Hey all, Lupa here.

I just wanted to clarify what's going on here. I don't have anything against you personally, Infamous Sphere. While it's true that my comments were sparked by what I read, it wasn't meant to mean I'm upset at you personally or that I took it as an attack.

The "derp dee doo" thing irks me because it was a phrase I said in maybe...three videos? As a joke at the time. And now that seems to be my catchphrase and that's what a lot of folks say bothers them about my videos. And I can't do anything more than not use it and, well...it's been two years since that happened. It's the same as when people complain that Phelan and I cameo in each other's videos too much. He's been in like 4 episodes out of 110. It just gets frustrating because that's not representative of what I do or even what I did.

But if you just mean you don't like the style of my videos, that's fine. I'm not everyone's cup of tea. I'm sorry if I misinterpreted.

Ah, Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Sorry if I was a little uninformed, and I know how that can be annoying - say, if someone watches a really old video of mine and tells me I need to improve something that I've already worked on, or change something that I've already changed. I know most of my comments in this thread have been more critical ones, so I need to start mentioning the positive ones as well, and there have been episodes of yours that I did very much enjoy (I don't mean to make this a backhanded compliment in any way, I find your episodes very fun a lot of the time, they just don't always necessarily align to my taste).

Like you and Rantasmo, I did a review of Ben and Arthur, and it's interesting to see how we both interpreted the same movie. I didn't even pick up on the fact that Tammy was kind of an offensive female character, since I was just too focussed on how bad the rest of the movie was - so that was a really good call. I was a bit hesitant to release a review of Ben and Arthur after you'd done yours, but Diamanda Hagan told me to go for it and I'm glad I did. As an LGBT reviewer, missing out on that movie would be a pretty grave omission. I think it deserves to be known at least as much as The Room, since it really is the worst movie I've ever seen in my life.

Also, the Cine-Masochist and I are really happy about you working with Cecil from Good Bad Flicks :)

Infamous Sphere- I forgot if you said you wanted to review only historical LGBTQ films, or all time periods? I haven't browsed all of your reviews, but a few that have popped into my head are Heavenly Creatures by Peter Jackson, I Can't Think Straight, a sort of Bollywood film.

I review LGBTQ movies, AND period dramas. Sometimes there's an overlap, but I review stuff with a modern setting as well. I haven't yet gotten around Heavenly Creatures, since I've been a little apprehensive about lesbian murderers and all - and I haven't really looked into I Can't Think Straight. I watched an Indian movie with a lesbian character in it, Turning 30!!!, but that was one of the most dull movies I've ever seen in my life. I've got a few movies cooking around that I'd like to look at, and that I'm going to be reviewing - and I am making a bit of a concerted effort to have more female LGBT stuff there, but there's a few male LGBT flicks I'm going to be looking at too. There's one where Kyle MacLachlan plays the spirit of Cary Grant, and I'm watching Twin Peaks right now and enjoying the presence of the MacLachlan far too much, so I should probably give that one a watch. I also watched the Liberace movie, but I won't be touching that one since I don't have much to say about it that couldn't be summed up in a sentence (wow, Liberace, you narcissistic, hypocritical man.) It all just depends on time pressures, what scripts I have shelved, what time I have to film etc.

Here's my take on Ben and Arthur. It's an older review so it's probably a little rough around the edges. I've done a couple of more recent reviews of terrible schlocky films about terrible gay people if you're interested - The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer (a no-budget film made about...Jeffrey Dahmer) and most recently, Windows, which is about an evil lesbian stalker. Both of them are not much better than Ben and Arthur, but I'll give The Secret Life points for heart. The main actor/director/man responsible for that film, Carl Crew, got very excited when he realised that fellow reviewer The Cine-Masochist and I were talking about his film on Twitter, and I felt a bit bad that I canned his film so much. If there's one thing I've learned, it's a lot easier to be negative when you don't think it'll get back to the person responsible.

It really was...well, definitely not the worst thing I've ever seen, but it didn't really make me feel satisfied for having watched it. With the risk of Steven Soderbergh showing up in this thread (since I'm about to say bad things about him), I get the impression that Steven Soderbergh is..uh...his films seem to be grinding, and pointless. And this is a judgement made mostly on hearsay, since I haven't really watched many of his films, so it's probably not a very good judgement, but in terms of what I've heard about The Girlfriend Experience and Magic Mike, both of them sounded awful, boring and devoid of a purpose. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but the Liberace film didn't seem to have much to say, when it came down to it. Could it have been better? I don't know. I don't know enough about Liberace to be able to say so.

