stage for a rendition of "This Train" that was wonderfully chaotic. The buskers played outside after the gig as well, with people asking for "Wagon Wheel" and following them around whenever the police made them move on. Weed and whisky in the air, singer's voice shot to hell, visibly frozen fingers - it was great.

Anyway, here are some more bands I've been into last year or so that I don't remember being mentioned in the thread before. Nothing really obscure, but eh.

The Band of Heathens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjrgTcyU3a0 (not entirely dissimilar to The Band)

Timber Timbre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irPIjJl4ByU (creepy swamp country sound)

Dave Alvin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ym4kTfOEG4 (slow burning song that gets under your skin)

Buddy Miller: http://youtu.be/qmSDxOWfIOM?t=2m (he's better known as a producer, but he's got some great songs himself)

The legend that is Charlie Daniels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs4y5si8DGs (without a fiddle this time)

Eileen Jewell was mentioned but without a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YaxnveOUdQ (apart from the aching sound watch out for her wonderful turns of phrase, too)

John Mellencamp's latest is brilliant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rfi4BIvr-w

And the greatest Russian 'folk' band Akvarium at their wildest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcwcayA_PW0

I've only recently gotten into this sound and live far away from it all, so I don't really know which people everybody knows, but tried not to post the ones I presume everybody would know anyway.

Any good blogs for country/americana/bluegrass? I'm partial to http://ninebullets.net/ myself.

I've got tickets to see Drive-By Truckers next weekend and I can't loving wait.

So I just bought a house and finally have a nice garage to work on my projects. I also just purchased an old 80's record player to put in it as well as a double vinyl of Southern Rock Opera. I can't wait to listen to it in all it's hissy and poppy glory.

I'm curious to hear what their live sound is like now that they are down to just two guitars. I've seen them many many times but the last couple of times were somewhat subpar because they added a keyboard player in addition to already having three guitars and their live sound was just an impenetrable wall of noise.

You say that like it's a bad thing :D Seriously, though, I'm also wondering how they're gonna sound, and what direction any new music is going to take. I've not been impressed with the last two studio albums, but Patterson Hood's solo stuff still floats my boat.

They aren't down to two guitars. Jay Gonzales (the completely awesome keyboard player they added) splits his time between guitar and keys now--sometimes playing both on the same song.

Ah, that's good to hear. I thought they were at their best live when Isbell switched up between guitar and keys. Three guitars plus keys is just too much with them.

The show is tonight and I'll let everyone know how it goes. The Pageant (in STL) has as good acoustics as drat near anywhere so I will be very interested to hear what they sound like live. I love how their set list is wildly unpredictable because they don't use one. I so hope to hear Space City live, but I fear I'll probably be disappointed since they rarely do that one live.

The Truckers show last night was badass. The sound was also great whether they were using 3 guitars or keys. Jay Gonzalez is awesome how he seemlessly goes between keys and guitar, many times in the same song. They opened up with Puttin' People on the Moon and then went right into Women Without Whiskey which caused the crowd to explode. The Pageant was nearly sold out as it was asses and elbows everywhere. Talking to a lot of people around me, it was pretty cool to hear how a lot of people from Iowa and Illinois drove down to the see the show. It should also be noted that Mike Cooley sounded loving awesome last night, both his voice and guitar playing.

DBT sounds so loving heavy live. My favorite tunes live were Women Without Whiskey, Hell No I Ain't Happy, Zip City, Lookout Mountain, and a killer version of Buttholeville to end the night. Such a killer show.

It wouldn't have been Emmylou. The Hot Burritos cover photo is from the same shoot as the Gilded Palace of Sin album cover and Gram and Emmylou hadn't even met at that point.

I haven't been able to find any times, but as far as I can tell the two girls on the cover were hired by the label to model for the shoot. They weren't anyone connected to anyone in the Flying Burritos Brothers.

Well,it may not be "country," per se, but Southeastern as an album reminds me above all else of Ryan Adam's Heartbreaker. (Plus, Ryan Adams was going to produce Southeastern but had to drop out for some reason.) I may be the only one e,se who hears it, but I don't know, it always comes to mind.

It drives me crazy that PD and Gangstabilly get so consistently underrated. Sure, we probably could have lived without "The President's Penis is Missing" and I've never been totally crazy about "Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus)" but the rest of the album is stellar and there isn't a single bad track on Gangstabilly; not one. That whole record is dynamite from start to finish. (Yes, I'm one of the eight people alive who really enjoys "Late For Church.")

"Box of Spiders" is my #1 DBT song of all time. Reminds me of my Grandma. "Too mean to die." And then she did.

Yeah, after Decoration Day I'd almost peg Pizza Deliverance/Gangstabilly as their second best stuff. It has a great country sound they let be overwhelmed by the Rock stuff after Southern Rock Opera became a break out, yet with a punk attitude. I love it all, but there's something really great about the first two.

That said their album covers and names are just terrible. I ignored them for months while I was getting into the rest of their stuff because I assumed they were joke albums or something. The seriousness of the content doesn't match the names at all.

This is so far off but I can see how you'd think that once you've seen those two album covers. I'm of a mind that the Truckers came into their own on Southern Rock Opera and that those first two records where mainly gimmick-country music. Mainly.

Yeah they're one of my five or so favorite bands but I don't really like anything pre-SRO (save The Living Bubba). But the run from Southern Rock Opera through The Dirty South is pretty untouchable. Brighter Than Creations Dark is pretty great too, and the other three they've done since then all have their high points even if they're a bit more hit or miss.

On a trip to Seattle this summer, I discovered an incredible roots/folk/country band called Vaudeville Etiquette. They have male and female singers who switch off songs or harmonize with each other, twangy pedal steel guitar, a trumpet kazoo, lots of songs in minor keys that lend an air of mystery to everything, and a retro-yet-timeless sound that I loved. I wanted to take them all back to Florida with me.

They have an EP that I highly recommend, especially tracks 1 ("Blood & Bone") and 5 ("Six Feet Deep").

I'll go weeks without listening to anything except Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. There's 5 Gillian Welch albums, 1 Dave Rawlings album, and their shows are taped pretty often and not hard to find. That should keep you going for a while.
