I don't enjoy Woody Paige, but at the very least he's good for the Behind The Horn clips they post on their official YouTube channel, where he generally comes off as crotchety and out of touch in the funniest way possible.

In sharp contrast, Plaschke has never contributed anything positive to any media venture in which he's participated. He just takes up ample space and ruins things.

And, like Peter King, wins "Sportswriter of the Year" awards over and over and over. Chosen by his peers. Which explains why sports writing is so loving awful in general.

As someone who used to watch Around the Horn every day and now catches it every now and then, Plaschke seems to have mellowed out. He used to have extremely offensive semi-racist sports opinions and came off the worst on a panel that included Jay Mariotti, but every time I've seen him in recent years his opinions don't seem that bad.

I've never read anything he's written so I don't anything about that side of the coin though.

The only thing I like about Around the Horn is that ESPN basically spends 23 1/2 hours trying to make sure every sport is covered by either ex-athletes, hip sideline reporters, or slick news anchor types and then for a half hour a day they have this weird show centered around grizzled old sports writers who look like they skipped makeup.

Anymore, you get the most interesting and entertaining sports analysis from people who don't identify as sports reporters. Know it's probably not going to happen, but I want to see more folks like Jones come in from the outside because they're not burdened with thirty years worth of dumbass cliches about athlete motivation or game management. Also, the non-reporters don't have to sacrifice objectivity to keep whatever inside sources they've accumulated as friends; they can just say whatever the hell they need to say.

Like half their programing now is devoted to sports writers yelling at each other though? PTI was really good when it started (and still might be, I haven't been able to watch it in forever) but it has completely ruined the network.

PTI is still OK in my book, though it's not what it used to be. ESPN just drew the wrong lesson from the drat thing - Kornheiser and Wilbon are friends who happen to disagree vehemently about things sometimes but were sometimes on the same page. They had good chemistry together, which was vital, and like people upthread were saying, it resembled their Post newsroom arguments.

ESPN just took the message of "put guys who are entertaining and often at loggerheads on TV and let them debate" and turned it into "Have broken caricatures of actual reporters scream at each other and always always always vehemently disagree. Now do it 23 hrs a day."

The Onion Sportsdome really nailed how dumb ESPN is. My favorite was in the PTI and Around the Horn-like show they did where each guy talked about which athlete they would kill and how.

If Fox Sports 1 brought back Sportsdome after it launches, it would be the best ESPN trolling ever.

Maybe I didn't phrase that right, but I think there's a level of polish to the rest of their product that doesn't exist in Around the Horn.

Yeah, it's too easy right now to make a Brady Anderson comparison. I'm not surprised Heyman wrote this given he high fived everyone when nobody got in the hall this year.

Hey guys the single season home run record holder is Carlos Zambrano because I choose to not recognize any other seasons by any other batters except when Carlos Zambrano was cracking dingers. Zambrano with 6!

What a loving hack.

As an aside, in looking into the number, I found out that Zambrano hit two home runs off of Kyle Lohse. Come on, Kyle Lohse, get your poo poo together.