Speaking of Magic Mike, I know it's a bit of a derail, but I seem to have noticed a tendency..when films focus on male sex workers catering to men, they are often quite decent. When films focus on male sex workers catering to women, they're shallow, and awful. I discussed this on my show page, and about the only exception we could think of was Boogie Nights, which is great, and has Dirk Diggler performing scenes with women (but I suppose porn actors are a whole different category of sex worker to prostitutes and strippers.)

As someone who actually watched Magic Mike, it's pretty much the opposite of shallow and awful. And I don't believe it's meant to cater to any specific gender.

Also way underplayed how much of the movie would be somewhat depressing cautionary drama.
You know that scene in the trailers that shows the two stripper-cops? That very same scene one of the strippers feeds a girl some illegal narcotics and is almost killed by a group of angry men. Woo! Girls night out! Fun, fun, fun! :toot:

In regards to Magic Mike - ok, I really should actually watch the film, and decide for myself - I was just a little put off by the whole...idea that there was random fanservice lesbianism/threesome stuff thrown in. Two queer friends of mine (one male, one female) saw it, and said it was "Ok - and very straight." I won't necessarily like it because it's got dark elements in it - after all, I hated Black Swan, but I probably should give it at least a try.

By "catering to women", I didn't mean that the film catered to women, I meant that the sex workers in the film catered to women. Sorry, that was probably phrased in an unclear fashion. So, My Own Private Idaho, Mysterious Skin - sex workers catering to men. Spread, Deuce Bigalow - sex workers catering to women. But I agree that it's a pretty blanket, silly statement to make - I suppose in my broad sweeping generalisation, films portraying hustlers who sleep with men tend to be more likely to be art films, or more serious pictures, whereas since "getting paid to sleep with sexy women" is seen as desirable, films about hustlers who sleep with women/strippers who strip off for women are a lot more likely to be shallow and bad.

Ronk a Donk posted:

Midnight Cowboy is an excellent film! I did a double review of Midnight Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho. Joe Buck was mainly aiming for rich women, but when I was in the editing suite, I realised that he says "All the women are rich and begging for it, and all the men are tutti-fruities" - which I suppose could be taken two ways. Either the women in NY are desperate for sex cause no one will sleep with them, or he can sleep with just about anyone in NY cause the men like men as well. All of his male tricks end in disaster though.
What I find funny about Midnight Cowboy - is that it had an x rating, and now, in Australia, it's rated M = probably our rating equivalent of PG 13.

Anyway, I'll try not to derail any longer.

Danny also loving destroyed the three games he's played so far. (Punch-Out, SMB2, and Karate Kid, the last of which was described to be notoriously frustrating and difficult by the AVGN and Danny beat it in like 12 minutes). Arin has been playing Mega Man 2 exclusively so that's why they're floundering there. In all fairness he did mention that they started off by playing the three games he's best at, but Jon was never even close to as good at any game we ever saw him play.

And from a humor perspective I don't see how anyone wouldn't be on board with Danny after the whole Luigi "It's a fine day for mayoring!" discussion they had in one of those SMB2 episodes. That's probably the hardest I've laughed at Game Grumps since floating Knuckles.

And this is coming from someone who started watching Game Grumps because of Jon and not Arin. I wasn't even sure who Arin was, I had seen some of his flashes on Newgrounds (which I only figured out after Game Grumps was announced) but never really keep track of the artists on those.

Speaking of which, I think SF debris's Last Airbender series review is on a whole different level than Doug's episode by episode look and I think it's better overall (and one of my favorite opinionated looks he has done). Just about every episode Doug spends about one or two minutes talking about "how does it tie into the story?" or whatever and glosses over character moments and other fun or important things. He's speculation bits are great fun, but him worrying over if the episode is filler or not is just unnecessary. Plus, as it has been pointed out here and in the Avatar thread, some pretty obvious character moments and actions fly over his head, but he does pick up on the subtler things. It was just weird to me, especially from a fan of Tom and Jerry unable to spot a visual gag.
